New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids

    “Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten bridesmaidsa who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.
  • The Parable of the Ten Virgins

    Then shall the kingdom of the heavens be made like to ten virgins that having taken their torches, went forth to meet the bridegroom.
  • Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
  • And five of them were prudent and five foolish.
  • The five who were foolish didn’t take enough olive oil for their lamps,
  • They that were foolish took their torches and did not take oil with them;
  • but the other five were wise enough to take along extra oil.
  • but the prudent took oil in their vessels with their torches.
  • When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
  • Now the bridegroom tarrying, they all grew heavy and slept.
  • “At midnight they were roused by the shout, ‘Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!’
  • But in [the] middle of [the] night there was a cry, Behold, the bridegroom; go forth to meet him.
  • “All the bridesmaids got up and prepared their lamps.
  • Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their torches.
  • Then the five foolish ones asked the others, ‘Please give us some of your oil because our lamps are going out.’
  • And the foolish said to the prudent, Give us of your oil, for our torches are going out.
  • “But the others replied, ‘We don’t have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.’
  • But the prudent answered saying, [We cannot,] lest it might not suffice for us and for you. Go rather to those that sell, and buy for yourselves.
  • “But while they were gone to buy oil, the bridegroom came. Then those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was locked.
  • But as they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and the [ones that were] ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut.
  • Later, when the other five bridesmaids returned, they stood outside, calling, ‘Lord! Lord! Open the door for us!’
  • Afterwards come also the rest of the virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us;
  • “But he called back, ‘Believe me, I don’t know you!’
  • but he answering said, Verily I say unto you, I do not know you.
  • “So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.
  • Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour.

  • Parable of the Three Servants

    “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone.
  • The Parable of the Talents

    For [it is] as [if] a man going away out of a country called his own bondmen and delivered to them his substance.
  • He gave five bags of silverb to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last — dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip.
  • And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to each according to his particular ability, and immediately went away out of the country.
  • “The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more.
  • And he that had received the five talents went and trafficked with them, and made five other talents.
  • The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more.
  • In like manner also he that [had received] the two, [he also] gained two others.
  • But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master’s money.
  • But he that had received the one went and dug in the earth, and hid the money of his lord.
  • “After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money.
  • And after a long time the lord of those bondmen comes and reckons with them.
  • The servant to whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver came forward with five more and said, ‘Master, you gave me five bags of silver to invest, and I have earned five more.’
  • And he that had received the five talents came to [him] and brought five other talents, saying, [My] lord, thou deliveredst me five talents; behold, I have gained five other talents besides them.
  • “The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!c
  • His lord said to him, Well, good and faithful bondman, thou wast faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things: enter into the joy of thy lord.
  • “The servant who had received the two bags of silver came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two bags of silver to invest, and I have earned two more.’
  • And he also that had received the two talents came to [him] and said, [My] lord, thou deliveredst me two talents; behold, I have gained two other talents besides them.
  • “The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’
  • His lord said to him, Well, good and faithful bondman, thou wast faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
  • “Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate.
  • And he also that had received the one talent coming to [him] said, [My] lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hadst not sowed, and gathering from where thou hadst not scattered,
  • I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.’
  • and being afraid I went away and hid thy talent in the earth; behold, thou hast that which is thine.
  • “But the master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant and gathered crops I didn’t cultivate,
  • And his lord answering said to him, Wicked and slothful bondman, thou knewest that I reap where I had not sowed, and gather from where I had not scattered;
  • why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’
  • thou oughtest then to have put my money to the money-changers, and when I came I should have got what is mine with interest.
  • “Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver.
  • Take therefore the talent from him, and give it to him that has the ten talents:
  • To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.
  • for to every one that has shall be given, and he shall be in abundance; but from him that has not, that even which he has shall be taken from him.
  • Now throw this useless servant into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
  • And cast out the useless bondman into the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

  • The Final Judgment

    “But when the Son of Mand comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne.
  • The Sheep and the Goats

    But when the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit down upon his throne of glory,
  • All the nationse will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
  • and all the nations shall be gathered before him; and he shall separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats;
  • He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.
  • and he will set the sheep on his right hand, and the goats on [his] left.
  • “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.
  • Then shall the King say to those on his right hand, Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from [the] world's foundation:
  • For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.
  • for I hungered, and ye gave me to eat; I thirsted, and ye gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in;
  • I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
  • naked, and ye clothed me; I was ill, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came to me.
  • “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink?
  • Then shall the righteous answer him saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungering, and nourished thee; or thirsting, and gave thee to drink?
  • Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing?
  • and when saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in; or naked, and clothed thee?
  • When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
  • and when saw we thee ill, or in prison, and came to thee?
  • “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,f you were doing it to me!’
  • And the King answering shall say to them, Verily, I say to you, Inasmuch as ye have done it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it to me.
  • “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons.g
  • Then shall he say also to those on the left, Go from me, cursed, into eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
  • For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink.
  • for I hungered, and ye gave me not to eat; I thirsted, and ye gave me not to drink;
  • I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’
  • I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye did not clothe me; ill, and in prison, and ye did not visit me.
  • “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’
  • Then shall *they* also answer saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungering, or thirsting, or a stranger, or naked, or ill, or in prison, and have not ministered to thee?
  • “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’
  • Then shall he answer them saying, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as ye have not done it to one of these least, neither have ye done it to me.
  • “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”
  • And these shall go away into eternal punishment, and the righteous into life eternal.
