Darby Bible Translation

  • Aaron’s Staff Becomes a Serpent

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pay close attention to this. I will make you seem like God to Pharaoh, and your brother, Aaron, will be your prophet.
  • I will Stretch Out My Hand

And Jehovah said to Moses, See, I have made thee God to Pharaoh; and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.
  • Tell Aaron everything I command you, and Aaron must command Pharaoh to let the people of Israel leave his country.
  • Thou shalt speak all that I command thee; and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.
  • But I will make Pharaoh’s heart stubborn so I can multiply my miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt.
  • And I will render Pharaoh's heart obdurate, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.
  • Even then Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you. So I will bring down my fist on Egypt. Then I will rescue my forces — my people, the Israelites — from the land of Egypt with great acts of judgment.
  • And Pharaoh will not hearken unto you; and I will lay my hand upon Egypt, and bring forth my hosts, my people, the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.
  • When I raise my powerful hand and bring out the Israelites, the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.”
  • And the Egyptians shall know that I am Jehovah, when I stretch forth my hand on Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.
  • So Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded them.
  • And Moses and Aaron did as Jehovah had commanded them: so did they.
  • Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three when they made their demands to Pharaoh.
  • And Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.
  • Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
  • Aaron's Staff Becomes a Serpent

And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
  • “Pharaoh will demand, ‘Show me a miracle.’ When he does this, say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down in front of Pharaoh, and it will become a serpent.a’”
  • When Pharaoh shall speak to you, saying, Do a miracle for yourselves, -- then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy staff and cast [it] before Pharaoh -- it will become a serpent.
  • So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did what the LORD had commanded them. Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent!
  • And Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and did so, as Jehovah had commanded; and Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh, and before his bondmen, and it became a serpent.
  • Then Pharaoh called in his own wise men and sorcerers, and these Egyptian magicians did the same thing with their magic.
  • And Pharaoh also called the sages and the sorcerers; and they too, the scribes of Egypt, did so with their enchantments:
  • They threw down their staffs, which also became serpents! But then Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs.
  • they cast down every man his staff, and they became serpents; but Aaron's staff swallowed up their staves.
  • Pharaoh’s heart, however, remained hard. He still refused to listen, just as the LORD had predicted.
  • And Pharaoh's heart was stubborn, and he hearkened not to them, as Jehovah had said.

  • A Plague of Blood

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is stubborn,b and he still refuses to let the people go.
  • The First Plague: Blood

And Jehovah said to Moses, Pharaoh's heart is hardened: he refuseth to let the people go.
  • So go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes down to the river. Stand on the bank of the Nile and meet him there. Be sure to take along the staff that turned into a snake.
  • Go unto Pharaoh in the morning -- behold, he will go out unto the water -- and take thy stand by the bank of the river in front of him; and take in thy hand the staff that was turned into a serpent.
  • Then announce to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to tell you, “Let my people go, so they can worship me in the wilderness.” Until now, you have refused to listen to him.
  • And say unto him, Jehovah the God of the Hebrews has sent me to thee, saying, Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness; but behold, hitherto thou hast not hearkened.
  • So this is what the LORD says: “I will show you that I am the LORD.” Look! I will strike the water of the Nile with this staff in my hand, and the river will turn to blood.
  • Thus saith Jehovah: In this shalt thou know that I am Jehovah -- behold, I will smite with the staff that is in my hand upon the water which is in the river, and it shall be turned into blood.
  • The fish in it will die, and the river will stink. The Egyptians will not be able to drink any water from the Nile.’”
  • And the fish that is in the river shall die; and the river shall stink; and the Egyptians shall loathe to drink the water out of the river.
  • Then the LORD said to Moses: “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and raise your hand over the waters of Egypt — all its rivers, canals, ponds, and all the reservoirs. Turn all the water to blood. Everywhere in Egypt the water will turn to blood, even the water stored in wooden bowls and stone pots.’”
  • And Jehovah said to Moses, Say unto Aaron, Take thy staff, and stretch out thy hand upon the waters of the Egyptians -- upon their streams, upon their rivers, and upon their ponds, and upon all their reservoirs of water, that they may become blood; and there shall be blood throughout the land of Egypt, both in [vessels of] wood and in [vessels of] stone.
  • So Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD commanded them. As Pharaoh and all of his officials watched, Aaron raised his staff and struck the water of the Nile. Suddenly, the whole river turned to blood!
  • And Moses and Aaron did so, as Jehovah had commanded; and he lifted up the staff, and smote the waters that were in the river before the eyes of Pharaoh, and before the eyes of his bondmen; and all the waters that were in the river were turned into blood.
  • The fish in the river died, and the water became so foul that the Egyptians couldn’t drink it. There was blood everywhere throughout the land of Egypt.
  • And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink the water of the river; and the blood was throughout the land of Egypt.
  • But again the magicians of Egypt used their magic, and they, too, turned water into blood. So Pharaoh’s heart remained hard. He refused to listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had predicted.
  • And the scribes of Egypt did so with their sorceries; and Pharaoh's heart was stubborn, neither did he hearken to them, as Jehovah had said.
  • Pharaoh returned to his palace and put the whole thing out of his mind.
  • And Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and took not this to heart either.
  • Then all the Egyptians dug along the riverbank to find drinking water, for they couldn’t drink the water from the Nile.
  • And all the Egyptians dug round about the river for water to drink; for they could not drink of the water of the river.
  • Seven days passed from the time the LORD struck the Nile.
  • And seven days were fulfilled, after Jehovah had smitten the river.
