New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • Jesus Anointed at Bethany

It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.
  • The Plot to Kill Jesus

After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.
  • “But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.”
  • But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.
  • Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating,a a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head.
  • Jesus Anointed at Bethany

And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
  • Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked.
  • And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?
  • “It could have been sold for a year’s wagesb and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly.
  • For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
  • But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me?
  • And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.
  • You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me.
  • For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
  • She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time.
  • She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
  • I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.”
  • Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

  • Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests to arrange to betray Jesus to them.
  • Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.
  • They were delighted when they heard why he had come, and they promised to give him money. So he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
  • And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

  • The Last Supper

On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?”
  • The Last Supper

And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?
  • So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him.
  • And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.
  • At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’
  • And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?
  • He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.”
  • And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.
  • So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.
  • And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
  • In the evening Jesus arrived with the Twelve.
  • And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.
  • As they were at the tablec eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me.”
  • And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.
  • Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one?”
  • And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?
  • He replied, “It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me.
  • And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.
  • For the Son of Mand must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”
  • The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
  • As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.”
  • The Lord's Supper Instituted

And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
  • And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
  • And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
  • And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenante between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many.
  • And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
  • I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”
  • Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
  • Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
  • And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

  • Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

On the way, Jesus told them, “All of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say,
    ‘God will strikef the Shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’
  • Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial

And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.
  • But after I am raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.”
  • But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.
  • Peter said to him, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will.”
  • But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.
  • Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter — this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.”
  • And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.
  • “No!” Peter declared emphatically. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the others vowed the same.
  • But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.

  • Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.”
  • Jesus Prays at Gethsemane

And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.
  • He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed.
  • And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;
  • He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
  • And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.
  • He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by.
  • And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
  • “Abba, Father,”g he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
  • And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
  • Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?
  • And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
  • Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
  • Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
  • Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before.
  • And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.
  • When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. And they didn’t know what to say.
  • And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.
  • When he returned to them the third time, he said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But no — the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
  • And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
  • Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!”
  • Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

  • Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders.
  • Jesus' Betrayal and Arrest

And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
  • The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard.”
  • And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.
  • As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. “Rabbi!” he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss.
  • And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.
  • Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him.
  • And they laid their hands on him, and took him.
  • But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear.
  • And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
  • Jesus asked them, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?
  • And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me?
  • Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.”
  • I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.
  • Then all his disciples deserted him and ran away.
  • And they all forsook him, and fled.
  • One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen shirt. When the mob tried to grab him,
  • And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:
  • he slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked.
  • And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

  • Jesus before the Council

They took Jesus to the high priest’s home where the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law had gathered.
  • Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.
  • Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and went right into the high priest’s courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
  • And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
  • Inside, the leading priests and the entire high councilh were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn’t find any.
  • And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.
  • Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other.
  • For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
  • Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony:
  • And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,
  • “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.’”
  • We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.
  • But even then they didn’t get their stories straight!
  • But neither so did their witness agree together.
  • Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?”
  • And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
  • But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
  • But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
  • Jesus said, “I Am.i And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right handj and coming on the clouds of heaven.k
  • And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
  • Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Why do we need other witnesses?
  • Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?
  • You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?”
“Guilty!” they all cried. “He deserves to die!”
  • Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.
  • Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists. “Prophesy to us,” they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away.
  • And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.

  • Peter Denies Jesus

Meanwhile, Peter was in the courtyard below. One of the servant girls who worked for the high priest came by
  • Peter Denies Jesus

And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:
  • and noticed Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked at him closely and said, “You were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth.l
  • And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.
  • But Peter denied it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, and he went out into the entryway. Just then, a rooster crowed.m
  • But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.
  • When the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others, “This man is definitely one of them!”
  • And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.
  • But Peter denied it again.
A little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said, “You must be one of them, because you are a Galilean.”
  • And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.
  • Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying — I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
  • But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.
  • And immediately the rooster crowed the second time.
Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he broke down and wept.
  • And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.
