Darby Bible Translation

  • John the Baptist Prepares the Way

This is the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.a It began
  • The Mission of John the Baptist

    Beginning of the glad tidings of Jesus Christ, Son of God;
  • just as the prophet Isaiah had written:
“Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
and he will prepare your way.b
  • as it is written in [Isaiah] the prophet, Behold, *I* send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way.
  • He is a voice shouting in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the LORD’s coming!
    Clear the road for him!’c
  • Voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of [the] Lord, make his paths straight.
  • This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.
  • There came John baptising in the wilderness, and preaching [the] baptism of repentance for remission of sins.
  • All of Judea, including all the people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.
  • And there went out to him all the district of Judaea, and all they of Jerusalem, and were baptised by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
  • His clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey.
  • And John was clothed in camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and ate locusts and wild honey.
  • John announced: “Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am — so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals.
  • And he preached, saying, There comes he that is mightier than I after me, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to stoop down and unloose.
  • I baptize you withd water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”
  • *I* indeed have baptised you with water, but *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit.

  • The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus

One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River.
  • The Baptism of Jesus

And it came to pass in those days [that] Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptised by John at the Jordan.
  • As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on hime like a dove.
  • And straightway going up from the water, he saw the heavens parting asunder, and the Spirit, as a dove, descending upon him.
  • And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”
  • And there came a voice out of the heavens: *Thou* art my beloved Son, in thee I have found my delight.
  • The Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness,
  • The Temptation of Jesus

And immediately the Spirit drives him out into the wilderness.
  • where he was tempted by Satan for forty days. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him.
  • And he was in the wilderness forty days tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him.
  • Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee, where he preached God’s Good News.f
  • Jesus Preaches in Galilee

But after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee preaching the glad tidings of the kingdom of God,
  • “The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!”
  • and saying, The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God has drawn nigh; repent and believe in the glad tidings.

  • The First Disciples

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simong and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living.
  • Jesus Calls His First Disciples

And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew, [Simon's] brother, casting out a net in the sea, for they were fishers.
  • Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”
  • And Jesus said to them, Come after me, and I will make you become fishers of men;
  • And they left their nets at once and followed him.
  • and straightway leaving their trawl-nets they followed him.
  • A little farther up the shore Jesus saw Zebedee’s sons, James and John, in a boat repairing their nets.
  • And going on thence a little, he saw James the [son] of Zebedee, and John his brother, and these [were] in the ship repairing the trawl-nets;
  • He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men.
  • and straightway he called them; and leaving their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, they went away after him.

  • Jesus Casts Out an Evil Spirit

Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach.
  • Jesus Expels an Evil Spirit

And they go into Capernaum. And straightway on the sabbath he entered into the synagogue and taught.
  • The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority — quite unlike the teachers of religious law.
  • And they were astonished at his doctrine, for he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes.
  • Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evilh spirit cried out,
  • And there was in their synagogue a man [possessed] by an unclean spirit, and he cried out
  • “Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”
  • saying, Eh! what have we to do with thee, Jesus, Nazarene? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the holy one of God.
  • But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered.
  • And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace and come out of him.
  • At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him.
  • And the unclean spirit, having torn him, and uttered a cry with a loud voice, came out of him.
  • Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. “What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!”
  • And all were amazed, so that they questioned together among themselves, saying, What is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.
  • The news about Jesus spread quickly throughout the entire region of Galilee.
  • And his fame went out straightway into the whole region of Galilee around.

  • Jesus Heals Many People

After Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went to Simon and Andrew’s home.
  • Jesus Heals at Peter's House

And straightway going out of the synagogue, they came with James and John into the house of Simon and Andrew.
  • Now Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. They told Jesus about her right away.
  • And the mother-in-law of Simon lay in a fever. And straightway they speak to him about her.
  • So he went to her bedside, took her by the hand, and helped her sit up. Then the fever left her, and she prepared a meal for them.
  • And he went up to [her] and raised her up, having taken her by the hand, and straightway the fever left her, and she served them.
  • That evening after sunset, many sick and demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus.
  • But evening being come, when the sun had gone down, they brought to him all that were suffering, and those possessed by demons;
  • The whole town gathered at the door to watch.
  • and the whole city was gathered together at the door.
  • So Jesus healed many people who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons. But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to speak.
  • And he healed many suffering from various diseases; and he cast out many demons, and did not suffer the demons to speak because they knew him.

  • Jesus Preaches in Galilee

Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.
  • Jesus Prays and Preaches

And rising in the morning long before day, he went out and went away into a desert place, and there prayed.
  • Later Simon and the others went out to find him.
  • And Simon and those with him went after him:
  • When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.”
  • and having found him, they say to him, All seek thee.
  • But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.”
  • And he says to them, Let us go elsewhere into the neighbouring country towns, that I may preach there also, for for this purpose am I come forth.
  • So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons.
  • And he was preaching in their synagogues in the whole of Galilee, and casting out demons.

  • Jesus Heals a Man with Leprosy

A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said.
  • The Leper's Prayer

And there comes to him a leper, beseeching him, and falling on his knees to him, and saying to him, If thou wilt thou canst cleanse me.
  • Moved with compassion,i Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!”
  • But Jesus, moved with compassion, having stretched out his hand, touched him, and says to him, I will, be thou cleansed.
  • Instantly the leprosy disappeared, and the man was healed.
  • And as he spoke straightway the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.
  • Then Jesus sent him on his way with a stern warning:
  • And having sharply charged him, he straightway sent him away,
  • “Don’t tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy.j This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.”
  • and says to him, See thou say nothing to any one, but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing what Moses ordained, for a testimony to them.
  • But the man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone what had happened. As a result, large crowds soon surrounded Jesus, and he couldn’t publicly enter a town anywhere. He had to stay out in the secluded places, but people from everywhere kept coming to him.
  • But he, having gone forth, began to proclaim [it] much, and to spread the matter abroad, so that he could no longer enter openly into the city, but was without in desert places, and they came to him from every side.
