New Living Translation

English Standard Version

  • A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem. A psalm of David.

    What if the LORD had not been on our side?
    Let all Israel repeat:
  • Our Help Is in the Name of the Lord

    A Song of Ascents. Of David.

    If it had not been the Lord who was on our side —
    let Israel now say —
  • What if the LORD had not been on our side
    when people attacked us?
  • if it had not been the Lord who was on our side
    when people rose up against us,
  • They would have swallowed us alive
    in their burning anger.
  • then they would have swallowed us up alive,
    when their anger was kindled against us;
  • The waters would have engulfed us;
    a torrent would have overwhelmed us.
  • then the flood would have swept us away,
    the torrent would have gone over us;
  • Yes, the raging waters of their fury
    would have overwhelmed our very lives.
  • then over us would have gone
    the raging waters.
  • Praise the LORD,
    who did not let their teeth tear us apart!
  • Blessed be the Lord,
    who has not given us
    as prey to their teeth!
  • We escaped like a bird from a hunter’s trap.
    The trap is broken, and we are free!
  • We have escaped like a bird
    from the snare of the fowlers;
    the snare is broken,
    and we have escaped!
  • Our help is from the LORD,
    who made heaven and earth.
  • Our help is in the name of the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.
