A Message about Moab

This message was given concerning Moab. This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says:
“What sorrow awaits the city of Nebo;
it will soon lie in ruins.
The city of Kiriathaim will be humiliated and captured;
the fortress will be humiliated and broken down.

На Моава. Так каже Господь Саваот, Бог Ізраїлів: „Горе місту Нево, бо воно поруйно́ване; Кір'ятаїм посоро́млений, здобутий; посоро́млений За́мок високий, заля́каний.

2

No one will ever brag about Moab again,
for in Heshbon there is a plot to destroy her.
‘Come,’ they say, ‘we will cut her off from being a nation.’
The town of Madmen,a too, will be silenced;
the sword will follow you there.

Нема більше слави Моа́ву! У Хешбоні лихе вимишляють на нього: „Ходімо, і ви́тнім його із наро́ду!“ Теж, Мадмене, замо́вкнеш і ти: за тобою йде меч!

Listen to the cries from Horonaim,
cries of devastation and great destruction.

Чути крик із Горона́їму: Руїна й нещастя велике!

4

All Moab is destroyed.
Her little ones will cry out.b

Моав поруйно́ваний, крик підняли́ аж до Цоару,

5

Her refugees weep bitterly,
climbing the slope to Luhith.
They cry out in terror,
descending the slope to Horonaim.

бо ходом в Лухіт пі́дуть догори́ з великим плаче́м, бо на збіччі Горонаїму чути крик боязки́й про руїну.

Flee for your lives!
Hidec in the wilderness!

Утікайте, рятуйте хоч душу свою, і станете, мов отой ве́рес в пустині!

7

Because you have trusted in your wealth and skill,
you will be taken captive.
Your god Chemosh, with his priests and officials,
will be hauled off to distant lands!

Бо за те, що наді́явся ти на вчинки свої та на ска́рби свої, ти тако́ж будеш узятий, і пі́де Кемош до поло́ну, а ра́зом із ним його священики та його зве́рхники.

8

“All the towns will be destroyed,
and no one will escape —
either on the plateaus or in the valleys,
for the LORD has spoken.

І при́йде руїна до кожного міста, і не буде врято́ване жодне із них, і загине долина, й погу́блена буде рівни́на, бо так говорив був Господь!

9

Oh, that Moab had wings
so she could fly away,d
for her towns will be left empty,
with no one living in them.

9

Дайте крила Моаву, — і він відлети́ть, і міста́ його стануть спусто́шенням, так що не буде мешка́нця у них.

10

Cursed are those who refuse to do the LORD’s work,
who hold back their swords from shedding blood!

Прокля́тий, хто робить роботу Господню недба́ло, і прокля́тий, хто від крови меча свого стримує!

11

“From his earliest history, Moab has lived in peace,
never going into exile.
He is like wine that has been allowed to settle.
He has not been poured from flask to flask,
and he is now fragrant and smooth.

Спокійний Моав від юна́цтва свого, і мирний на дрі́жджах своїх, і не лито із по́суду в по́суд його, і він на вигна́ння не йшов, тому в нім його смак позост́ався, а за́пах його не змінився.

12

But the time is coming soon,” says the LORD,
“when I will send men to pour him from his jar.
They will pour him out,
then shatter the jar!

Тому то ось дні настаю́ть, — говорить Госпо́дь, — і пошлю́ Я на нього розли́вачів, — і його розіллю́ть, і по́суд його опоро́жнять, і дзбанки́ його порозбива́ють!

13

At last Moab will be ashamed of his idol Chemosh,
as the people of Israel were ashamed of their gold calf at Bethel.e

І за Кемоша Моав посоро́млений буде, як Ізраїлів дім посоро́млений був за Бет-Ел, за місце надії своєї.

14

“You used to boast, ‘We are heroes,
mighty men of war.’

14

Як говорите ви: „Ми хоробрі та сильні до бо́ю?“

15

But now Moab and his towns will be destroyed.
His most promising youth are doomed to slaughter,”
says the King, whose name is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.

15

Попусто́шений буде Моав, і до міст його ворог піді́йметься, — і пі́дуть добі́рні його юнаки́ на зарі́з, каже Цар, що Господь Саваот Йому Йме́ння.

16

“Destruction is coming fast for Moab;
calamity threatens ominously.

16

Близький по́хід нещастя Моава, а лихо його дуже ква́питься.

17

You friends of Moab,
weep for him and cry!
See how the strong scepter is broken,
how the beautiful staff is shattered!

Співчувайте йому, всі довкі́лля його, і всі, хто ім'я́ його знає, скажіть: „Як зламалося сильне це бе́рло, ця па́лиця пи́шна!“

18

“Come down from your glory
and sit in the dust, you people of Dibon,
for those who destroy Moab will shatter Dibon, too.
They will tear down all your towers.

Спустися зо слави своєї, і всядься в пустині, о ме́шканко, до́чко Дівону, бо спусто́шник Моава до тебе прийшов, і понищив тверди́ні твої!

19

You people of Aroer,
stand beside the road and watch.
Shout to those who flee from Moab,
‘What has happened there?’

Стань на дорозі й чекай, ме́шканко Ароеру, питай втікача та врятовану, кажи: „Що́ це сталося?“

20

“And the reply comes back,
‘Moab lies in ruins, disgraced;
weep and wail!
Tell it by the banks of the Arnon River:
Moab has been destroyed!’

Моав посоромлений, бо розтро́щений він, ридайте та плачте, і звістіте в Арноні, що Моав попусто́шений!

21

Judgment has been poured out on the towns of the plateau —
on Holon and Jahazf and Mephaath,

21

І суд ось прийшов на рівни́нний цей край, на Холон й на Ягцу, і на Мефаат,

22

on Dibon and Nebo and Beth-diblathaim,

22

і на Дівон, і на Нево, і на Бет-Дівдатаїм,

23

on Kiriathaim and Beth-gamul and Beth-meon,

23

і на Кір'ятаїм, і на Бет-Ґамул, і на Бет-Меон,

24

on Kerioth and Bozrah —
all the towns of Moab, far and near.

24

і на Керіййот, і на Боцру, і на всі міста́ моавського кра́ю, далекі й близькі́.

25

“The strength of Moab has ended.
His arm has been broken,” says the LORD.

25

І відтятий Моавові ріг, і раме́но його розтро́щене, говорить Господь.

26

“Let him stagger and fall like a drunkard,
for he has rebelled against the LORD.
Moab will wallow in his own vomit,
ridiculed by all.

26

Упійте його, — бо пишавсь проти Господа він, — і він з плю́скотом упаде до блюво́ти своєї, — і станеться й він посміхо́виськом!

27

Did you not ridicule the people of Israel?
Were they caught in the company of thieves
that you should despise them as you do?

27

І чи ж для тебе Ізраїль не був посміхо́виськом цим? Хіба серед злоді́їв був зна́йдений він, що ти скільки гово́риш про нього, то все головою хитаєш?

28

“You people of Moab,
flee from your towns and live in the caves.
Hide like doves that nest
in the clefts of the rocks.

28

Покиньте міста́, й пробувайте на скелі, мешка́нці Моава, і будьте, немов та голубка, що над краєм безо́дні гнізди́ться!

29

We have all heard of the pride of Moab,
for his pride is very great.
We know of his lofty pride,
his arrogance, and his haughty heart.

29

Ми чули про гордість Моава, що чванли́вий він дуже, про надутість його і його гордува́ння, про бундю́чність його та пиху́ його серця.

30

I know about his insolence,”
says the LORD,
“but his boasts are empty —
as empty as his deeds.

30

Я знаю, — говорить Господь, — про зухва́льство його, і про його балачки́ безпідставні, — робили вони неслухня́не!

31

So now I wail for Moab;
yes, I will mourn for Moab.
My heart is broken for the men of Kir-hareseth.g

31

Ридаю тому над Моавом, і кричу за Моавом усім, зідхаю над лю́дьми Кір-Хересу.

32

“You people of Sibmah, rich in vineyards,
I will weep for you even more than I did for Jazer.
Your spreading vines once reached as far as the Dead Sea,h
but the destroyer has stripped you bare!
He has harvested your grapes and summer fruits.

Більш як за Язером Я плакав, Я плакатиму за тобою, винограднику Сівми! Галу́зки твої перейшли аж за море, досягли́ аж до моря Язера. Спусто́шник напав на осінній твій плід, і на винобра́ння твоє, —

33

Joy and gladness are gone from fruitful Moab.
The presses yield no wine.
No one treads the grapes with shouts of joy.
There is shouting, yes, but not of joy.

і за́брана буде поті́ха твоя та радість твоя з виноградника й з кра́ю Моава, і вино із чави́ла спиню́! Не буде топта́ти топта́ч, радісний крик при збира́нні не буде вже радісним криком збира́ння.

“Instead, their awful cries of terror can be heard from Heshbon clear across to Elealeh and Jahaz; from Zoar all the way to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. Even the waters of Nimrim are dried up now.

34

Від крику Хешбону аж до Ел'але, аж до Ягацу не́стися буде їхній голос, від Цоару аж до Горонаїму, до Еґлат-Шелішійї, бо й вода із Німріму пустинею стане.

35

“I will put an end to Moab,” says the LORD, “for the people offer sacrifices at the pagan shrines and burn incense to their false gods.

35

І ви́гублю Я із Моава, — говорить Господь, — того, хто для же́ртов вихо́дить на па́гірок, і бо́гові ка́дить своє́му.

36

My heart moans like a flute for Moab and Kir-hareseth, for all their wealth has disappeared.

36

Тому́ стогне серце Моє за Моавом, немов та сопі́лка, і стогне серце Моє, як сопілка, за лю́дьми Кір-Хересу, бо погинули ті, хто бага́тство набув!

37

The people shave their heads and beards in mourning. They slash their hands and put on clothes made of burlap.

37

Тому кожна голова — облисі́ла, і кожна борода — обстри́жена, на руках у всіх — порі́зи жало́би, і на сте́гнах — вере́та.

38

There is crying and sorrow in every Moabite home and on every street. For I have smashed Moab like an old, unwanted jar.

38

На всіх даха́х Моава й на площах його — самий ле́мент, бо розбив Я Моава, мов по́суд, якого не люблять, говорить Господь.

39

How it is shattered! Hear the wailing! See the shame of Moab! It has become an object of ridicule, an example of ruin to all its neighbors.”

39

„Як він розто́щений“ плачуть, „як гане́бно Моав утікав, і як він посоро́млений!“ І Моав став за по́сміх та по́страх для всього довкі́лля його!

40

This is what the LORD says:
“Look! The enemy swoops down like an eagle,
spreading his wings over Moab.

40

Бо так промовляє Господь: Ось він, як орел, прилети́ть, і кри́ла свої над Моавом розго́рне, —

41

Its cities will fall,
and its strongholds will be seized.
Even the mightiest warriors will be in anguish
like a woman in labor.

41

міста́ будуть взяті, й твердині захо́плені. І того дня стане серце лица́рства Моава, як серце жони-породі́ллі!

42

Moab will no longer be a nation,
for it has boasted against the LORD.

42

Із наро́дів Моав буде ви́гублений, бо пишавсь проти Господа він.

43

“Terror and traps and snares will be your lot,
O Moab,” says the LORD.

43

Страх, та безо́дня, та па́стка на тебе, мешка́нче Моава! говорить Господь.

44

“Those who flee in terror will fall into a trap,
and those who escape the trap will step into a snare.
I will see to it that you do not get away,
for the time of your judgment has come,”
says the LORD.

44

Хто від стра́ху втече, той в безо́дню впаде́, хто ж з безодні піді́йметься, той буде схо́плений в па́стку. Бо спрова́джу на нього, на то́го Моава, рік їхньої кари, говорить Господь.

45

“The people flee as far as Heshbon
but are unable to go on.
For a fire comes from Heshbon,
King Sihon’s ancient home,
to devour the entire land
with all its rebellious people.

45

Втікачі́ знеси́лені будуть ставати у тіні Хешбону, бо вийде огонь із Хешбону, а по́лум'я з-поміж Сиго́ну, і поїсть край воло́сся на скро́ні Моаву та череп синів галасли́вих.

46

“What sorrow awaits you, O people of Moab!
The people of the god Chemosh are destroyed!
Your sons and your daughters
have been taken away as captives.

46

Горе, Моаве, тобі! Загинув Кемошів наро́д, бо сини твої взяті в поло́н, твої ж до́чки — в неволю!

47

But I will restore the fortunes of Moab
in days to come.
I, the LORD, have spoken!”
This is the end of Jeremiah’s prophecy concerning Moab.

І верну́ Я Моавові долю напри́кінці днів, говорить Госпо́дь. Аж досі — суд на Моава.
