New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • Book Two
    (Psalms 42–72)

For the choir director: A psalma of the descendants of Korah.

As the deer longs for streams of water,
so I long for you, O God.
  • As the Deer Pants for the Water

{To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah.} As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
  • I thirst for God, the living God.
When can I go and stand before him?
  • My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?
  • Day and night I have only tears for food,
while my enemies continually taunt me, saying,
“Where is this God of yours?”
  • My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
  • My heart is breaking
as I remember how it used to be:
I walked among the crowds of worshipers,
leading a great procession to the house of God,
singing for joy and giving thanks
amid the sound of a great celebration!
  • When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.
  • Why am I discouraged?
Why is my heart so sad?
I will put my hope in God!
I will praise him again —
    my Savior and
  • Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
  • my God!
    Now I am deeply discouraged,
but I will remember you —
even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan,
from the land of Mount Mizar.
  • O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.
  • I hear the tumult of the raging seas
as your waves and surging tides sweep over me.
  • Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
  • But each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me,
and through each night I sing his songs,
praying to God who gives me life.
  • Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.
  • “O God my rock,” I cry,
    “why have you forgotten me?
Why must I wander around in grief,
    oppressed by my enemies?”
  • I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
  • Their taunts break my bones.
They scoff, “Where is this God of yours?”
  • As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?
  • Why am I discouraged?
Why is my heart so sad?
I will put my hope in God!
I will praise him again —
    my Savior and my God!
  • Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
