New Living Translation

New International Version

  • The LORD gave this message to Micah of Moresheth during the years when Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah. The visions he saw concerned both Samaria and Jerusalem.
    Grief over Samaria and Jerusalem
  • The word of the Lord that came to Micah of Moresheth during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah — the vision he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.
  • Attention! Let all the people of the world listen!
    Let the earth and everything in it hear.
    The Sovereign LORD is making accusations against you;
    the Lord speaks from his holy Temple.
  • Hear, you peoples, all of you,
    listen, earth and all who live in it,
    that the Sovereign Lord may bear witness against you,
    the Lord from his holy temple.
  • Look! The LORD is coming!
    He leaves his throne in heaven
    and tramples the heights of the earth.
  • Judgment Against Samaria and Jerusalem

    Look! The Lord is coming from his dwelling place;
    he comes down and treads on the heights of the earth.
  • The mountains melt beneath his feet
    and flow into the valleys
    like wax in a fire,
    like water pouring down a hill.
  • The mountains melt beneath him
    and the valleys split apart,
    like wax before the fire,
    like water rushing down a slope.
  • And why is this happening?
    Because of the rebellion of Israela
    yes, the sins of the whole nation.
    Who is to blame for Israel’s rebellion?
    Samaria, its capital city!
    Where is the center of idolatry in Judah?
    In Jerusalem, its capital!
  • All this is because of Jacob’s transgression,
    because of the sins of the people of Israel.
    What is Jacob’s transgression?
    Is it not Samaria?
    What is Judah’s high place?
    Is it not Jerusalem?
  • “So I, the LORD, will make the city of Samaria
    a heap of ruins.
    Her streets will be plowed up
    for planting vineyards.
    I will roll the stones of her walls into the valley below,
    exposing her foundations.
  • “Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble,
    a place for planting vineyards.
    I will pour her stones into the valley
    and lay bare her foundations.
  • All her carved images will be smashed.
    All her sacred treasures will be burned.
    These things were bought with the money
    earned by her prostitution,
    and they will now be carried away
    to pay prostitutes elsewhere.”
  • All her idols will be broken to pieces;
    all her temple gifts will be burned with fire;
    I will destroy all her images.
    Since she gathered her gifts from the wages of prostitutes,
    as the wages of prostitutes they will again be used.”
  • Therefore, I will mourn and lament.
    I will walk around barefoot and naked.
    I will howl like a jackal
    and moan like an owl.
  • Weeping and Mourning

    Because of this I will weep and wail;
    I will go about barefoot and naked.
    I will howl like a jackal
    and moan like an owl.
  • For my people’s wound
    is too deep to heal.
    It has reached into Judah,
    even to the gates of Jerusalem.
  • For Samaria’s plague is incurable;
    it has spread to Judah.
    It has reached the very gate of my people,
    even to Jerusalem itself.
  • Don’t tell our enemies in Gathb;
    don’t weep at all.
    You people in Beth-leaphrah,c
    roll in the dust to show your despair.
  • Tell it not in Gatha;
    weep not at all.
    In Beth Ophrahb
    roll in the dust.
  • You people in Shaphir,d
    go as captives into exile — naked and ashamed.
    The people of Zaanane
    dare not come outside their walls.
    The people of Beth-ezelf mourn,
    for their house has no support.
  • Pass by naked and in shame,
    you who live in Shaphir.c
    Those who live in Zaanand
    will not come out.
    Beth Ezel is in mourning;
    it no longer protects you.
  • The people of Marothg anxiously wait for relief,
    but only bitterness awaits them
    as the LORD’s judgment reaches
    even to the gates of Jerusalem.
  • Those who live in Marothe writhe in pain,
    waiting for relief,
    because disaster has come from the Lord,
    even to the gate of Jerusalem.
  • Harness your chariot horses and flee,
    you people of Lachish.h
    You were the first city in Judah
    to follow Israel in her rebellion,
    and you led Jerusalemi into sin.
  • You who live in Lachish,
    harness fast horses to the chariot.
    You are where the sin of Daughter Zion began,
    for the transgressions of Israel were found in you.
  • Send farewell gifts to Moresheth-gathj;
    there is no hope of saving it.
    The town of Aczibk
    has deceived the kings of Israel.
  • Therefore you will give parting gifts
    to Moresheth Gath.
    The town of Akzibf will prove deceptive
    to the kings of Israel.
  • O people of Mareshah,l
    I will bring a conqueror to capture your town.
    And the leadersm of Israel
    will go to Adullam.
  • I will bring a conqueror against you
    who live in Mareshah.g
    The nobles of Israel
    will flee to Adullam.
  • Oh, people of Judah, shave your heads in sorrow,
    for the children you love will be snatched away.
    Make yourselves as bald as a vulture,
    for your little ones will be exiled to distant lands.
  • Shave your head in mourning
    for the children in whom you delight;
    make yourself as bald as the vulture,
    for they will go from you into exile.
