Darby Bible Translation

  • The Futility of Relying on Egypt

    What sorrow awaits those who look to Egypt for help,
    trusting their horses, chariots, and charioteers
    and depending on the strength of human armies
    instead of looking to the LORD,
    the Holy One of Israel.
  • Woe to Those Relying on Egypt

    Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help, and depend on horses, and confide in chariots because [they are] many, and in horsemen because they are very strong; and who look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek Jehovah!
  • In his wisdom, the LORD will send great disaster;
    he will not change his mind.
    He will rise against the wicked
    and against their helpers.
  • But he also is wise, and he bringeth evil, and recalleth not his words; and he will arise against the house of evildoers, and against the help of workers of iniquity.
  • For these Egyptians are mere humans, not God!
    Their horses are puny flesh, not mighty spirits!
    When the LORD raises his fist against them,
    those who help will stumble,
    and those being helped will fall.
    They will all fall down and die together.
  • And the Egyptians are men, and not God, and their horses flesh, and not spirit; and Jehovah shall stretch forth his hand, and he that helpeth shall stumble, and he that is helped shall fall, and they all shall perish together.
  • But this is what the LORD has told me:
    “When a strong young lion
    stands growling over a sheep it has killed,
    it is not frightened by the shouts and noise
    of a whole crowd of shepherds.
    In the same way, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies
    will come down and fight on Mount Zion.
  • For thus hath Jehovah said unto me: Like as the lion and the young lion growling over his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, is not afraid of their voice, nor giveth way before the multitude of them; so will Jehovah of hosts come down to war upon mount Zion, and on the hill thereof.
  • The LORD of Heaven’s Armies will hover over Jerusalem
    and protect it like a bird protecting its nest.
    He will defend and save the city;
    he will pass over it and rescue it.”
  • As birds with outstretched wings, so will Jehovah of hosts cover Jerusalem; covering, he will also deliver, passing over, he will rescue [it].
  • Though you are such wicked rebels, my people, come and return to the LORD.
  • Turn unto him from whom ye have deeply revolted, ye children of Israel;
  • I know the glorious day will come when each of you will throw away the gold idols and silver images your sinful hands have made.
  • for in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver and his idols of gold, which your sinful hands have made unto you.
  • “The Assyrians will be destroyed,
    but not by the swords of men.
    The sword of God will strike them,
    and they will panic and flee.
    The strong young Assyrians
    will be taken away as captives.
  • And Asshur shall fall by the sword, not of a great man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: and he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall become tributary;
  • Even the strongest will quake with terror,
    and princes will flee when they see your battle flags,”
    says the LORD, whose fire burns in Zion,
    whose flame blazes from Jerusalem.
  • and for fear, he shall pass over to his rock, and his princes shall be afraid of the banner, saith Jehovah, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.
