New Living Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • Jesus’ Trial before Pilate

Very early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law — the entire high councila — met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
  • Jesus before Pilate

Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate.
  • Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
Jesus replied, “You have said it.”
  • Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “It is as you say.”
  • Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes,
  • The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly.
  • and Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?”
  • Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!”
  • But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.
  • But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed.
  • Now it was the governor’s custom each year during the Passover celebration to release one prisoner — anyone the people requested.
  • Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested.
  • One of the prisoners at that time was Barabbas, a revolutionary who had committed murder in an uprising.
  • The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection.
  • The crowd went to Pilate and asked him to release a prisoner as usual.
  • The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.
  • “Would you like me to release to you this ‘King of the Jews’?” Pilate asked.
  • Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”
  • (For he realized by now that the leading priests had arrested Jesus out of envy.)
  • For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
  • But at this point the leading priests stirred up the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas instead of Jesus.
  • But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.
  • Pilate asked them, “Then what should I do with this man you call the king of the Jews?”
  • Answering again, Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”
  • They shouted back, “Crucify him!”
  • They shouted back, “Crucify Him!”
  • “Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?”
But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”
  • But Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!”
  • So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.
  • Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

  • The Soldiers Mock Jesus

The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment.

  • Jesus Is Mocked

The soldiers took Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the whole Roman cohort.
  • They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head.
  • They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;
  • Then they saluted him and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!”
  • and they began to acclaim Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
  • And they struck him on the head with a reed stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.
  • They kept beating His head with a reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him.
  • When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.
  • After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.

  • The Crucifixion

A passerby named Simon, who was from Cyrene,b was coming in from the countryside just then, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. (Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus.)
  • They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross.
  • And they brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which means “Place of the Skull”).

  • The Crucifixion

Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
  • They offered him wine drugged with myrrh, but he refused it.
  • They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.
  • Then the soldiers nailed him to the cross. They divided his clothes and threw dicec to decide who would get each piece.
  • And they crucified Him, and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man should take.
  • It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him.
  • It was the third hour when they crucified Him.
  • A sign announced the charge against him. It read, “The King of the Jews.”
  • The inscription of the charge against Him read, “THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
  • Two revolutionariesd were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.e
  • They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left.
  • The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. “Ha! Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days.
  • Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
  • Well then, save yourself and come down from the cross!”
  • save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”
  • The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself!
  • In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself.
  • Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!” Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.
  • “Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

  • The Death of Jesus

At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.
  • When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.
  • Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”f
  • At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” which is translated, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”
  • Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.
  • When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Behold, He is calling for Elijah.”
  • One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. “Wait!” he said. “Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down!”
  • Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.”
  • Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last.
  • And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last.
  • And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
  • And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
  • When the Roman officerg who stood facing himh saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!”
  • When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
  • Some women were there, watching from a distance, including Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James the younger and of Josephi), and Salome.
  • There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome.
  • They had been followers of Jesus and had cared for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come with him to Jerusalem were also there.
  • When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

  • The Burial of Jesus

This all happened on Friday, the day of preparation,j the day before the Sabbath. As evening approached,

  • Jesus Is Buried

When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,
  • Joseph of Arimathea took a risk and went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. (Joseph was an honored member of the high council, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.)
  • Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.
  • Pilate couldn’t believe that Jesus was already dead, so he called for the Roman officer and asked if he had died yet.
  • Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead.
  • The officer confirmed that Jesus was dead, so Pilate told Joseph he could have the body.
  • And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.
  • Joseph bought a long sheet of linen cloth. Then he took Jesus’ body down from the cross, wrapped it in the cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been carved out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone in front of the entrance.
  • Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
  • Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where Jesus’ body was laid.
  • Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid.
