Darby Bible Translation

  • Ten Commandments for the Covenant Community

Then God gave the people all these instructionsa:
  • The Ten Commandments

And God spoke all these words, saying,
  • “I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
  • I am Jehovah thy God, who have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
  • “You must not have any other god but me.
  • Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
  • “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
  • Thou shalt not make thyself any graven image, or any form of what is in the heavens above, or what is in the earth beneath, or what is in the waters under the earth:
  • You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected — even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
  • thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them; for I, Jehovah thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and to the fourth [generation] of them that hate me,
  • But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on thoseb who love me and obey my commands.
  • and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
  • “You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
  • Thou shalt not idly utter the name of Jehovah thy God; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that idly uttereth his name.
  • “Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
  • Remember the sabbath day to hallow it.
  • You have six days each week for your ordinary work,
  • Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work;
  • but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.
  • but the seventh day is the sabbath of Jehovah thy God: thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy bondman, nor thy handmaid, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.
  • For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
  • For in six days Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore Jehovah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
  • “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
  • Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be prolonged in the land that Jehovah thy God giveth thee.
  • “You must not murder.
  • Thou shalt not kill.
  • “You must not commit adultery.
  • Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  • “You must not steal.
  • Thou shalt not steal.
  • “You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
  • Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
  • “You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”
  • Thou shalt not desire thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not desire thy neighbour's wife, nor his bondman, nor his handmaid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour's.
  • When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.
  • Moses Comforts the People

And all the people saw the thunderings, and the flames, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw [it], they trembled, and stood afar off,
  • And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!”
  • and said to Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
  • “Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”
  • And Moses said to the people, Fear not; for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before you, that ye sin not.
  • As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was.
  • And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near to the obscurity where God was.

  • Proper Use of Altars

And the LORD said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven.
  • Idolatry Forbidden

And Jehovah said to Moses, Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: Ye have seen that I have spoken with you from the heavens.
  • Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me.
  • Ye shall not make beside me gods of silver, and ye shall not make to you gods of gold.
  • “Build for me an altar made of earth, and offer your sacrifices to me — your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats, and your cattle. Build my altar wherever I cause my name to be remembered, and I will come to you and bless you.
  • The Altar of Sacrifice

An altar of earth shalt thou make unto me, and shalt sacrifice on it thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep and thine oxen: in all places where I shall make my name to be remembered, I will come unto thee, and bless thee.
  • If you use stones to build my altar, use only natural, uncut stones. Do not shape the stones with a tool, for that would make the altar unfit for holy use.
  • And if thou make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone; for if thou lift up thy sharp tool upon it, thou hast profaned it.
  • And do not approach my altar by going up steps. If you do, someone might look up under your clothing and see your nakedness.
  • Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.
