Darby Bible Translation

  • Moses Strikes the Rock

In the first month of the year,a the whole community of Israel arrived in the wilderness of Zin and camped at Kadesh. While they were there, Miriam died and was buried.
  • The Death of Miriam

And the children of Israel, the whole assembly, came into the wilderness of Zin, in the first month; and the people abode at Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
  • There was no water for the people to drink at that place, so they rebelled against Moses and Aaron.
  • Water from the Rock

And there was no water for the assembly, and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
  • The people blamed Moses and said, “If only we had died in the LORD’s presence with our brothers!
  • And the people contended with Moses, and spoke, saying, Would that we had died when our brethren died before Jehovah!
  • Why have you brought the congregation of the LORD’s people into this wilderness to die, along with all our livestock?
  • And why have ye brought the congregation of Jehovah into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our beasts?
  • Why did you make us leave Egypt and bring us here to this terrible place? This land has no grain, no figs, no grapes, no pomegranates, and no water to drink!”
  • And why have ye made us to go up out of Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates, neither is there any water to drink.
  • Moses and Aaron turned away from the people and went to the entrance of the Tabernacle,b where they fell face down on the ground. Then the glorious presence of the LORD appeared to them,
  • And Moses and Aaron went from before the congregation to the entrance of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of Jehovah appeared to them.
  • and the LORD said to Moses,
  • And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “You and Aaron must take the staff and assemble the entire community. As the people watch, speak to the rock over there, and it will pour out its water. You will provide enough water from the rock to satisfy the whole community and their livestock.”
  • Take the staff, and gather the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, and it shall give its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock, and shalt give the assembly and their beasts drink.
  • So Moses did as he was told. He took the staff from the place where it was kept before the LORD.
  • And Moses took the staff from before Jehovah, as he had commanded him.
  • Then he and Aaron summoned the people to come and gather at the rock. “Listen, you rebels!” he shouted. “Must we bring you water from this rock?”
  • And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said to them, Hear now, ye rebels: shall we bring forth to you water out of this rock?
  • Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the staff, and water gushed out. So the entire community and their livestock drank their fill.
  • And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his staff smote the rock twice, and much water came out, and the assembly drank, and their beasts.
  • But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them!”
  • And Jehovah said to Moses and to Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to hallow me before the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land that I have given them.
  • This place was known as the waters of Meribah (which means “arguing”) because there the people of Israel argued with the LORD, and there he demonstrated his holiness among them.
  • These are the waters of Meribah, where the children of Israel contended with Jehovah, and he hallowed himself in them.

  • Edom Refuses Israel Passage

While Moses was at Kadesh, he sent ambassadors to the king of Edom with this message:
“This is what your relatives, the people of Israel, say: You know all the hardships we have been through.
  • Edom Refuses Passage

And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, Thus says thy brother Israel: Thou knowest all the trouble that hath befallen us,
  • Our ancestors went down to Egypt, and we lived there a long time, and we and our ancestors were brutally mistreated by the Egyptians.
  • how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians evil entreated us and our fathers;
  • But when we cried out to the LORD, he heard us and sent an angel who brought us out of Egypt. Now we are camped at Kadesh, a town on the border of your land.
  • and when we cried to Jehovah, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt; and behold, we are at Kadesh, a city at the extremity of thy border.
  • Please let us travel through your land. We will be careful not to go through your fields and vineyards. We won’t even drink water from your wells. We will stay on the king’s road and never leave it until we have passed through your territory.”
  • Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country; we will not pass through fields, or through vineyards, neither will we drink water out of the wells: we will go by the king's road; we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy border.
  • But the king of Edom said, “Stay out of my land, or I will meet you with an army!”
  • But Edom said to him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
  • The Israelites answered, “We will stay on the main road. If our livestock drink your water, we will pay for it. Just let us pass through your country. That’s all we ask.”
  • And the children of Israel said to him, We will go by the high way; and if we drink of thy water, I and my cattle, then I will pay for it: I will only, without anything else, go through on my feet.
  • But the king of Edom replied, “Stay out! You may not pass through our land.” With that he mobilized his army and marched out against them with an imposing force.
  • And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
  • Because Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through their country, Israel was forced to turn around.
  • Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory; and Israel turned away from him.

  • The Death of Aaron

The whole community of Israel left Kadesh and arrived at Mount Hor.
  • The Death of Aaron

And they removed from Kadesh; and the children of Israel, the whole assembly, came to mount Hor.
  • There, on the border of the land of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
  • And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron in mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, saying,
  • “The time has come for Aaron to join his ancestors in death. He will not enter the land I am giving the people of Israel, because the two of you rebelled against my instructions concerning the water at Meribah.
  • Aaron shall be gathered unto his peoples; for he shall not enter into the land that I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my commandment at the waters of Meribah.
  • Now take Aaron and his son Eleazar up Mount Hor.
  • Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor,
  • There you will remove Aaron’s priestly garments and put them on Eleazar, his son. Aaron will die there and join his ancestors.”
  • and strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron shall be gathered [to his peoples], and shall die there.
  • So Moses did as the LORD commanded. The three of them went up Mount Hor together as the whole community watched.
  • And Moses did as Jehovah had commanded, and they went up mount Hor before the eyes of the whole assembly.
  • At the summit, Moses removed the priestly garments from Aaron and put them on Eleazar, Aaron’s son. Then Aaron died there on top of the mountain, and Moses and Eleazar went back down.
  • And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there upon the top of the mountain; and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.
  • When the people realized that Aaron had died, all Israel mourned for him thirty days.
  • And the whole assembly saw that Aaron was dead, and they mourned for Aaron thirty days, [even] the whole house of Israel.
