New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • For the choir director: A psalma of David, regarding the time Saul sent soldiers to watch David’s house in order to kill him. To be sung to the tune “Do Not Destroy!”

Rescue me from my enemies, O God.
Protect me from those who have come to destroy me.
  • Deliver Me From My Enemies, My God

{To the chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him.} Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.
  • Rescue me from these criminals;
    save me from these murderers.
  • Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.
  • They have set an ambush for me.
Fierce enemies are out there waiting, LORD,
though I have not sinned or offended them.
  • For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD.
  • I have done nothing wrong,
yet they prepare to attack me.
Wake up! See what is happening and help me!
  • They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.
  • O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,
wake up and punish those hostile nations.
Show no mercy to wicked traitors.
    Interlude
  • Thou therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.
  • They come out at night,
    snarling like vicious dogs
    as they prowl the streets.
  • They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.
  • Listen to the filth that comes from their mouths;
    their words cut like swords.
“After all, who can hear us?” they sneer.
  • Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear?
  • But LORD, you laugh at them.
You scoff at all the hostile nations.
  • But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision.
  • You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me,
for you, O God, are my fortress.
  • Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence.
  • In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me.
He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies.
  • The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies.
  • Don’t kill them, for my people soon forget such lessons;
stagger them with your power, and bring them to their knees,
    O Lord our shield.
  • Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield.
  • Because of the sinful things they say,
because of the evil that is on their lips,
let them be captured by their pride,
    their curses, and their lies.
  • For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak.
  • Destroy them in your anger!
    Wipe them out completely!
Then the whole world will know
    that God reigns in Israel.b
    Interlude
  • Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah.
  • My enemies come out at night,
    snarling like vicious dogs
    as they prowl the streets.
  • And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.
  • They scavenge for food
    but go to sleep unsatisfied.c
  • Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied.
  • But as for me, I will sing about your power.
Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love.
For you have been my refuge,
a place of safety when I am in distress.
  • But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.
  • O my Strength, to you I sing praises,
for you, O God, are my refuge,
the God who shows me unfailing love.
  • Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.
