The Justice of a Righteous God
Then another message came to me from the LORD:
Then another message came to me from the LORD:
І було́ мені слово Господнє таке:
“Why do you quote this proverb concerning the land of Israel: ‘The parents have eaten sour grapes, but their children’s mouths pucker at the taste’?
„Що́ це вам, що ви складаєте припові́стку на Ізраїлеву землю, говорячи: „Батьки їли неспіле, а оско́ма в синів на зуба́х!“
As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, you will not quote this proverb anymore in Israel.
Як живий Я, — говорить Господь Бог, — не бу́дете вже складати тієї припові́стки в Ізраїлі!
For all people are mine to judge — both parents and children alike. And this is my rule: The person who sins is the one who will die.
Тож усі душі Мої: як душа ба́тькова, так і душа синова — Мої вони! Душа, що грішить, — вона помре.
“Suppose a certain man is righteous and does what is just and right.
А чоловік, коли він справедливий, і робить право та справедливість,
на гора́х жертве́нного не їсть, і очей своїх не зводить до божкі́в Ізраїлевого дому, і жі́нки свого ближнього не занечищує, а до жінки в ча́сі її нечистоти́ не набли́жується,
He is a merciful creditor, not keeping the items given as security by poor debtors. He does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy.
і ніко́го не тисне, боржникові заста́ву його конче зверта́є, грабу́нку не чинить, хліб свій дає голодному, а голого покриває одежею,
He grants loans without interest, stays away from injustice, is honest and fair when judging others,
на ли́хву не дає, а відсотків не бере, від кривди відверта́є руку свою, чинить правдивий суд поміж чоловіком та чоловіком,
and faithfully obeys my decrees and regulations. Anyone who does these things is just and will surely live, says the Sovereign LORD.
уста́вами Моїми ходить, а прав Моїх дотримує, щоб чинити правду, — справедливий такий конче буде жити, говорить Господь Бог!
“But suppose that man has a son who grows up to be a robber or murderer and refuses to do what is right.
А як поро́дить він сина наси́льника, що кров проливає, і робить хоч тільки одне з того,
And that son does all the evil things his father would never do — he worships idols on the mountains, commits adultery,
чого він усього того не робив, а також на гора́х жертве́нне їв, і жінку свого ближнього занечи́щував,
oppresses the poor and helpless, steals from debtors by refusing to let them redeem their security, worships idols, commits detestable sins,
убогого й бідаря́ утискав, грабу́нки чинив, застави боржнико́ві не зверта́в, і до божкі́в зво́див свої очі, гидо́ту робив,
and lends money at excessive interest. Should such a sinful person live? No! He must die and must take full blame.
на ли́хву давав, і відсо́ток брав, — то чи буде він жити? Не буде він жити! Він усі ті гидо́ти чинив, — він мусить конче померти, кров його буде на ньо́му!
“But suppose that sinful son, in turn, has a son who sees his father’s wickedness and decides against that kind of life.
А ось породив він сина, і той побачив усі гріхи свого батька, які той робив, і хоч бачив, та не робив, як той:
This son refuses to worship idols on the mountains and does not commit adultery.
на гора́х жертве́нного не їв, і очей своїх до божкі́в Ізраїлевого дому не зво́див, жінки свого ближнього не занечи́щував,
He does not exploit the poor, but instead is fair to debtors and does not rob them. He gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy.
і ніко́го не утискав, заста́ви у за́став не брав, і грабунку не чинив, хліб свій голодному давав, а голого одежею покривав,
від кривди свою руку відверта́в, ли́хви та відсо́тків не брав, права́ Мої чинив, уста́вами Моїми ходив, — такий не помре за провину свого батька, — він конче буде жити!
But the father will die for his many sins — for being cruel, robbing people, and doing what was clearly wrong among his people.
Батько ж його, за те, що у́тиском тиснув, грабу́нком грабував брата, і що недобре чинив серед наро́ду свого, то ось він помре за провину свою!
“‘What?’ you ask. ‘Doesn’t the child pay for the parent’s sins?’ No! For if the child does what is just and right and keeps my decrees, that child will surely live.
А скажете ви: „Чому́ той син не поніс провину за батька?“ Але ж син той чинив право та справедливість, дотримував усі устави Мої й виконував їх, — він конче буде жити!
The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent’s sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child’s sins. Righteous people will be rewarded for their own righteous behavior, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness.
Та душа, що грішить, вона помре. Син не понесе кари за ба́тькову провину, а ба́тько не понесе за провину си́нову, — справедливість справедливого буде на ньому, а несправедливість несправедливого на тому буде.
But if wicked people turn away from all their sins and begin to obey my decrees and do what is just and right, they will surely live and not die.
А коли б несправедливий відвернувся від усіх гріхів своїх, яких нароби́в, і вико́нував усі устави Мої, і робив право та справедли́вість, — буде конче він жити, не помре!
All their past sins will be forgotten, and they will live because of the righteous things they have done.
Усі його гріхи́, які наробив він, не згадаються йому, — він буде жити в своїй справедливості, яку чинив!
“Do you think that I like to see wicked people die? says the Sovereign LORD. Of course not! I want them to turn from their wicked ways and live.
Чи Я маю вподо́бання в смерті несправедливого? — говорить Господь Бог, — чи ж не в тому, щоб він повернувся з доріг своїх та й жив?
However, if righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things and act like other sinners, should they be allowed to live? No, of course not! All their righteous acts will be forgotten, and they will die for their sins.
А коли б справедливий відвернувся від своєї справедливости й став робити кривду, — усі ті гидо́ти, які робить несправедливий, то чи такий буде жити? Усі справедливості його, які він робив, не згадаються, — за своє спроневі́рення, що він спроневі́рив, і за гріх свій, що згрішив, за них він помре!
“Yet you say, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right!’ Listen to me, O people of Israel. Am I the one not doing what’s right, or is it you?
А ви кажете: „Непра́ва Господня дорога!“ Послухайте но, доме Ізраїлів, чи ж дорога Моя неправа? Чи не ваші дороги неправі?
When righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things, they will die for it. Yes, they will die because of their sinful deeds.
Коли б справедливий відверну́вся від своєї справедливости й чинив кривду, і за те помер, то він помре за кривду свою, яку він чинив.
And if wicked people turn from their wickedness, obey the law, and do what is just and right, they will save their lives.
А коли б несправедливий відвернувся від своєї несправедливости, яку він чинив, і чинив би право та справедливість, він душу свою при житті збереже́.
They will live because they thought it over and decided to turn from their sins. Such people will not die.
І коли б він побачив, і відвернувся від усіх своїх гріхів, які він чинив, то конче буде він жити, не помре!
And yet the people of Israel keep saying, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right!’ O people of Israel, it is you who are not doing what’s right, not I.
А Ізраїлів дім каже: „Непра́ва Господня дорога!“ Чи ж Мої дороги неправі, доме Ізраїлів? Чи ж то не ваші дороги неправі?
“Therefore, I will judge each of you, O people of Israel, according to your actions, says the Sovereign LORD. Repent, and turn from your sins. Don’t let them destroy you!
Тому́ буду судити вас, доме Ізраїлів, кожного за дорогами його, говорить Господь Бог. Покайтеся, і відверні́ться від усіх ваших гріхів, і не буде вам провина на спотика́ння!
Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel?
Поскида́йте з себе всі ваші гріхи, якими ви грішили, і створіть собі нове́ серце та ново́го духа! І на́що маєте померти, Ізраїлів доме?
