New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • aA psalm of David.

    Don’t worry about the wicked
    or envy those who do wrong.
  • The Heritage of the Righteous and the Calamity of the Wicked

    A Psalm of David.

    Do not fret because of evildoers,
    Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.
  • For like grass, they soon fade away.
    Like spring flowers, they soon wither.
  • For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,
    And wither as the green herb.
  • Trust in the LORD and do good.
    Then you will live safely in the land and prosper.
  • Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
  • Take delight in the LORD,
    and he will give you your heart’s desires.
  • Delight yourself also in the Lord,
    And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
  • Commit everything you do to the LORD.
    Trust him, and he will help you.
  • Commit[a] your way to the Lord,
    Trust also in Him,
    And He shall bring it to pass.
  • He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn,
    and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun.
  • He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    And your justice as the noonday.
  • Be still in the presence of the LORD,
    and wait patiently for him to act.
    Don’t worry about evil people who prosper
    or fret about their wicked schemes.
  • Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
    Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
    Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
  • Stop being angry!
    Turn from your rage!
    Do not lose your temper —
    it only leads to harm.
  • Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
    Do not fret — it only causes harm.
  • For the wicked will be destroyed,
    but those who trust in the LORD will possess the land.
  • For evildoers shall be [b]cut off;
    But those who wait on the Lord,
    They shall inherit the earth.
  • Soon the wicked will disappear.
    Though you look for them, they will be gone.
  • For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more;
    Indeed, you will look carefully for his place,
    But it shall be no more.
  • The lowly will possess the land
    and will live in peace and prosperity.
  • But the meek shall inherit the earth,
    And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
  • The wicked plot against the godly;
    they snarl at them in defiance.
  • The wicked plots against the just,
    And gnashes at him with his teeth.
  • But the Lord just laughs,
    for he sees their day of judgment coming.
  • The Lord laughs at him,
    For He sees that his day is coming.
  • The wicked draw their swords
    and string their bows
    to kill the poor and the oppressed,
    to slaughter those who do right.
  • The wicked have drawn the sword
    And have bent their bow,
    To cast down the poor and needy,
    To slay those who are of upright conduct.
  • But their swords will stab their own hearts,
    and their bows will be broken.
  • Their sword shall enter their own heart,
    And their bows shall be broken.
  • It is better to be godly and have little
    than to be evil and rich.
  • A little that a righteous man has
    Is better than the riches of many wicked.
  • For the strength of the wicked will be shattered,
    but the LORD takes care of the godly.
  • For the arms of the wicked shall be broken,
    But the Lord upholds the righteous.
  • Day by day the LORD takes care of the innocent,
    and they will receive an inheritance that lasts forever.
  • The Lord knows the days of the upright,
    And their inheritance shall be forever.
  • They will not be disgraced in hard times;
    even in famine they will have more than enough.
  • They shall not be ashamed in the evil time,
    And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
  • But the wicked will die.
    The LORD’s enemies are like flowers in a field —
    they will disappear like smoke.
  • But the wicked shall perish;
    And the enemies of the Lord,
    Like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish.
    Into smoke they shall vanish away.
  • The wicked borrow and never repay,
    but the godly are generous givers.
  • The wicked borrows and does not repay,
    But the righteous shows mercy and gives.
  • Those the LORD blesses will possess the land,
    but those he curses will die.
  • For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth,
    But those cursed by Him shall be [c]cut off.
  • The LORD directs the steps of the godly.
    He delights in every detail of their lives.
  • The steps of a good man are [d]ordered by the Lord,
    And He delights in his way.
  • Though they stumble, they will never fall,
    for the LORD holds them by the hand.
  • Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
    For the Lord upholds him with His hand.
  • Once I was young, and now I am old.
    Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned
    or their children begging for bread.
  • I have been young, and now am old;
    Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,
    Nor his descendants begging bread.
  • The godly always give generous loans to others,
    and their children are a blessing.
  • He is [e]ever merciful, and lends;
    And his descendants are blessed.
  • Turn from evil and do good,
    and you will live in the land forever.
  • Depart from evil, and do good;
    And dwell forevermore.
  • For the LORD loves justice,
    and he will never abandon the godly.
    He will keep them safe forever,
    but the children of the wicked will die.
  • For the Lord loves justice,
    And does not forsake His saints;
    They are preserved forever,
    But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off.
  • The godly will possess the land
    and will live there forever.
  • The righteous shall inherit the land,
    And dwell in it forever.
  • The godly offer good counsel;
    they teach right from wrong.
  • The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom,
    And his tongue talks of justice.
  • They have made God’s law their own,
    so they will never slip from his path.
  • The law of his God is in his heart;
    None of his steps shall [f]slide.
  • The wicked wait in ambush for the godly,
    looking for an excuse to kill them.
  • The wicked watches the righteous,
    And seeks to slay him.
  • But the LORD will not let the wicked succeed
    or let the godly be condemned when they are put on trial.
  • The Lord will not leave him in his hand,
    Nor condemn him when he is judged.
  • Put your hope in the LORD.
    Travel steadily along his path.
    He will honor you by giving you the land.
    You will see the wicked destroyed.
  • Wait on the Lord,
    And keep His way,
    And He shall exalt you to inherit the land;
    When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.
  • I have seen wicked and ruthless people
    flourishing like a tree in its native soil.
  • I have seen the wicked in great power,
    And spreading himself like a native green tree.
  • But when I looked again, they were gone!
    Though I searched for them, I could not find them!
  • Yet [g]he passed away, and behold, he was no more;
    Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found.
  • Look at those who are honest and good,
    for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace.
  • Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright;
    For the future of that man is peace.
  • But the rebellious will be destroyed;
    they have no future.
  • But the transgressors shall be destroyed together;
    The future of the wicked shall be cut off.
  • The LORD rescues the godly;
    he is their fortress in times of trouble.
  • But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    He is their strength in the time of trouble.
  • The LORD helps them,
    rescuing them from the wicked.
    He saves them,
    and they find shelter in him.
  • And the Lord shall help them and deliver them;
    He shall deliver them from the wicked,
    And save them,
    Because they trust in Him.
