New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • The Death of John the Baptist

When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee,a heard about Jesus,
  • John the Baptist Beheaded

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus
  • he said to his advisers, “This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do such miracles.”
  • and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”
  • For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias (the former wife of Herod’s brother Philip).
  • For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.
  • John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s law for you to marry her.”
  • Because John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
  • Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet.
  • And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
  • But at a birthday party for Herod, Herodias’s daughter performed a dance that greatly pleased him,
  • But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.
  • so he promised with a vow to give her anything she wanted.
  • Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
  • At her mother’s urging, the girl said, “I want the head of John the Baptist on a tray!”
  • So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.”
  • Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders.
  • And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her.
  • So John was beheaded in the prison,
  • So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.
  • and his head was brought on a tray and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
  • And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
  • Later, John’s disciples came for his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus what had happened.
  • Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

  • Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns.
  • Feeding the Five Thousand

When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities.
  • Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
  • And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.
  • That evening the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.”
  • When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”
  • But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary — you feed them.”
  • But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
  • “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered.
  • And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”
  • “Bring them here,” he said.
  • He said, “Bring them here to Me.”
  • Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people.
  • Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.
  • They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers.
  • So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.
  • About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children!
  • Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

  • Jesus Walks on Water

Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home.
  • Jesus Walks on the Sea

Immediately Jesus [a]made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.
  • After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.
  • And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.
  • Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves.
  • But the boat was now [b]in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
  • About three o’clock in the morningb Jesus came toward them, walking on the water.
  • Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
  • When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”
  • And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.
  • But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!c
  • But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, [c]“Be of good cheer! [d]It is I; do not be afraid.”
  • Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”
  • And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
  • “Yes, come,” Jesus said.
So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.
  • So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
  • But when he saw the strongd wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.
  • But when he saw [e]that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
  • Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”
  • And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
  • When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.
  • And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
  • Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.
  • Then those who were in the boat [f]came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”
  • After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret.
  • Many Touch Him and Are Made Well

When they had crossed over, they came [g]to the land of Gennesaret.
  • When the people recognized Jesus, the news of his arrival spread quickly throughout the whole area, and soon people were bringing all their sick to be healed.
  • And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick,
  • They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.
  • and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.
