New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • For the choir director: A psalm of the descendants of Korah. A song to be sung to the tune “The Suffering of Affliction.” A psalma of Heman the Ezrahite.

    O LORD, God of my salvation,
    I cry out to you by day.
    I come to you at night.
  • I Have Cried Day and Night Before You

    {A Song or Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician upon Mahalath Leannoth, Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite.} O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:
  • Now hear my prayer;
    listen to my cry.
  • Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;
  • For my life is full of troubles,
    and deathb draws near.
  • For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.
  • I am as good as dead,
    like a strong man with no strength left.
  • I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength:
  • They have left me among the dead,
    and I lie like a corpse in a grave.
    I am forgotten,
    cut off from your care.
  • Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.
  • You have thrown me into the lowest pit,
    into the darkest depths.
  • Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.
  • Your anger weighs me down;
    with wave after wave you have engulfed me.
    Interlude
  • Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.
  • You have driven my friends away
    by making me repulsive to them.
    I am in a trap with no way of escape.
  • Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.
  • My eyes are blinded by my tears.
    Each day I beg for your help, O LORD;
    I lift my hands to you for mercy.
  • Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee.
  • Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead?
    Do the dead rise up and praise you?
    Interlude
  • Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah.
  • Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love?
    Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?c
  • Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction?
  • Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds?
    Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?
  • Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
  • O LORD, I cry out to you.
    I will keep on pleading day by day.
  • But unto thee have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee.
  • O LORD, why do you reject me?
    Why do you turn your face from me?
  • LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?
  • I have been sick and close to death since my youth.
    I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.
  • I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.
  • Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me.
    Your terrors have paralyzed me.
  • Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off.
  • They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long.
    They have engulfed me completely.
  • They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together.
  • You have taken away my companions and loved ones.
    Darkness is my closest friend.
  • Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.
