New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • This is what the LORD says:
“The people of Moab have sinned again and again,a
and I will not let them go unpunished!
They desecrated the bones of Edom’s king,
    burning them to ashes.
  • Judgment on Moab, Judah and Israel

Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not revoke its sentence; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime.
  • So I will send down fire on the land of Moab,
and all the fortresses in Kerioth will be destroyed.
The people will fall in the noise of battle,
as the warriors shout and the ram’s horn sounds.
  • And I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerijoth; and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, [and] with the sound of the trumpet.
  • And I will destroy their king
    and slaughter all their princes,”
    says the LORD.
  • And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith Jehovah.

  • God’s Judgment on Judah and Israel

This is what the LORD says:
“The people of Judah have sinned again and again,
and I will not let them go unpunished!
They have rejected the instruction of the LORD,
    refusing to obey his decrees.
They have been led astray by the same lies
    that deceived their ancestors.
  • Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not revoke its sentence; because they have despised the law of Jehovah, and have not kept his statutes; and their lies have caused them to err, after which their fathers walked.
  • So I will send down fire on Judah,
and all the fortresses of Jerusalem will be destroyed.”
  • And I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
  • This is what the LORD says:
“The people of Israel have sinned again and again,
and I will not let them go unpunished!
They sell honorable people for silver
and poor people for a pair of sandals.
  • Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke its sentence; because they have sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes;
  • They trample helpless people in the dust
and shove the oppressed out of the way.
Both father and son sleep with the same woman,
    corrupting my holy name.
  • panting after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turning aside the way of the meek; and a man and his father will go in unto the [same] maid, to profane my holy name.
  • At their religious festivals,
they lounge in clothing their debtors put up as security.
In the house of their gods,b
they drink wine bought with unjust fines.
  • And they lay [themselves] down by every altar upon clothes taken in pledge, and they drink [in] the house of their God the wine of the condemned.
  • “But as my people watched,
    I destroyed the Amorites,
though they were as tall as cedars
    and as strong as oaks.
I destroyed the fruit on their branches
    and dug out their roots.
  • The Ingratitude of Israel

But I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was as the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; but I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
  • It was I who rescued you from Egypt
and led you through the desert for forty years,
so you could possess the land of the Amorites.
  • And I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
  • I chose some of your sons to be prophets
    and others to be Nazirites.
Can you deny this, my people of Israel?”
    asks the LORD.
  • And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, ye children of Israel? saith Jehovah.
  • “But you caused the Nazirites to sin by making them drink wine,
and you commanded the prophets, ‘Shut up!’
  • And ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.
  • “So I will make you groan
like a wagon loaded down with sheaves of grain.
  • Behold, I will press upon you, as a cart presseth that is full of sheaves.
  • Your fastest runners will not get away.
The strongest among you will become weak.
Even mighty warriors will be unable to save themselves.
  • And flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver his soul.
  • The archers will not stand their ground.
The swiftest runners won’t be fast enough to escape.
Even those riding horses won’t be able to save themselves.
  • Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and the swift of foot shall not escape, and he that rideth the horse shall not deliver his soul;
  • On that day the most courageous of your fighting men
will drop their weapons and run for their lives,”
    says the LORD.
  • and he that is stout-hearted among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith Jehovah.
