New Living Translation

English Standard Version

  • Wisdom has built her house;
    she has carved its seven columns.
  • The Way of Wisdom

    Wisdom has built her house;
    she has hewn her seven pillars.
  • She has prepared a great banquet,
    mixed the wines, and set the table.
  • She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine;
    she has also set her table.
  • She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come.
    She calls out from the heights overlooking the city.
  • She has sent out her young women to call
    from the highest places in the town,
  • “Come in with me,” she urges the simple.
    To those who lack good judgment, she says,
  • “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
    To him who lacks sense she says,
  • “Come, eat my food,
    and drink the wine I have mixed.
  • “Come, eat of my bread
    and drink of the wine I have mixed.
  • Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live;
    learn to use good judgment.”
  • Leave your simple ways,a and live,
    and walk in the way of insight.”
  • Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return.
    Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt.
  • Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse,
    and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.
  • So don’t bother correcting mockers;
    they will only hate you.
    But correct the wise,
    and they will love you.
  • Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;
    reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
  • Instruct the wise,
    and they will be even wiser.
    Teach the righteous,
    and they will learn even more.
  • Give instructionb to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
    teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
  • Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom.
    Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.
  • The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
    and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
  • Wisdom will multiply your days
    and add years to your life.
  • For by me your days will be multiplied,
    and years will be added to your life.
  • If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit.
    If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.
    Folly Calls for a Hearing
  • If you are wise, you are wise for yourself;
    if you scoff, you alone will bear it.
  • The woman named Folly is brash.
    She is ignorant and doesn’t know it.
  • The Way of Folly

    The woman Folly is loud;
    she is seductivec and knows nothing.
  • She sits in her doorway
    on the heights overlooking the city.
  • She sits at the door of her house;
    she takes a seat on the highest places of the town,
  • She calls out to men going by
    who are minding their own business.
  • calling to those who pass by,
    who are going straight on their way,
  • “Come in with me,” she urges the simple.
    To those who lack good judgment, she says,
  • “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
    And to him who lacks sense she says,
  • “Stolen water is refreshing;
    food eaten in secret tastes the best!”
  • “Stolen water is sweet,
    and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”
  • But little do they know that the dead are there.
    Her guests are in the depths of the grave.a
  • But he does not know that the deadd are there,
    that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.
