New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • The voice said to me, “Son of man, eat what I am giving you — eat this scroll! Then go and give its message to the people of Israel.”
  • Ezekiel Eats the Scroll

And he said unto me, Son of man, eat what thou findest; eat this roll, and go, speak unto the house of Israel.
  • So I opened my mouth, and he fed me the scroll.
  • So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.
  • “Fill your stomach with this,” he said. And when I ate it, it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.
  • And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll which I give thee. And I ate, and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.
  • Then he said, “Son of man, go to the people of Israel and give them my messages.
  • And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them.
  • I am not sending you to a foreign people whose language you cannot understand.
  • For thou art not sent to a people of strange language, and of difficult speech, [but] to the house of Israel;
  • No, I am not sending you to people with strange and difficult speech. If I did, they would listen!
  • not to many peoples of strange language and of difficult speech, whose words thou canst not understand: had I sent thee to them, would they not hearken unto thee?
  • But the people of Israel won’t listen to you any more than they listen to me! For the whole lot of them are hard-hearted and stubborn.
  • But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee, for none of them will hearken unto me. For all the house of Israel are hard of forehead and stiff of heart.
  • But look, I have made you as obstinate and hard-hearted as they are.
  • Behold, I have made thy face hard against their faces, and thy forehead hard against their foreheads.
  • I have made your forehead as hard as the hardest rock! So don’t be afraid of them or fear their angry looks, even though they are rebels.”
  • As an adamant harder than flint have I made thy forehead. Fear them not, neither be dismayed at them, for they are a rebellious house.
  • Then he added, “Son of man, let all my words sink deep into your own heart first. Listen to them carefully for yourself.
  • And he said unto me, Son of man, all my words which I shall speak unto thee, receive in thy heart, and hear with thine ears;
  • Then go to your people in exile and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says!’ Do this whether they listen to you or not.”
  • and go, get thee to them of the captivity, unto the children of thy people, and speak unto them, and tell them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah, -- whether they will hear or whether they will forbear.
  • Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard a loud rumbling sound behind me. (May the glory of the LORD be praised in his place!)a
  • And the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me the sound of a great rushing, [saying,] Blessed be the glory of Jehovah from his place!
  • It was the sound of the wings of the living beings as they brushed against each other and the rumbling of their wheels beneath them.
  • And the sound of the wings of the living creatures that touched one another, And the sound of the wheels beside them, And the sound of a great rushing.
  • The Spirit lifted me up and took me away. I went in bitterness and turmoil, but the LORD’s hold on me was strong.
  • And the Spirit lifted me up, and took me away; and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit, and the hand of Jehovah was strong upon me.
  • Then I came to the colony of Judean exiles in Tel-abib, beside the Kebar River. I was overwhelmed and sat among them for seven days.
  • And I came to them of the captivity at Tel-abib, that dwelt by the river Chebar, and I sat where they sat; and I sat there astonied among them seven days.

  • A Watchman for Israel

After seven days the LORD gave me a message. He said,
  • A Watchman for Israel

And it came to pass at the end of seven days, that the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
  • “Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for Israel. Whenever you receive a message from me, warn people immediately.
  • Son of man, I have appointed thee a watchman unto the house of Israel, and thou shalt hear the word from my mouth, and give them warning from me.
  • If I warn the wicked, saying, ‘You are under the penalty of death,’ but you fail to deliver the warning, they will die in their sins. And I will hold you responsible for their deaths.
  • When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt certainly die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, that he may live: the same wicked [man] shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thy hand.
  • If you warn them and they refuse to repent and keep on sinning, they will die in their sins. But you will have saved yourself because you obeyed me.
  • But if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
  • “If righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and ignore the obstacles I put in their way, they will die. And if you do not warn them, they will die in their sins. None of their righteous acts will be remembered, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths.
  • And when a righteous [man] doth turn from his righteousness, and do what is wrong, and I lay a stumbling-block before him, he shall die; because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteous acts which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thy hand.
  • But if you warn righteous people not to sin and they listen to you and do not sin, they will live, and you will have saved yourself, too.”
  • And if thou warn the righteous [man], that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall certainly live, for he hath taken warning; and thou hast delivered thy soul.
  • Then the LORD took hold of me and said, “Get up and go out into the valley, and I will speak to you there.”
  • And the hand of Jehovah was there upon me; and he said unto me, Arise, go forth into the valley, and there I will talk with thee.
  • So I got up and went, and there I saw the glory of the LORD, just as I had seen in my first vision by the Kebar River. And I fell face down on the ground.
  • And I arose, and went forth into the valley, and behold, the glory of Jehovah stood there, like the glory which I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell on my face.
  • Then the Spirit came into me and set me on my feet. He spoke to me and said, “Go to your house and shut yourself in.
  • And the Spirit entered into me, and set me upon my feet; and he spoke with me, and said unto me, Go, shut thyself within thy house.
  • There, son of man, you will be tied with ropes so you cannot go out among the people.
  • And thou, son of man, behold, they shall put bands upon thee, and shall bind thee therewith, and thou shalt not go out among them.
  • And I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you will be speechless and unable to rebuke them, for they are rebels.
  • And I will make thy tongue cleave to the roof of thy mouth, that thou shalt be dumb, and shalt not be to them a reprover; for they are a rebellious house.
  • But when I give you a message, I will loosen your tongue and let you speak. Then you will say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says!’ Those who choose to listen will listen, but those who refuse will refuse, for they are rebels.
  • And when I speak with thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: He that heareth, let him hear; and he that forbeareth, let him forbear: for they are a rebellious house.
