New Living Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • For the choir director: A psalm of David.

    O God, listen to my complaint.
    Protect my life from my enemies’ threats.
  • Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint;
    Preserve my life from dread of the enemy.
  • Hide me from the plots of this evil mob,
    from this gang of wrongdoers.
  • Hide me from the secret counsel of evildoers,
    From the tumult of those who do iniquity,
  • They sharpen their tongues like swords
    and aim their bitter words like arrows.
  • Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword.
    They aimed bitter speech as their arrow,
  • They shoot from ambush at the innocent,
    attacking suddenly and fearlessly.
  • To shoot from concealment at the blameless;
    Suddenly they shoot at him, and do not fear.
  • They encourage each other to do evil
    and plan how to set their traps in secret.
    “Who will ever notice?” they ask.
  • They hold fast to themselves an evil purpose;
    They talk of laying snares secretly;
    They say, “Who can see them?”
  • As they plot their crimes, they say,
    “We have devised the perfect plan!”
    Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning.
  • They devise injustices, saying,
    “We are ready with a well-conceived plot”;
    For the inward thought and the heart of a man are deep.
  • But God himself will shoot them with his arrows,
    suddenly striking them down.
  • But God will shoot at them with an arrow;
    Suddenly they will be wounded.
  • Their own tongues will ruin them,
    and all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.
  • So they will make him stumble;
    Their own tongue is against them;
    All who see them will shake the head.
  • Then everyone will be afraid;
    they will proclaim the mighty acts of God
    and realize all the amazing things he does.
  • Then all men will fear,
    And they will declare the work of God,
    And will consider what He has done.
  • The godly will rejoice in the LORD
    and find shelter in him.
    And those who do what is right
    will praise him.
  • The righteous man will be glad in the LORD and will take refuge in Him;
    And all the upright in heart will glory.
