New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • Judgment against Judah

    The Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies,
    will take away from Jerusalem and Judah
    everything they depend on:
    every bit of bread
    and every drop of water,
  • Judgment on Judah and Jerusalem

    For behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts,
    Takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah
    The[a] stock and the store,
    The whole supply of bread and the whole supply of water;
  • all their heroes and soldiers,
    judges and prophets,
    fortune-tellers and elders,
  • The mighty man and the man of war,
    The judge and the prophet,
    And the diviner and the elder;
  • army officers and high officials,
    advisers, skilled sorcerers, and astrologers.
  • The captain of fifty and the [b]honorable man,
    The counselor and the skillful artisan,
    And the expert enchanter.
  • I will make boys their leaders,
    and toddlers their rulers.
  • “I will give children[c] to be their princes,
    And [d]babes shall rule over them.
  • People will oppress each other —
    man against man,
    neighbor against neighbor.
    Young people will insult their elders,
    and vulgar people will sneer at the honorable.
  • The people will be oppressed,
    Every one by another and every one by his neighbor;
    The child will be insolent toward the [e]elder,
    And the [f]base toward the honorable.”
  • In those days a man will say to his brother,
    “Since you have a coat, you be our leader!
    Take charge of this heap of ruins!”
  • When a man takes hold of his brother
    In the house of his father, saying,
    “You have clothing;
    You be our ruler,
    And let these ruins be under your [g]power,”
  • But he will reply,
    “No! I can’t help.
    I don’t have any extra food or clothes.
    Don’t put me in charge!”
  • In that day he will protest, saying,
    “I cannot cure your ills,
    For in my house is neither food nor clothing;
    Do not make me a ruler of the people.”
  • For Jerusalem will stumble,
    and Judah will fall,
    because they speak out against the LORD and refuse to obey him.
    They provoke him to his face.
  • For Jerusalem stumbled,
    And Judah is fallen,
    Because their tongue and their doings
    Are against the Lord,
    To provoke the eyes of His glory.
  • The very look on their faces gives them away.
    They display their sin like the people of Sodom
    and don’t even try to hide it.
    They are doomed!
    They have brought destruction upon themselves.
  • The look on their countenance witnesses against them,
    And they declare their sin as Sodom;
    They do not hide it.
    Woe to their soul!
    For they have brought evil upon themselves.
  • Tell the godly that all will be well for them.
    They will enjoy the rich reward they have earned!
  • “Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them,
    For they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
  • But the wicked are doomed,
    for they will get exactly what they deserve.
  • Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him,
    For the reward of his hands shall be [h]given him.
  • Childish leaders oppress my people,
    and women rule over them.
    O my people, your leaders mislead you;
    they send you down the wrong road.
  • As for My people, children are their oppressors,
    And women rule over them.
    O My people! Those who lead you [i]cause you to err,
    And destroy the way of your paths.”
  • The LORD takes his place in court
    and presents his case against his people.a
  • Oppression and Luxury Condemned

    The Lord stands up to [j]plead,
    And stands to judge the people.
  • The LORD comes forward to pronounce judgment
    on the elders and rulers of his people:
    “You have ruined Israel, my vineyard.
    Your houses are filled with things stolen from the poor.
  • The Lord will enter into judgment
    With the elders of His people
    And His princes:
    “For you have [k]eaten up the vineyard;
    The plunder of the poor is in your houses.
  • How dare you crush my people,
    grinding the faces of the poor into the dust?”
    demands the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.
    A Warning to Jerusalem
  • What do you mean by crushing My people
    And grinding the faces of the poor?”
    Says the Lord God of hosts.
  • The LORD says, “Beautiful Zionb is haughty:
    craning her elegant neck,
    flirting with her eyes,
    walking with dainty steps,
    tinkling her ankle bracelets.
  • Moreover the Lord says:
    “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty,
    And walk with [l]outstretched necks
    And [m]wanton eyes,
    Walking and [n]mincing as they go,
    Making a jingling with their feet,
  • So the Lord will send scabs on her head;
    the LORD will make beautiful Zion bald.”
  • Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab
    The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion,
    And the Lord will uncover their secret parts.”
  • On that day of judgment
    the Lord will strip away everything that makes her beautiful:
    ornaments, headbands, crescent necklaces,
  • In that day the Lord will take away the finery:
    The jingling anklets, the [o]scarves, and the crescents;
  • earrings, bracelets, and veils;
  • The pendants, the bracelets, and the veils;
  • scarves, ankle bracelets, sashes,
    perfumes, and charms;
  • The headdresses, the leg ornaments, and the headbands;
    The perfume boxes, the charms,
  • rings, jewels,
  • and the rings;
    The nose jewels,
  • party clothes, gowns, capes, and purses;
  • the festal apparel, and the mantles;
    The outer garments, the purses,
  • mirrors, fine linen garments,
    head ornaments, and shawls.
  • and the mirrors;
    The fine linen, the turbans, and the robes.
  • Instead of smelling of sweet perfume, she will stink.
    She will wear a rope for a sash,
    and her elegant hair will fall out.
    She will wear rough burlap instead of rich robes.
    Shame will replace her beauty.c
  • And so it shall be:
    Instead of a sweet smell there will be a stench;
    Instead of a sash, a rope;
    Instead of well-set hair, baldness;
    Instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth;
    And [p]branding instead of beauty.
  • The men of the city will be killed with the sword,
    and her warriors will die in battle.
  • Your men shall fall by the sword,
    And your [q]mighty in the war.
  • The gates of Zion will weep and mourn.
    The city will be like a ravaged woman,
    huddled on the ground.
  • Her gates shall lament and mourn,
    And she being desolate shall sit on the ground.
