New Living Translation

English Standard Version

  • For the choir director: A psalma of David useful for teaching, regarding the time David fought Aram-naharaim and Aram-zobah, and Joab returned and killed 12,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. To be sung to the tune “Lily of the Testimony.”

    You have rejected us, O God, and broken our defenses.
    You have been angry with us; now restore us to your favor.
  • He Will Tread Down Our Foes

    To the choirmaster: according to Shushan Eduth. A Miktama of David; for instruction; when he strove with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and when Joab on his return struck down twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

    O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses;
    you have been angry; oh, restore us.
  • You have shaken our land and split it open.
    Seal the cracks, for the land trembles.
  • You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open;
    repair its breaches, for it totters.
  • You have been very hard on us,
    making us drink wine that sent us reeling.
  • You have made your people see hard things;
    you have given us wine to drink that made us stagger.
  • But you have raised a banner for those who fear you —
    a rallying point in the face of attack.
    Interlude
  • You have set up a banner for those who fear you,
    that they may flee to it from the bow.b Selah
  • Now rescue your beloved people.
    Answer and save us by your power.
  • That your beloved ones may be delivered,
    give salvation by your right hand and answer us!
  • God has promised this by his holinessb:
    “I will divide up Shechem with joy.
    I will measure out the valley of Succoth.
  • God has spoken in his holiness:c
    “With exultation I will divide up Shechem
    and portion out the Vale of Succoth.
  • Gilead is mine,
    and Manasseh, too.
    Ephraim, my helmet, will produce my warriors,
    and Judah, my scepter, will produce my kings.
  • Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim is my helmet;
    Judah is my scepter.
  • But Moab, my washbasin, will become my servant,
    and I will wipe my feet on Edom
    and shout in triumph over Philistia.”
  • Moab is my washbasin;
    upon Edom I cast my shoe;
    over Philistia I shout in triumph.”d
  • Who will bring me into the fortified city?
    Who will bring me victory over Edom?
  • Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
  • Have you rejected us, O God?
    Will you no longer march with our armies?
  • Have you not rejected us, O God?
    You do not go forth, O God, with our armies.
  • Oh, please help us against our enemies,
    for all human help is useless.
  • Oh, grant us help against the foe,
    for vain is the salvation of man!
  • With God’s help we will do mighty things,
    for he will trample down our foes.
  • With God we shall do valiantly;
    it is he who will tread down our foes.
