A Father’s Wise Advice

My children,a listen when your father corrects you.
Pay attention and learn good judgment,

1

Послухайте, діти, напу́чення батькового, і прислу́хайтеся, щоб навчитися розуму,

2

for I am giving you good guidance.
Don’t turn away from my instructions.

бо даю́ я вам добру науку: зако́на мого не кидайте,

3

For I, too, was once my father’s son,
tenderly loved as my mother’s only child.

бо сином у ба́тька свого я був, пеще́ний й єдиний у неньки своєї.

4

My father taught me,
“Take my words to heart.
Follow my commands, and you will live.

І навчав він мене, і мені говорив: Нехай де́ржиться серце твоє моїх слів, стережи́ мої заповіді та й живи!

5

Get wisdom; develop good judgment.
Don’t forget my words or turn away from them.

Здобудь мудрість, здобудь собі розум, не забудь, і не цурайся слів моїх уст, —

6

Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you.
Love her, and she will guard you.

не кидай її — й вона буде тебе стерегти́! кохай ти її — й вона буде тебе пильнувати!

7

Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do!
And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.

Початок премудрости — мудрість здобудь, а за ввесь свій маєток здобудь собі розуму!

If you prize wisdom, she will make you great.
Embrace her, and she will honor you.

Тримай її ви́соко — і піді́йме тебе, ушанує тебе, як її ти приго́рнеш:

9

She will place a lovely wreath on your head;
she will present you with a beautiful crown.”

вона дасть голові твоїй гарний вінок, пишну корону тобі подарує!

10

My child,b listen to me and do as I say,
and you will have a long, good life.

Послухай, мій сину, й бери ти слова́ мої, і помно́жаться роки твойого життя, —

11

I will teach you wisdom’s ways
and lead you in straight paths.

дороги премудрости вчу я тебе, стежка́ми прями́ми прова́джу тебе:

12

When you walk, you won’t be held back;
when you run, you won’t stumble.

коли пі́деш, то крок твій не буде тісни́й, а коли побіжиш — не спіткне́шся!

13

Take hold of my instructions; don’t let them go.
Guard them, for they are the key to life.

13

Міцно тримайся напу́чування, не лишай, його стережи́, — воно бо життя твоє!

14

Don’t do as the wicked do,
and don’t follow the path of evildoers.

На сте́жку безбожних не йди, і не ходи на дорогу лихих, —

15

Don’t even think about it; don’t go that way.
Turn away and keep moving.

15

покинь ти її, не йди нею, усунься від неї й мини, —

16

For evil people can’t sleep until they’ve done their evil deed for the day.
They can’t rest until they’ve caused someone to stumble.

бо вони не заснуть, якщо злого не вчинять, віді́йметься сон їм, як не зроблять кому, щоб спіткну́вся!

17

They eat the food of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence!

Бо вони хліб безбожжя їдять, і вино грабежу́ попива́ють.

18

The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,
which shines ever brighter until the full light of day.

А путь праведних — ніби те світло ясне́, що світить все більше та більш аж до по́вного дня!

19

But the way of the wicked is like total darkness.
They have no idea what they are stumbling over.

Дорога ж безбожних — як те́мність: не знають, об що́ спотикну́ться.

20

My child, pay attention to what I say.
Listen carefully to my words.

20

Мій сину, прислу́хуйся до моїх слів, до рече́й моїх ухо своє нахили́!

21

Don’t lose sight of them.
Let them penetrate deep into your heart,

Нехай не віді́йдуть вони від оче́й твоїх, бережи їх в сере́дині серця свого!

22

for they bring life to those who find them,
and healing to their whole body.

22

Бо життя вони тим, хто їх зна́йде, а для тіла усього його лікува́ння.

23

Guard your heart above all else,
for it determines the course of your life.

Над усе, що лише стереже́ться, серце своє стережи́, бо з нього похо́дить життя.

24

Avoid all perverse talk;
stay away from corrupt speech.

24

Відкинь ти від себе лука́вство уст, віддали ти від себе круті́йство губ.

25

Look straight ahead,
and fix your eyes on what lies before you.

25

Нехай дивляться очі твої упере́д, а пові́ки твої нехай перед тобою просту́ють.

26

Mark out a straight path for your feet;
stay on the safe path.

Стежку ніг своїх ви́рівняй, і стануть міцні всі дороги твої:

27

Don’t get sidetracked;
keep your feet from following evil.

27

не вступайся ні вправо, ні вліво, — усунь свою но́гу від зла!
