New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • For the choir director: A psalma of David, regarding the time Saul sent soldiers to watch David’s house in order to kill him. To be sung to the tune “Do Not Destroy!”

    Rescue me from my enemies, O God.
    Protect me from those who have come to destroy me.
  • The Assured Judgment of the Wicked

    To the Chief Musician. Set to [a]“Do Not Destroy.” A Michtam of David when Saul sent men, and they watched the house in order to kill him.

    Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
    [b]Defend me from those who rise up against me.
  • Rescue me from these criminals;
    save me from these murderers.
  • Deliver me from the workers of iniquity,
    And save me from bloodthirsty men.
  • They have set an ambush for me.
    Fierce enemies are out there waiting, LORD,
    though I have not sinned or offended them.
  • For look, they lie in wait for my life;
    The mighty gather against me,
    Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O Lord.
  • I have done nothing wrong,
    yet they prepare to attack me.
    Wake up! See what is happening and help me!
  • They run and prepare themselves through no fault of mine.
    Awake to help me, and behold!
  • O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,
    wake up and punish those hostile nations.
    Show no mercy to wicked traitors.
    Interlude
  • You therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel,
    Awake to punish all the [c]nations;
    Do not be merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah
  • They come out at night,
    snarling like vicious dogs
    as they prowl the streets.
  • At evening they return,
    They growl like a dog,
    And go all around the city.
  • Listen to the filth that comes from their mouths;
    their words cut like swords.
    “After all, who can hear us?” they sneer.
  • Indeed, they belch with their mouth;
    Swords are in their lips;
    For they say, “Who hears?”
  • But LORD, you laugh at them.
    You scoff at all the hostile nations.
  • But You, O Lord, shall laugh at them;
    You shall have all the [d]nations in derision.
  • You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me,
    for you, O God, are my fortress.
  • I will wait for You, O You [e]his Strength;
    For God is my [f]defense.
  • In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me.
    He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies.
  • [g]My God of mercy shall come to meet me;
    God shall let me see my desire on my enemies.
  • Don’t kill them, for my people soon forget such lessons;
    stagger them with your power, and bring them to their knees,
    O Lord our shield.
  • Do not slay them, lest my people forget;
    Scatter them by Your power,
    And bring them down,
    O Lord our shield.
  • Because of the sinful things they say,
    because of the evil that is on their lips,
    let them be captured by their pride,
    their curses, and their lies.
  • For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips,
    Let them even be taken in their pride,
    And for the cursing and lying which they speak.
  • Destroy them in your anger!
    Wipe them out completely!
    Then the whole world will know
    that God reigns in Israel.b
    Interlude
  • Consume them in wrath, consume them,
    That they may not be;
    And let them know that God rules in Jacob
    To the ends of the earth. Selah
  • My enemies come out at night,
    snarling like vicious dogs
    as they prowl the streets.
  • And at evening they return,
    They growl like a dog,
    And go all around the city.
  • They scavenge for food
    but go to sleep unsatisfied.c
  • They wander up and down for food,
    And [h]howl if they are not satisfied.
  • But as for me, I will sing about your power.
    Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love.
    For you have been my refuge,
    a place of safety when I am in distress.
  • But I will sing of Your power;
    Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning;
    For You have been my defense
    And refuge in the day of my trouble.
  • O my Strength, to you I sing praises,
    for you, O God, are my refuge,
    the God who shows me unfailing love.
  • To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises;
    For God is my defense,
    My God of mercy.
