Darby Bible Translation

  • Discussion about Divorce and Marriage

Then Jesus left Capernaum and went down to the region of Judea and into the area east of the Jordan River. Once again crowds gathered around him, and as usual he was teaching them.
  • Jesus' Teaching about Divorce

And rising up thence he comes into the coasts of Judaea, and the other side of the Jordan. And again crowds come together to him, and, as he was accustomed, again he taught them.
  • Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife?”
  • And Pharisees coming to [him] asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away [his] wife? (tempting him).
  • Jesus answered them with a question: “What did Moses say in the law about divorce?”
  • But he answering said to them, What did Moses command you?
  • “Well, he permitted it,” they replied. “He said a man can give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away.”a
  • And they said, Moses allowed to write a bill of divorce, and to put away.
  • But Jesus responded, “He wrote this commandment only as a concession to your hard hearts.
  • And Jesus answering said to them, In view of your hard-heartedness he wrote this commandment for you;
  • But ‘God made them male and female’b from the beginning of creation.
  • but from [the] beginning of [the] creation God made them male and female.
  • ‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife,c
  • For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be united to his wife,
  • and the two are united into one.’d Since they are no longer two but one,
  • and the two shall be one flesh: so that they are no longer two but one flesh.
  • let no one split apart what God has joined together.”
  • What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
  • Later, when he was alone with his disciples in the house, they brought up the subject again.
  • And again in the house the disciples asked him concerning this.
  • He told them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her.
  • And he says to them, Whosoever shall put away his wife and shall marry another, commits adultery against her.
  • And if a woman divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery.”
  • And if a woman put away her husband and shall marry another, she commits adultery.

  • Jesus Blesses the Children

One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.
  • Jesus Blesses the Children

And they brought little children to him that he might touch them. But the disciples rebuked those that brought [them].
  • When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children.
  • But Jesus seeing [it], was indignant, and said to them, Suffer the little children to come to me; forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God.
  • I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”
  • Verily I say to you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall in no wise enter into it.
  • Then he took the children in his arms and placed his hands on their heads and blessed them.
  • And having taken them in his arms, having laid his hands on them, he blessed them.

  • The Rich Man

As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
  • The Rich Young Man

And as he went forth into the way, a person ran up to [him], and kneeling to him asked him, Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
  • “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good.
  • But Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? no one is good but one, [that is] God.
  • But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’e
  • Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honour thy father and mother.
  • “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”
  • And he answering said to him, Teacher, all these things have I kept from my youth.
  • Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
  • And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, One thing lackest thou: go, sell whatever thou hast and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, [taking up the cross].
  • At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
  • But he, sad at the word, went away grieved, for he had large possessions.
  • Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!”
  • And Jesus looking around says to his disciples, How difficultly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
  • This amazed them. But Jesus said again, “Dear children, it is very hardf to enter the Kingdom of God.
  • And the disciples were amazed at his words. And Jesus again answering says to them, Children, how difficult it is that those who trust in riches should enter into the kingdom of God!
  • In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”
  • It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
  • The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.
  • And they were exceedingly astonished, saying to one another, And who can be saved?
  • Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”
  • But Jesus looking on them says, With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.
  • Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up everything to follow you,” he said.
  • Peter began to say to him, Behold, *we* have left all things and have followed thee.
  • “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News,
  • Jesus answering said, Verily I say to you, There is no one who has left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, [or wife], or children, or lands, for my sake and for the sake of the gospel,
  • will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property — along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life.
  • that shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time: houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions, and in the coming age life eternal.
  • But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.g
  • But many first shall be last, and the last first.

  • Jesus Again Predicts His Death

They were now on the way up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were filled with awe, and the people following behind were overwhelmed with fear. Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus once more began to describe everything that was about to happen to him.
  • Third Prediction of Death, Resurrection

And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going on before them; and they were amazed, and were afraid as they followed. And taking the twelve again to [him], he began to tell them what was going to happen to him:
  • “Listen,” he said, “we’re going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Manh will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die and hand him over to the Romans.i
  • Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be delivered up to the chief priests and to the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him up to the nations:
  • They will mock him, spit on him, flog him with a whip, and kill him, but after three days he will rise again.”
  • and they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him; and after three days he shall rise again.

  • Jesus Teaches about Serving Others

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do us a favor.”
  • The Request of James and John

And there come to him James and John, the sons of Zebedee, saying [to him], Teacher, we would that whatsoever we may ask thee, thou wouldst do it for us.
  • “What is your request?” he asked.
  • And he said to them, What would ye that I should do for you?
  • They replied, “When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.”
  • And they said to him, Give to us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and one on thy left hand, in thy glory.
  • But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with?”
  • And Jesus said to them, Ye do not know what ye ask. Are ye able to drink the cup which *I* drink, or be baptised with the baptism that *I* am baptised with?
  • “Oh yes,” they replied, “we are able!”
Then Jesus told them, “You will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptized with my baptism of suffering.
  • And they said to him, We are able. And Jesus said to them, The cup that *I* drink ye will drink and with the baptism that *I* am baptised with ye will be baptised,
  • But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.”
  • but to sit on my right hand or on my left is not mine to give, but for those for whom it is prepared.
  • When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.
  • And the ten having heard [of it], began to be indignant about James and John.
  • So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.
  • But Jesus having called them to [him], says to them, Ye know that those who are esteemed to rule over the nations exercise lordship over them; and their great men exercise authority over them;
  • But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,
  • but it is not thus among you; but whosoever would be great among you, shall be your minister;
  • and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else.
  • and whosoever would be first of you shall be bondman of all.
  • For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
  • For also the Son of man did not come to be ministered to, but to minister, and give his life a ransom for many.

  • Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus

Then they reached Jericho, and as Jesus and his disciples left town, a large crowd followed him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus (son of Timaeus) was sitting beside the road.
  • Jesus Heals Bartimaeus

And they come to Jericho, and as he was going out from Jericho, and his disciples and a large crowd, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, the blind [man], sat by the wayside begging.
  • When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus of Nazareth was nearby, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
  • And having heard that it was Jesus the Nazaraean, he began to cry out and to say, O Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me.
  • “Be quiet!” many of the people yelled at him.
But he only shouted louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
  • And many rebuked him, that he might be silent; but he cried so much the more, Son of David, have mercy on me.
  • When Jesus heard him, he stopped and said, “Tell him to come here.”
So they called the blind man. “Cheer up,” they said. “Come on, he’s calling you!”
  • And Jesus, standing still, desired him to be called. And they call the blind [man], saying to him, Be of good courage, rise up, he calls thee.
  • Bartimaeus threw aside his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus.
  • And, throwing away his garment, he started up and came to Jesus.
  • “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked.
“My Rabbi,j” the blind man said, “I want to see!”
  • And Jesus answering says to him, What wilt thou that I shall do to thee? And the blind [man] said to him, Rabboni, that I may see.
  • And Jesus said to him, “Go, for your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road.k
  • And Jesus said to him, Go, thy faith has healed thee. And he saw immediately, and followed him in the way.
