Ceremonially Clean and Unclean Animals
Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
Clean and Unclean Animals
And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,
And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,
“Give the following instructions to the people of Israel.
“Of all the land animals, these are the ones you may use for food.
“Of all the land animals, these are the ones you may use for food.
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the animals which ye shall eat of all the beasts which are on the earth.
You may eat any animal that has completely split hooves and chews the cud.
Whatever hath cloven hoofs, and feet quite split open, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts -- that shall ye eat.
Only these shall ye not eat of those that chew the cud, or of those with cloven hoofs: the camel, for it cheweth the cud, but hath not cloven hoofs -- it shall be unclean unto you;
and the rock-badger, for it cheweth the cud, but hath not cloven hoofs -- it shall be unclean unto you;
The hare chews the cud but does not have split hooves, so it is unclean.
and the hare, for it cheweth the cud, but hath not cloven hoofs -- it shall be unclean unto you;
The pig has evenly split hooves but does not chew the cud, so it is unclean.
and the swine, for it hath cloven hoofs, and feet quite split open, but it cheweth not the cud -- it shall be unclean unto you.
You may not eat the meat of these animals or even touch their carcasses. They are ceremonially unclean for you.
Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch: they shall be unclean unto you.
“Of all the marine animals, these are ones you may use for food. You may eat anything from the water if it has both fins and scales, whether taken from salt water or from streams.
These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatever hath fins and scales in waters, in seas and in rivers, these shall ye eat;
But you must never eat animals from the sea or from rivers that do not have both fins and scales. They are detestable to you. This applies both to little creatures that live in shallow water and to all creatures that live in deep water.
but all that have not fins and scales in seas and in rivers, of all that swarm in the waters, and of every living soul which is in the waters -- they shall be an abomination unto you.
They will always be detestable to you. You must never eat their meat or even touch their dead bodies.
They shall be even an abomination unto you: of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase ye shall have in abomination.
Any marine animal that does not have both fins and scales is detestable to you.
Whatever in the waters hath no fins and scales, that shall be an abomination unto you.
“These are the birds that are detestable to you. You must never eat them: the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
And these shall ye have in abomination of the fowls; they shall not be eaten; an abomination shall they be: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the sea-eagle,
the eagle owl, the short-eared owl, the seagull, hawks of all kinds,
and the female ostrich and the male ostrich, and the sea-gull, and the hawk, after its kind;
the barn owl, the desert owl, the Egyptian vulture,
and the swan, and the pelican, and the carrion vulture,
the stork, herons of all kinds, the hoopoe, and the bat.
and the stork; the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.
“You must not eat winged insects that walk along the ground; they are detestable to you.
Every winged crawling thing that goeth upon all four shall be an abomination unto you.
You may, however, eat winged insects that walk along the ground and have jointed legs so they can jump.
Yet these shall ye eat of every winged crawling thing that goeth upon all four: those which have legs above their feet with which to leap upon the earth.
The insects you are permitted to eat include all kinds of locusts, bald locusts, crickets, and grasshoppers.
These shall ye eat of them: the arbeh after its kind, and the solam after its kind, and the hargol after its kind, and the hargab after its kind.
All other winged insects that walk along the ground are detestable to you.
But every winged crawling thing that hath four feet shall be an abomination unto you.
“The following creatures will make you ceremonially unclean. If any of you touch their carcasses, you will be defiled until evening.
And by these ye shall make yourselves unclean; whoever toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even.
If you pick up their carcasses, you must wash your clothes, and you will remain defiled until evening.
And whoever carrieth [ought] of their carcase shall wash his garments, and be unclean until the even.
“Any animal that has split hooves that are not evenly divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you. If you touch the carcass of such an animal, you will be defiled.
Every beast that hath cloven hoofs, but not feet quite split open, nor cheweth the cud, shall be unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.
Of the animals that walk on all fours, those that have paws are unclean. If you touch the carcass of such an animal, you will be defiled until evening.
And whatever goeth on its paws, among all manner of beasts that go upon all four, those are unclean unto you: whoever toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even.
If you pick up its carcass, you must wash your clothes, and you will remain defiled until evening. These animals are unclean for you.
And he that carrieth their carcase shall wash his garments, and be unclean until the even: they shall be unclean unto you.
“Of the small animals that scurry along the ground, these are unclean for you: the mole rat, the rat, large lizards of all kinds,
And these shall be unclean unto you among the crawling things which crawl on the earth: the mole, and the field-mouse, and the lizard, after its kind;
the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon.
and the groaning lizard, and the great red lizard, and the climbing lizard, and the chomet, and the chameleon.
All these small animals are unclean for you. If any of you touch the dead body of such an animal, you will be defiled until evening.
These shall be unclean unto you among all that crawl: whoever toucheth them when they are dead, shall be unclean until the even.
If such an animal dies and falls on something, that object will be unclean. This is true whether the object is made of wood, cloth, leather, or burlap. Whatever its use, you must dip it in water, and it will remain defiled until evening. After that, it will be ceremonially clean and may be used again.
And on whatever any of them when they are dead doth fall, it shall be unclean; all vessels of wood, or garment, or skin, or sack, every vessel wherewith work is done -- it shall be put into water, and be unclean until the even; then shall it be clean.
“If such an animal falls into a clay pot, everything in the pot will be defiled, and the pot must be smashed.
And every earthen vessel into which [any] of them falleth -- whatever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it.
If the water from such a container spills on any food, the food will be defiled. And any beverage in such a container will be defiled.
All food that is eaten on which [such] water hath come shall be unclean; and all drink that is drunk shall be unclean, in every [such] vessel.
Any object on which the carcass of such an animal falls will be defiled. If it is an oven or hearth, it must be destroyed, for it is defiled, and you must treat it accordingly.
And everything where upon [any part] of their carcase falleth shall be unclean; oven and hearth shall be broken down: they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you.
“However, if the carcass of such an animal falls into a spring or a cistern, the water will still be clean. But anyone who touches the carcass will be defiled.
Nevertheless, a spring or a well, a quantity of water, shall be clean. But he that toucheth their carcase shall be unclean.
If the carcass falls on seed grain to be planted in the field, the seed will still be considered clean.
And if any part of their carcase fall upon any sowing-seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean;
But if the seed is wet when the carcass falls on it, the seed will be defiled.
but if water have been put on the seed, and any part of their carcase fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you.
“If an animal you are permitted to eat dies and you touch its carcass, you will be defiled until evening.
And if any beast which is to you for food die, he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even.
If you eat any of its meat or carry away its carcass, you must wash your clothes, and you will remain defiled until evening.
And he that eateth of its carcase shall wash his garments, and be unclean until the even: he also that carrieth its carcase shall wash his garments, and be unclean until the even.
“All small animals that scurry along the ground are detestable, and you must never eat them.
And every crawling thing which crawleth on the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.
This includes all animals that slither along on their bellies, as well as those with four legs and those with many feet. All such animals that scurry along the ground are detestable, and you must never eat them.
Whatever goeth on the belly, and whatever goeth on all four, and all that have a great many feet, of every manner of crawling thing which crawleth on the earth -- these ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.
Do not defile yourselves by touching them. You must not make yourselves ceremonially unclean because of them.
Ye shall not make yourselves abominable through any crawling thing which crawleth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.
For I am the LORD your God. You must consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. So do not defile yourselves with any of these small animals that scurry along the ground.
For I am Jehovah your God; and ye shall hallow yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy; and ye shall not make yourselves unclean through any manner of crawling thing which creepeth on the earth.
For I, the LORD, am the one who brought you up from the land of Egypt, that I might be your God. Therefore, you must be holy because I am holy.
For I am Jehovah who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
“These are the instructions regarding land animals, birds, marine creatures, and animals that scurry along the ground.
This is the law of cattle, and of fowl, and of every living soul that moveth in the waters, and of every soul that crawleth on the earth;
