New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • For the choir director: A psalm of David.

I waited patiently for the LORD to help me,
and he turned to me and heard my cry.
  • I Waited Patiently for the Lord

{To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.} I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
  • He lifted me out of the pit of despair,
out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground
and steadied me as I walked along.
  • He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
  • He has given me a new song to sing,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see what he has done and be amazed.
They will put their trust in the LORD.
  • And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
  • Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD,
who have no confidence in the proud
or in those who worship idols.
  • Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
  • O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us.
Your plans for us are too numerous to list.
    You have no equal.
If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds,
I would never come to the end of them.
  • Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
  • You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings.
Now that you have made me listen, I finally understanda
you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings.
  • Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
  • Then I said, “Look, I have come.
As is written about me in the Scriptures:
  • Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
  • I take joy in doing your will, my God,
for your instructions are written on my heart.”
  • I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
  • I have told all your people about your justice.
I have not been afraid to speak out,
as you, O LORD, well know.
  • I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.
  • I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart;
I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power.
I have told everyone in the great assembly
of your unfailing love and faithfulness.
  • I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.
  • LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me.
Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.
  • Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.
  • For troubles surround me —
    too many to count!
My sins pile up so high
I can’t see my way out.
They outnumber the hairs on my head.
    I have lost all courage.
  • For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.
  • Please, LORD, rescue me!
Come quickly, LORD, and help me.
  • Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me.
  • May those who try to destroy me
be humiliated and put to shame.
May those who take delight in my trouble
    be turned back in disgrace.
  • Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.
  • Let them be horrified by their shame,
for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!”
  • Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.
  • But may all who search for you
be filled with joy and gladness in you.
May those who love your salvation
repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!”
  • Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified.
  • As for me, since I am poor and needy,
let the Lord keep me in his thoughts.
You are my helper and my savior.
O my God, do not delay.
  • But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.
