New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • A Call for Justice

“You must not pass along false rumors. You must not cooperate with evil people by lying on the witness stand.
  • Justice and Mercy

Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.
  • “You must not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you are called to testify in a dispute, do not be swayed by the crowd to twist justice.
  • Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:
  • And do not slant your testimony in favor of a person just because that person is poor.
  • Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause.
  • “If you come upon your enemy’s ox or donkey that has strayed away, take it back to its owner.
  • If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again.
  • If you see that the donkey of someone who hates you has collapsed under its load, do not walk by. Instead, stop and help.
  • If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.
  • “In a lawsuit, you must not deny justice to the poor.
  • Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause.
  • “Be sure never to charge anyone falsely with evil. Never sentence an innocent or blameless person to death, for I never declare a guilty person to be innocent.
  • Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.
  • “Take no bribes, for a bribe makes you ignore something that you clearly see. A bribe makes even a righteous person twist the truth.
  • And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.
  • “You must not oppress foreigners. You know what it’s like to be a foreigner, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.
  • Also thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
  • “Plant and harvest your crops for six years,
  • Sabbath Laws

And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof:
  • but let the land be renewed and lie uncultivated during the seventh year. Then let the poor among you harvest whatever grows on its own. Leave the rest for wild animals to eat. The same applies to your vineyards and olive groves.
  • But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard.
  • “You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you must stop working. This gives your ox and your donkey a chance to rest. It also allows your slaves and the foreigners living among you to be refreshed.
  • Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.
  • “Pay close attention to all my instructions. You must not call on the name of any other gods. Do not even speak their names.
  • And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.

  • Three Annual Festivals

“Each year you must celebrate three festivals in my honor.
  • Three Yearly Feasts

Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year.
  • First, celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast, just as I commanded you. Celebrate this festival annually at the appointed time in early spring, in the month of Abib,a for that is the anniversary of your departure from Egypt. No one may appear before me without an offering.
  • Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:)
  • “Second, celebrate the Festival of Harvest,b when you bring me the first crops of your harvest.
“Finally, celebrate the Festival of the Final Harvestc at the end of the harvest season, when you have harvested all the crops from your fields.
  • And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field.
  • At these three times each year, every man in Israel must appear before the Sovereign, the LORD.
  • Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord GOD.
  • “You must not offer the blood of my sacrificial offerings together with any baked goods containing yeast. And do not leave the fat from the festival offerings until the next morning.
  • Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning.
  • “As you harvest your crops, bring the very best of the first harvest to the house of the LORD your God.
“You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.
  • The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

  • A Promise of the LORD’s Presence

“See, I am sending an angel before you to protect you on your journey and lead you safely to the place I have prepared for you.
  • God's Angel to Lead

Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.
  • Pay close attention to him, and obey his instructions. Do not rebel against him, for he is my representative, and he will not forgive your rebellion.
  • Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.
  • But if you are careful to obey him, following all my instructions, then I will be an enemy to your enemies, and I will oppose those who oppose you.
  • But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.
  • For my angel will go before you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites, so you may live there. And I will destroy them completely.
  • For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off.
  • You must not worship the gods of these nations or serve them in any way or imitate their evil practices. Instead, you must utterly destroy them and smash their sacred pillars.
  • Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.
  • “You must serve only the LORD your God. If you do, Id will bless you with food and water, and I will protect you from illness.
  • And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.
  • There will be no miscarriages or infertility in your land, and I will give you long, full lives.
  • There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.
  • “I will send my terror ahead of you and create panic among all the people whose lands you invade. I will make all your enemies turn and run.
  • I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.
  • I will send terrore ahead of you to drive out the Hivites, Canaanites, and Hittites.
  • And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.
  • But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals would multiply and threaten you.
  • I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee.
  • I will drive them out a little at a time until your population has increased enough to take possession of the land.
  • By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land.
  • And I will fix your boundaries from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea,f and from the eastern wilderness to the Euphrates River.g I will hand over to you the people now living in the land, and you will drive them out ahead of you.
  • And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.
  • “Make no treaties with them or their gods.
  • Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.
  • They must not live in your land, or they will cause you to sin against me. If you serve their gods, you will be caught in the trap of idolatry.”
  • They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.
