Darby Bible Translation

  • A Vision of Ripe Fruit

Then the Sovereign LORD showed me another vision. In it I saw a basket filled with ripe fruit.
  • The Basket of Ripe Fruit

Thus did Jehovah shew unto me; and behold, a basket of summer-fruit.
  • “What do you see, Amos?” he asked.
I replied, “A basket full of ripe fruit.”
Then the LORD said, “Like this fruit, Israel is ripe for punishment! I will not delay their punishment again.
  • And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer-fruit. And Jehovah said unto me, The end is come upon my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more.
  • In that day the singing in the temple will turn to wailing. Dead bodies will be scattered everywhere. They will be carried out of the city in silence. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!”
  • And the songs of the palace shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah. The dead bodies shall be many; in every place they shall be cast forth. Silence!
  • Listen to this, you who rob the poor
    and trample down the needy!
  • Hear this, ye that pant after the needy, even to cause to fail the poor of the land,
  • You can’t wait for the Sabbath day to be over
and the religious festivals to end
so you can get back to cheating the helpless.
You measure out grain with dishonest measures
and cheat the buyer with dishonest scales.a
  • saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat? making the ephah small and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances for deceit:
  • And you mix the grain you sell
with chaff swept from the floor.
    Then you enslave poor people
for one piece of silver or a pair of sandals.
  • that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; and that we may sell the refuse of the wheat.
  • Now the LORD has sworn this oath
by his own name, the Pride of Israelb:
    “I will never forget
the wicked things you have done!
  • Jehovah hath sworn by the glory of Jacob, Certainly I will never forget any of their works.
  • The earth will tremble for your deeds,
    and everyone will mourn.
    The ground will rise like the Nile River at floodtime;
it will heave up, then sink again.
  • Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? And it shall wholly rise up like the Nile; and it shall surge and sink down, as the river of Egypt.
  • “In that day,” says the Sovereign LORD,
“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth while it is still day.
  • And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the land in the clear day.
  • I will turn your celebrations into times of mourning
    and your singing into weeping.
    You will wear funeral clothes
and shave your heads to show your sorrow —
as if your only son had died.
How very bitter that day will be!
  • And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning for an only [son], and the end thereof as a bitter day.
  • “The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign LORD,
“when I will send a famine on the land —
not a famine of bread or water
but of hearing the words of the LORD.
  • Behold, days come, saith the Lord Jehovah, when I will send a famine in the land; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Jehovah.
  • People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from border to borderc
searching for the word of the LORD,
but they will not find it.
  • And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah, and shall not find it.
  • Beautiful girls and strong young men
will grow faint in that day,
    thirsting for the LORD’s word.
  • In that day shall the fair virgins and the young men faint for thirst;
  • And those who swear by the shameful idols of Samaria —
who take oaths in the name of the god of Dan
and make vows in the name of the god of Beershebad
    they will all fall down,
    never to rise again.”
  • they that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, [As] thy god, O Dan, liveth! and, [As] the way of Beer-sheba liveth! even they shall fall, and never rise up again.
