New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • The Budding of Aaron’s Staff

aThen the LORD said to Moses,
  • Aaron's Staff Buds

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
  • “Tell the people of Israel to bring you twelve wooden staffs, one from each leader of Israel’s ancestral tribes, and inscribe each leader’s name on his staff.
  • Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers twelve rods: write thou every man's name upon his rod.
  • Inscribe Aaron’s name on the staff of the tribe of Levi, for there must be one staff for the leader of each ancestral tribe.
  • And thou shalt write Aaron's name upon the rod of Levi: for one rod shall be for the head of the house of their fathers.
  • Place these staffs in the Tabernacle in front of the Ark containing the tablets of the Covenant,b where I meet with you.
  • And thou shalt lay them up in the tabernacle of the congregation before the testimony, where I will meet with you.
  • Buds will sprout on the staff belonging to the man I choose. Then I will finally put an end to the people’s murmuring and complaining against you.”
  • And it shall come to pass, that the man's rod, whom I shall choose, shall blossom: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, whereby they murmur against you.
  • So Moses gave the instructions to the people of Israel, and each of the twelve tribal leaders, including Aaron, brought Moses a staff.
  • And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, and every one of their princes gave him a rod apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers' houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.
  • Moses placed the staffs in the LORD’s presence in the Tabernacle of the Covenant.c
  • And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tabernacle of witness.
  • When he went into the Tabernacle of the Covenant the next day, he found that Aaron’s staff, representing the tribe of Levi, had sprouted, budded, blossomed, and produced ripe almonds!
  • And it came to pass, that on the morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds.
  • When Moses brought all the staffs out from the LORD’s presence, he showed them to the people. Each man claimed his own staff.
  • And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.
  • And the LORD said to Moses: “Place Aaron’s staff permanently before the Ark of the Covenantd to serve as a warning to rebels. This should put an end to their complaints against me and prevent any further deaths.”
  • And the LORD said unto Moses, Bring Aaron's rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not.
  • So Moses did as the LORD commanded him.
  • And Moses did so: as the LORD commanded him, so did he.
  • Then the people of Israel said to Moses, “Look, we are doomed! We are dead! We are ruined!
  • And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish.
  • Everyone who even comes close to the Tabernacle of the LORD dies. Are we all doomed to die?”
  • Whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the LORD shall die: shall we be consumed with dying?
