New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • For the choir director: A psalm of Asaph, to be accompanied by a stringed instrument.a

    Sing praises to God, our strength.
    Sing to the God of Jacob.
  • Sing Aloud to God, Our Strength!

    {To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of Asaph.} Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.
  • Sing! Beat the tambourine.
    Play the sweet lyre and the harp.
  • Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery.
  • Blow the ram’s horn at new moon,
    and again at full moon to call a festival!
  • Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.
  • For this is required by the decrees of Israel;
    it is a regulation of the God of Jacob.
  • For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.
  • He made it a law for Israelb
    when he attacked Egypt to set us free.
    I heard an unknown voice say,
  • This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not.
  • “Now I will take the load from your shoulders;
    I will free your hands from their heavy tasks.
  • I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots.
  • You cried to me in trouble, and I saved you;
    I answered out of the thundercloud
    and tested your faith when there was no water at Meribah.
    Interlude
  • Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.
  • “Listen to me, O my people, while I give you stern warnings.
    O Israel, if you would only listen to me!
  • Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me;
  • You must never have a foreign god;
    you must not bow down before a false god.
  • There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.
  • For it was I, the LORD your God,
    who rescued you from the land of Egypt.
    Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things.
  • I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.
  • “But no, my people wouldn’t listen.
    Israel did not want me around.
  • But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.
  • So I let them follow their own stubborn desires,
    living according to their own ideas.
  • So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.
  • Oh, that my people would listen to me!
    Oh, that Israel would follow me, walking in my paths!
  • Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!
  • How quickly I would then subdue their enemies!
    How soon my hands would be upon their foes!
  • I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.
  • Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him;
    they would be doomed forever.
  • The haters of the LORD should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever.
  • But I would feed you with the finest wheat.
    I would satisfy you with wild honey from the rock.”
  • He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.
