New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • The Death of John the Baptist

When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee,a heard about Jesus,
  • The Beheading of John

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
  • he said to his advisers, “This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do such miracles.”
  • and said to his servants, This is John the baptist: *he* is risen from the dead, and because of this these works of power display their force in him.
  • For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias (the former wife of Herod’s brother Philip).
  • For Herod had seized John, and had bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother.
  • John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s law for you to marry her.”
  • For John said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
  • Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet.
  • And [while] desiring to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they held him for a prophet.
  • But at a birthday party for Herod, Herodias’s daughter performed a dance that greatly pleased him,
  • But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod;
  • so he promised with a vow to give her anything she wanted.
  • whereupon he promised with oath to give her whatsoever she should ask.
  • At her mother’s urging, the girl said, “I want the head of John the Baptist on a tray!”
  • But she, being set on by her mother, says, Give me here upon a dish the head of John the baptist.
  • Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders.
  • And the king was grieved; but on account of the oaths, and those lying at table with [him], he commanded [it] to be given.
  • So John was beheaded in the prison,
  • And he sent and beheaded John in the prison;
  • and his head was brought on a tray and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
  • and his head was brought upon a dish, and was given to the damsel, and she carried [it] to her mother.
  • Later, John’s disciples came for his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus what had happened.
  • And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and came and brought word to Jesus.

  • Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns.
  • The Feeding of the Five Thousand

And Jesus, having heard it, went away thence by ship to a desert place apart. And the crowds having heard [of it] followed him on foot from the cities.
  • Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
  • And going out he saw a great crowd, and was moved with compassion about them, and healed their infirm.
  • That evening the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.”
  • But when even was come, his disciples came to him saying, The place is desert, and [much of] the [day] time already gone by; dismiss the crowds, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.
  • But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary — you feed them.”
  • But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give *ye* them to eat.
  • “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered.
  • But they say to him, We have not here save five loaves and two fishes.
  • “Bring them here,” he said.
  • And he said, Bring them here to me.
  • Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people.
  • And having commanded the crowds to recline upon the grass, having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed: and having broken the loaves, he gave [them] to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the crowds.
  • They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers.
  • And all ate and were filled, and they took up what was over and above of fragments twelve hand-baskets full.
  • About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children!
  • But those that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

  • Jesus Walks on Water

Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home.
  • Jesus Walks on Water

And immediately he compelled the disciples to go on board ship, and to go on before him to the other side, until he should have dismissed the crowds.
  • After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.
  • And having dismissed the crowds, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. And when even was come, he was alone there,
  • Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves.
  • but the ship was already in the middle of the sea tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
  • About three o’clock in the morningb Jesus came toward them, walking on the water.
  • But in the fourth watch of the night he went off to them, walking on the sea.
  • When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”
  • And the disciples, seeing him walking on the sea, were troubled, saying, It is an apparition. And they cried out through fear.
  • But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!c
  • But Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, Take courage; it is *I*: be not afraid.
  • Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”
  • And Peter answering him said, Lord, if it be *thou*, command me to come to thee upon the waters.
  • “Yes, come,” Jesus said.
So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.
  • And he said, Come. And Peter, having descended from the ship, walked upon the waters to go to Jesus.
  • But when he saw the strongd wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.
  • But seeing the wind strong he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.
  • Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”
  • And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught hold of him, and says to him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?
  • When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.
  • And when they had gone up into the ship, the wind fell.
  • Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.
  • But those in the ship came and did homage to him, saying, Truly thou art God's Son.
  • After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret.
  • Jesus Heals at Gennesaret

And having crossed over they came to the land of Gennesaret.
  • When the people recognized Jesus, the news of his arrival spread quickly throughout the whole area, and soon people were bringing all their sick to be healed.
  • And when the men of that place recognised him, they sent to that whole country around, and they brought to him all that were ill,
  • They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.
  • and besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment; and as many as touched were made thoroughly well.
