New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • Jesus’ Trial before Pilate

Very early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law — the entire high councila — met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
  • Jesus Faces Pilate

Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.
  • Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
Jesus replied, “You have said it.”
  • Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”
  • Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes,
  • And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.
  • and Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?”
  • Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things [a]they testify against You!”
  • But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.
  • But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.
  • Now it was the governor’s custom each year during the Passover celebration to release one prisoner — anyone the people requested.
  • Taking the Place of Barabbas

Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.
  • One of the prisoners at that time was Barabbas, a revolutionary who had committed murder in an uprising.
  • And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.
  • The crowd went to Pilate and asked him to release a prisoner as usual.
  • Then the multitude, [b]crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.
  • “Would you like me to release to you this ‘King of the Jews’?” Pilate asked.
  • But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
  • (For he realized by now that the leading priests had arrested Jesus out of envy.)
  • For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
  • But at this point the leading priests stirred up the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas instead of Jesus.
  • But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.
  • Pilate asked them, “Then what should I do with this man you call the king of the Jews?”
  • Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”
  • They shouted back, “Crucify him!”
  • So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”
  • “Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?”
But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”
  • Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?”
But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”
  • So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.
  • So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.

  • The Soldiers Mock Jesus

The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment.
  • The Soldiers Mock Jesus

Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called [c]Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.
  • They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head.
  • And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,
  • Then they saluted him and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!”
  • and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
  • And they struck him on the head with a reed stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.
  • Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.
  • When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.
  • And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

  • The Crucifixion

A passerby named Simon, who was from Cyrene,b was coming in from the countryside just then, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. (Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus.)
  • The King on a Cross

Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.
  • And they brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which means “Place of the Skull”).
  • And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
  • They offered him wine drugged with myrrh, but he refused it.
  • Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.
  • Then the soldiers nailed him to the cross. They divided his clothes and threw dicec to decide who would get each piece.
  • And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.
  • It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him.
  • Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.
  • A sign announced the charge against him. It read, “The King of the Jews.”
  • And the inscription of His [d]accusation was written above:
    THE KING OF THE JEWS.
  • Two revolutionariesd were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.e
  • With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.
