New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • For the choir director: A psalm of Asaph. A song to be sung to the tune “Do Not Destroy!”

    We thank you, O God!
    We give thanks because you are near.
    People everywhere tell of your wonderful deeds.
  • We Give Thanks, for Your Name is Near

    {To the chief Musician, Altaschith, A Psalm or Song of Asaph.} Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare.
  • God says, “At the time I have planned,
    I will bring justice against the wicked.
  • When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly.
  • When the earth quakes and its people live in turmoil,
    I am the one who keeps its foundations firm.
    Interlude
  • The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah.
  • “I warned the proud, ‘Stop your boasting!’
    I told the wicked, ‘Don’t raise your fists!
  • I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:
  • Don’t raise your fists in defiance at the heavens
    or speak with such arrogance.’”
  • Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.
  • For no one on earth — from east or west,
    or even from the wilderness —
    should raise a defiant fist.a
  • For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.
  • It is God alone who judges;
    he decides who will rise and who will fall.
  • But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.
  • For the LORD holds a cup in his hand
    that is full of foaming wine mixed with spices.
    He pours out the wine in judgment,
    and all the wicked must drink it,
    draining it to the dregs.
  • For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.
  • But as for me, I will always proclaim what God has done;
    I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
  • But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
  • For God says, “I will break the strength of the wicked,
    but I will increase the power of the godly.”
  • All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off; but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.
