New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • Judah’s Sin and Punishment

    “The sin of Judah
    is inscribed with an iron chisel —
    engraved with a diamond point on their stony hearts
    and on the corners of their altars.
  • The Sin and Punishment of Judah

    The sin of Judah is written with a style of iron, with the point of a diamond, engraven upon the tablet of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars;
  • Even their children go to worship
    at their pagan altars and Asherah poles,
    beneath every green tree
    and on every high hill.
  • whilst their children remember their altars and their Asherahs, by the green trees, upon the high hills.
  • So I will hand over my holy mountain —
    along with all your wealth and treasures
    and your pagan shrines —
    as plunder to your enemies,
    for sin runs rampant in your land.
  • My mountain in the field, thy substance, all thy treasures will I give for a spoil, -- thy high places, because of sin throughout thy borders.
  • The wonderful possession I have reserved for you
    will slip from your hands.
    I will tell your enemies to take you
    as captives to a foreign land.
    For my anger blazes like a fire
    that will burn forever.”
    Wisdom from the LORD
  • And of thyself thou shalt let go thine inheritance which I gave thee; and I will cause thee to serve thine enemies in a land that thou knowest not; for ye have kindled a fire in mine anger, -- it shall burn for ever.
  • This is what the LORD says:
    “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans,
    who rely on human strength
    and turn their hearts away from the LORD.
  • Thus saith Jehovah: Cursed is the man that confideth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from Jehovah.
  • They are like stunted shrubs in the desert,
    with no hope for the future.
    They will live in the barren wilderness,
    in an uninhabited salty land.
  • And he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but he shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited.
  • “But blessed are those who trust in the LORD
    and have made the LORD their hope and confidence.
  • Blessed is the man that confideth in Jehovah, and whose confidence Jehovah is.
  • They are like trees planted along a riverbank,
    with roots that reach deep into the water.
    Such trees are not bothered by the heat
    or worried by long months of drought.
    Their leaves stay green,
    and they never stop producing fruit.
  • For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out its roots by the stream, and he shall not see when heat cometh, but his leaf shall be green; and in the year of drought he shall not be careful, neither shall he cease to yield fruit.
  • “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
    and desperately wicked.
    Who really knows how bad it is?
  • The heart is deceitful above all things, and incurable; who can know it?
  • But I, the LORD, search all hearts
    and examine secret motives.
    I give all people their due rewards,
    according to what their actions deserve.”
    Jeremiah’s Trust in the LORD
  • I Jehovah search the heart, I try the reins, even to give each one according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.
  • Like a partridge that hatches eggs she has not laid,
    so are those who get their wealth by unjust means.
    At midlife they will lose their riches;
    in the end, they will become poor old fools.
  • [As] the partridge sitteth on [eggs] it hath not laid, [so] is he that getteth riches and not by right: in the midst of his days shall he leave them, and at his end shall be a fool.
  • But we worship at your throne —
    eternal, high, and glorious!
  • Jeremiah's Prayer for Deliverance

    A throne of glory, [set] on high from the beginning, is the place of our sanctuary.
  • O LORD, the hope of Israel,
    all who turn away from you will be disgraced.
    They will be buried in the dust of the earth,
    for they have abandoned the LORD, the fountain of living water.
  • Thou hope of Israel, Jehovah! all that forsake thee shall be ashamed. They that depart from me shall be written in the earth; because they have forsaken Jehovah, the fountain of living waters.
  • O LORD, if you heal me, I will be truly healed;
    if you save me, I will be truly saved.
    My praises are for you alone!
  • Heal me, Jehovah, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.
  • People scoff at me and say,
    “What is this ‘message from the LORD’ you talk about?
    Why don’t your predictions come true?”
  • Behold, these say unto me, Where is the word of Jehovah? let it then come!
  • LORD, I have not abandoned my job
    as a shepherd for your people.
    I have not urged you to send disaster.
    You have heard everything I’ve said.
  • But as for me, I have not hastened from being a shepherd in following thee, neither have I desired the fatal day, thou knowest: that which came out of my lips was before thy face.
  • LORD, don’t terrorize me!
    You alone are my hope in the day of disaster.
  • Be not a terror unto me: thou art my refuge in the day of evil.
  • Bring shame and dismay on all who persecute me,
    but don’t let me experience shame and dismay.
    Bring a day of terror on them.
    Yes, bring double destruction upon them!
  • Let them be ashamed that persecute me, but let not me be ashamed; let them be dismayed, but let not me be dismayed; bring upon them the day of evil, and break them with a double breaking.

  • Observing the Sabbath

    This is what the LORD said to me: “Go and stand in the gates of Jerusalem, first in the gate where the king goes in and out, and then in each of the other gates.
  • The Sabbath Renewed

    Thus hath Jehovah said unto me: Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, by which the kings of Judah come in, and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem;
  • Say to all the people, ‘Listen to this message from the LORD, you kings of Judah and all you people of Judah and everyone living in Jerusalem.
  • and say unto them, Hear the word of Jehovah, ye kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates;
  • This is what the LORD says: Listen to my warning! Stop carrying on your trade at Jerusalem’s gates on the Sabbath day.
  • thus saith Jehovah: Take heed to your souls, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, and bring nothing in through the gates of Jerusalem;
  • Do not do your work on the Sabbath, but make it a holy day. I gave this command to your ancestors,
  • and carry forth no burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do any work; but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers,
  • but they did not listen or obey. They stubbornly refused to pay attention or accept my discipline.
  • but they hearkened not, neither inclined their ear, but hardened their neck, that they might not hear nor receive instruction.
  • “‘But if you obey me, says the LORD, and do not carry on your trade at the gates or work on the Sabbath day, and if you keep it holy,
  • And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith Jehovah, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, and to hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;
  • then kings and their officials will go in and out of these gates forever. There will always be a descendant of David sitting on the throne here in Jerusalem. Kings and their officials will always ride in and out among the people of Judah in chariots and on horses, and this city will remain forever.
  • then shall there enter in, through the gates of this city, kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall be inhabited for ever.
  • And from all around Jerusalem, from the towns of Judah and Benjamin, from the western foothillsa and the hill country and the Negev, the people will come with their burnt offerings and sacrifices. They will bring their grain offerings, frankincense, and thanksgiving offerings to the LORD’s Temple.
  • And they shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places around Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the lowland, and from the hill-country, and from the south, bringing burnt-offerings, and sacrifices, and oblations, and incense, and bringing thanksgiving unto the house of Jehovah.
  • “‘But if you do not listen to me and refuse to keep the Sabbath holy, and if on the Sabbath day you bring loads of merchandise through the gates of Jerusalem just as on other days, then I will set fire to these gates. The fire will spread to the palaces, and no one will be able to put out the roaring flames.’”
  • But if ye will not hearken unto me, to hallow the sabbath day and not to bear a burden and enter in through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day, then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.
