The LORD also said to Moses,
  • Moral and Ceremonial Laws

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.
  • “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.
  • “Each of you must show great respect for your mother and father, and you must always observe my Sabbath days of rest. I am the LORD your God.
  • ‘Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and keep My Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.
  • “Do not put your trust in idols or make metal images of gods for yourselves. I am the LORD your God.
  • ‘Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves [a]molded gods: I am the Lord your God.
  • “When you sacrifice a peace offering to the LORD, offer it properly so youa will be accepted by God.
  • ‘And if you offer a sacrifice of a peace offering to the Lord, you shall offer it of your own free will.
  • The sacrifice must be eaten on the same day you offer it or on the next day. Whatever is left over until the third day must be completely burned up.
  • It shall be eaten the same day you offer it, and on the next day. And if any remains until the third day, it shall be burned in the fire.
  • If any of the sacrifice is eaten on the third day, it will be contaminated, and I will not accept it.
  • And if it is eaten at all on the third day, it is an abomination. It shall not be accepted.
  • Anyone who eats it on the third day will be punished for defiling what is holy to the LORD and will be cut off from the community.
  • Therefore everyone who eats it shall bear his iniquity, because he has profaned the hallowed offering of the Lord; and that person shall be cut off from his people.
  • “When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop.
  • ‘When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest.
  • It is the same with your grape crop — do not strip every last bunch of grapes from the vines, and do not pick up the grapes that fall to the ground. Leave them for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the LORD your God.
  • And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the Lord your God.
  • “Do not steal.
“Do not deceive or cheat one another.
  • ‘You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another.
  • “Do not bring shame on the name of your God by using it to swear falsely. I am the LORD.
  • And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
  • “Do not defraud or rob your neighbor.
“Do not make your hired workers wait until the next day to receive their pay.
  • ‘You shall not cheat your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not remain with you all night until morning.
  • “Do not insult the deaf or cause the blind to stumble. You must fear your God; I am the LORD.
  • You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind, but shall fear your God: I am the Lord.
  • “Do not twist justice in legal matters by favoring the poor or being partial to the rich and powerful. Always judge people fairly.
  • ‘You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor.
  • “Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people.b
“Do not stand idly by when your neighbor’s life is threatened. I am the LORD.
  • You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the Lord.
  • “Do not nurse hatred in your heart for any of your relatives.c Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin.
  • ‘You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely [b]rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.
  • “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.
  • You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
  • “You must obey all my decrees.
“Do not mate two different kinds of animals. Do not plant your field with two different kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven from two different kinds of thread.
  • ‘You shall keep My statutes. You shall not let your livestock breed with another kind. You shall not sow your field with mixed seed. Nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool come upon you.
  • “If a man has sex with a slave girl whose freedom has never been purchased but who is committed to become another man’s wife, he must pay full compensation to her master. But since she is not a free woman, neither the man nor the woman will be put to death.
  • ‘Whoever lies carnally with a woman who is betrothed to a man as a concubine, and who has not at all been redeemed nor given her freedom, for this there shall be [c]scourging; but they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.
  • The man, however, must bring a ram as a guilt offering and present it to the LORD at the entrance of the Tabernacle.d
  • And he shall bring his trespass offering to the Lord, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, a ram as a trespass offering.
  • The priest will then purify hime before the LORD with the ram of the guilt offering, and the man’s sin will be forgiven.
  • The priest shall make [d]atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the Lord for his sin which he has committed. And the sin which he has committed shall be forgiven him.
  • “When you enter the land and plant fruit trees, leave the fruit unharvested for the first three years and consider it forbidden.f Do not eat it.
  • ‘When you come into the land, and have planted all kinds of trees for food, then you shall count their fruit as [e]uncircumcised. Three years it shall be as uncircumcised to you. It shall not be eaten.
  • In the fourth year the entire crop must be consecrated to the LORD as a celebration of praise.
  • But in the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy, a praise to the Lord.
  • Finally, in the fifth year you may eat the fruit. If you follow this pattern, your harvest will increase. I am the LORD your God.
  • And in the fifth year you may eat its fruit, that it may yield to you its increase: I am the Lord your God.
  • “Do not eat meat that has not been drained of its blood.
“Do not practice fortune-telling or witchcraft.
  • ‘You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying.
  • “Do not trim off the hair on your temples or trim your beards.
  • You shall not shave around the sides of your head, nor shall you disfigure the edges of your beard.
  • “Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the LORD.
  • You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord.
