The Purpose of Proverbs

These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel.

При́повісті Соломона, сина Давидового, царя Ізраїлевого, —

Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline,
to help them understand the insights of the wise.

щоб пізна́ти премудрість і карність, щоб зрозуміти розсу́дні слова,

Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives,
to help them do what is right, just, and fair.

щоб прийняти напоу́млення мудрости, праведности, і пра́ва й простоти,

These proverbs will give insight to the simple,
knowledge and discernment to the young.

щоб мудрости дати простоду́шним, юнако́ві — пізна́ння й розва́жність.

Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser.
Let those with understanding receive guidance

Хай послухає мудрий — і примно́жить науку, а розумний здобу́де хай мудрих думо́к,

by exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables,
the words of the wise and their riddles.

Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
A Father’s Exhortation: Acquire Wisdom

Страх Господній — початок прему́дрости, — нерозумні пого́рджують мудрістю та напу́чуванням.

8

My child,a listen when your father corrects you.
Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.

Послухай, мій сину, напу́чення батька свого́, і не відкидай науки матері своєї, —

9

What you learn from them will crown you with grace
and be a chain of honor around your neck.

вони бо хороший вінок для твоєї голови, і прикра́са на шию твою.

10

My child, if sinners entice you,
turn your back on them!

10

Мій сину, як грішники будуть тебе намовляти, — то з ними не згоджуйся ти !

They may say, “Come and join us.
Let’s hide and kill someone!
Just for fun, let’s ambush the innocent!

Якщо скажуть вони: „Ходи з нами, чатуймо на кров, безпричи́нно засядьмо на неповинного,

12

Let’s swallow them alive, like the graveb;
let’s swallow them whole, like those who go down to the pit of death.

живих поковтаймо ми їх, як шео́л, та здорових, як тих, які сходять до гро́бу!

13

Think of the great things we’ll get!
We’ll fill our houses with all the stuff we take.

Ми зна́йдемо всіляке багатство цінне́, перепо́внимо здо́биччю наші хати́.

14

Come, throw in your lot with us;
we’ll all share the loot.”

Жеребо́к свій ти кинеш із нами, — буде са́ква одна для всіх нас“, —

15

My child, don’t go along with them!
Stay far away from their paths.

сину мій, — не ходи ти доро́гою з ними, спини́ но́гу свою від їхньої сте́жки,

16

They rush to commit evil deeds.
They hurry to commit murder.

бо біжать їхні но́ги на зло, і поспішають, щоб кров проливати!

17

If a bird sees a trap being set,
it knows to stay away.

Бож нада́рмо поставлена сі́тка на о́чах усього крила́того:

18

But these people set an ambush for themselves;
they are trying to get themselves killed.

то вони на кров власну чату́ють, засідають на душу свою!

19

Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money;
it robs them of life.
Wisdom Shouts in the Streets

Такі то доро́ги усіх, хто за́здрий чужого добра: воно́ бере душу свого власника́!

20

Wisdom shouts in the streets.
She cries out in the public square.

20

Кличе мудрість на вулиці, на пло́щах свій голос дає,

21

She calls to the crowds along the main street,
to those gathered in front of the city gate:

на шумли́вих місцях проповідує, у місті при входах до брам вона каже слова́ свої:

22

“How long, you simpletons,
will you insist on being simpleminded?
How long will you mockers relish your mocking?
How long will you fools hate knowledge?

„Доки ви, нерозумні, глупо́ту любитимете? Аж доки насмі́шники будуть кохатись собі в глузува́нні, а безглу́зді нена́видіти будуть знания?

23

Come and listen to my counsel.
I’ll share my heart with you
and make you wise.

23

Зверніться но ви до карта́ння мого́, — ось я виллю вам духа свого, сповіщу́ вам слова свої!

24

“I called you so often, but you wouldn’t come.
I reached out to you, but you paid no attention.

24

Бо кликала я, та відмовились ви, простягла́ була руку свою, та ніхто не прислу́хувався!

25

You ignored my advice
and rejected the correction I offered.

25

І всю раду мою ви відкинули, карта́ння ж мого не схотіли!

26

So I will laugh when you are in trouble!
I will mock you when disaster overtakes you —

Тож у вашім нещасті сміятися буду і я, насміха́тися буду, як при́йде ваш страх.

27

when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when disaster engulfs you like a cyclone,
and anguish and distress overwhelm you.

27

Коли при́йде ваш страх, немов вихор, і прива́литься ваше нещастя, мов буря, як при́йде недоля та у́тиск на вас,

28

“When they cry for help, I will not answer.
Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me.

28

тоді кликати бу́дуть мене, але не відпові́м, будуть шукати мене, та не зна́йдуть мене, —

29

For they hated knowledge
and chose not to fear the LORD.

29

за те, що науку знена́виділи, і не ви́брали стра́ху Господнього,

30

They rejected my advice
and paid no attention when I corrected them.

30

не хотіли поради моєї, пого́рджували всіма моїми доко́рами!

31

Therefore, they must eat the bitter fruit of living their own way,
choking on their own schemes.

31

І тому́ хай їдять вони з пло́ду дороги своєї, а з порад своїх хай насища́ються, —

32

For simpletons turn away from me — to death.
Fools are destroyed by their own complacency.

32

бо відсту́пство безумних заб'є їх, і безпе́чність безтя́мних їх ви́губить!

33

But all who listen to me will live in peace,
untroubled by fear of harm.”

33

А хто мене слухає, той буде жити безпе́чно, і буде спокійний від страху перед злом!“
