Darby Bible Translation

  • The Appointed Festivals

    The LORD said to Moses,
  • Feasts of the Lord

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. These are the LORD’s appointed festivals, which you are to proclaim as official days for holy assembly.
  • Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, [Concerning] the set feasts of Jehovah, which ye shall proclaim as holy convocations -- these are my set feasts.
  • “You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of complete rest, an official day for holy assembly. It is the LORD’s Sabbath day, and it must be observed wherever you live.
  • Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, a holy convocation; no manner of work shall ye do: it is the sabbath to Jehovah in all your dwellings.
  • “In addition to the Sabbath, these are the LORD’s appointed festivals, the official days for holy assembly that are to be celebrated at their proper times each year.
  • The Passover Feast

These are the set feasts of Jehovah, holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons:

  • Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread

“The LORD’s Passover begins at sundown on the fourteenth day of the first month.a
  • In the first month, on the fourteenth of the month, between the two evenings, is the passover to Jehovah.
  • On the next day, the fifteenth day of the month, you must begin celebrating the Festival of Unleavened Bread. This festival to the LORD continues for seven days, and during that time the bread you eat must be made without yeast.
  • And on the fifteenth day of this month is the feast of unleavened bread to Jehovah; seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread.
  • On the first day of the festival, all the people must stop their ordinary work and observe an official day for holy assembly.
  • On the first day ye shall have a holy convocation: no manner of servile work shall ye do.
  • For seven days you must present special gifts to the LORD. On the seventh day the people must again stop all their ordinary work to observe an official day for holy assembly.”
  • And ye shall present to Jehovah an offering by fire seven days; on the seventh day is a holy convocation: no manner of servile work shall ye do.

  • Celebration of First Harvest

Then the LORD said to Moses,
  • The Feast of Firstfruits

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. When you enter the land I am giving you and you harvest its first crops, bring the priest a bundle of grain from the first cutting of your grain harvest.
  • Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them, When ye come into the land that I give unto you, and ye reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the first-fruits of your harvest unto the priest.
  • On the day after the Sabbath, the priest will lift it up before the LORD so it may be accepted on your behalf.
  • And he shall wave the sheaf before Jehovah, to be accepted for you; on the next day after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.
  • On that same day you must sacrifice a one-year-old male lamb with no defects as a burnt offering to the LORD.
  • And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf, a he-lamb without blemish, a yearling, for a burnt-offering to Jehovah;
  • With it you must present a grain offering consisting of four quartsb of choice flour moistened with olive oil. It will be a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the LORD. You must also offer one quartc of wine as a liquid offering.
  • and the oblation thereof: two tenths of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering by fire to Jehovah for a sweet odour; and the drink-offering thereof, of wine, a fourth part of a hin.
  • Do not eat any bread or roasted grain or fresh kernels on that day until you bring this offering to your God. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation wherever you live.
  • And ye shall not eat bread, or roast corn, or green ears, until the same day that ye have brought the offering of your God: [it is] an everlasting statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

  • The Festival of Harvest

“From the day after the Sabbath — the day you bring the bundle of grain to be lifted up as a special offering — count off seven full weeks.
  • The Feast of Pentecost

    And ye shall count from the morning after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave-offering, seven weeks; they shall be complete;
  • Keep counting until the day after the seventh Sabbath, fifty days later. Then present an offering of new grain to the LORD.
  • even unto the morning after the seventh sabbath shall ye count fifty days; and ye shall present a new oblation to Jehovah.
  • From wherever you live, bring two loaves of bread to be lifted up before the LORD as a special offering. Make these loaves from four quarts of choice flour, and bake them with yeast. They will be an offering to the LORD from the first of your crops.
  • Out of your dwellings shall ye bring two wave-loaves, of two tenths of fine flour; with leaven shall they be baken; [as] first-fruits to Jehovah.
  • Along with the bread, present seven one-year-old male lambs with no defects, one young bull, and two rams as burnt offerings to the LORD. These burnt offerings, together with the grain offerings and liquid offerings, will be a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the LORD.
  • And ye shall present with the bread seven he-lambs without blemish, yearlings, and one young bullock, and two rams: they shall be a burnt-offering to Jehovah with their oblation, and their drink-offerings, an offering by fire of a sweet odour to Jehovah.
  • Then you must offer one male goat as a sin offering and two one-year-old male lambs as a peace offering.
  • And ye shall sacrifice one buck of the goats for a sin-offering, and two he-lambs, yearlings, for a sacrifice of peace-offering.
  • “The priest will lift up the two lambs as a special offering to the LORD, together with the loaves representing the first of your crops. These offerings, which are holy to the LORD, belong to the priests.
  • And the priest shall wave them with the bread of the first-fruits as a wave-offering before Jehovah, with the two he-lambs; they shall be holy to Jehovah, for the priest.
  • That same day will be proclaimed an official day for holy assembly, a day on which you do no ordinary work. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation wherever you live.d
  • And ye shall make proclamation on that same day -- a holy convocation shall it be unto you: no manner of servile work shall ye do: [it is] an everlasting statute in all your dwellings throughout your generations.
  • “When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. Leave it for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the LORD your God.”
  • And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not in thy harvest entirely reap the corners of thy field, and the gleaning of thy harvest shalt thou not gather: thou shalt leave them unto the poor and to the stranger: I am Jehovah your God.

  • The Festival of Trumpets

    The LORD said to Moses,
  • The Feast of Trumpets

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. On the first day of the appointed month in early autumn,e you are to observe a day of complete rest. It will be an official day for holy assembly, a day commemorated with loud blasts of a trumpet.
  • Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, on the first of the month, shall ye have a rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.
  • You must do no ordinary work on that day. Instead, you are to present special gifts to the LORD.”
  • No manner of servile work shall ye do; and ye shall present an offering by fire to Jehovah.

  • The Day of Atonement

Then the LORD said to Moses,
  • The Day of Atonement

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Be careful to celebrate the Day of Atonement on the tenth day of that same month — nine days after the Festival of Trumpets.f You must observe it as an official day for holy assembly, a day to deny yourselvesg and present special gifts to the LORD.
  • Also on the tenth of this seventh month is the day of the atonement: a holy convocation shall it be unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and present an offering by fire to Jehovah.
  • Do no work during that entire day because it is the Day of Atonement, when offerings of purification are made for you, making you right withh the LORD your God.
  • And ye shall do no manner of work on that same day; for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement for you before Jehovah your God.
  • All who do not deny themselves that day will be cut off from God’s people.
  • For every soul that is not afflicted on that same day, shall be cut off from among his peoples.
  • And I will destroy anyone among you who does any work on that day.
  • And every soul that doeth any manner of work on that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.
  • You must not do any work at all! This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation wherever you live.
  • No manner of work shall ye do: [it is] an everlasting statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
  • This will be a Sabbath day of complete rest for you, and on that day you must deny yourselves. This day of rest will begin at sundown on the ninth day of the month and extend until sundown on the tenth day.”
  • A sabbath of rest shall it be unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls. On the ninth of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.

  • The Festival of Shelters

And the LORD said to Moses,
  • The Feast of Booths

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. Begin celebrating the Festival of Sheltersi on the fifteenth day of the appointed month — five days after the Day of Atonement.j This festival to the LORD will last for seven days.
  • Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the feast of booths seven days to Jehovah.
  • On the first day of the festival you must proclaim an official day for holy assembly, when you do no ordinary work.
  • On the first day there shall be a holy convocation: no manner of servile work shall ye do.
  • For seven days you must present special gifts to the LORD. The eighth day is another holy day on which you present your special gifts to the LORD. This will be a solemn occasion, and no ordinary work may be done that day.
  • Seven days ye shall present an offering by fire to Jehovah; on the eighth day shall be a holy convocation unto you; and ye shall present an offering by fire to Jehovah: it is a solemn assembly; no manner of servile work shall ye do.
  • (“These are the LORD’s appointed festivals. Celebrate them each year as official days for holy assembly by presenting special gifts to the LORD — burnt offerings, grain offerings, sacrifices, and liquid offerings — each on its proper day.
  • These are the set feasts of Jehovah, which ye shall proclaim as holy convocations, to present an offering by fire to Jehovah, a burnt-offering, and an oblation, a sacrifice, and drink-offerings, everything upon its day;
  • These festivals must be observed in addition to the LORD’s regular Sabbath days, and the offerings are in addition to your personal gifts, the offerings you give to fulfill your vows, and the voluntary offerings you present to the LORD.)
  • besides the sabbaths of Jehovah, and besides your gifts, and besides all your vows, and besides all your voluntary offerings, which ye give to Jehovah.
  • “Remember that this seven-day festival to the LORD — the Festival of Shelters — begins on the fifteenth day of the appointed month,k after you have harvested all the produce of the land. The first day and the eighth day of the festival will be days of complete rest.
  • But on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the produce of the land, ye shall celebrate the feast of Jehovah seven days: on the first day there shall be rest, and on the eighth day there shall be rest.
  • On the first day gather branches from magnificent treesl — palm fronds, boughs from leafy trees, and willows that grow by the streams. Then celebrate with joy before the LORD your God for seven days.
  • And ye shall take on the first day the fruit of beautiful trees, palm branches and the boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before Jehovah your God seven days.
  • You must observe this festival to the LORD for seven days every year. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed in the appointed monthm from generation to generation.
  • And ye shall celebrate it as a feast to Jehovah seven days in the year: [it is] an everlasting statute throughout your generations; in the seventh month shall ye celebrate it.
  • For seven days you must live outside in little shelters. All native-born Israelites must live in shelters.
  • In booths shall ye dwell seven days; all born in Israel shall dwell in booths;
  • This will remind each new generation of Israelites that I made their ancestors live in shelters when I rescued them from the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.”
  • that your generations may know that I caused the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am Jehovah your God.
  • So Moses gave the Israelites these instructions regarding the annual festivals of the LORD.
  • And Moses declared the set feasts of Jehovah to the children of Israel.
