New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Man

So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes.a
  • Demons Cast into Pigs

And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
  • When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evilb spirit came out from the tombs to meet him.
  • And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
  • This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain.
  • Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
  • Whenever he was put into chains and shackles — as he often was — he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
  • Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
  • Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.
  • And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
  • When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him.
  • But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
  • With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!”
  • And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
  • For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.”
  • For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
  • Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?”
And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.”
  • And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
  • Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place.
  • And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
  • There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby.
  • Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
  • “Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.”
  • And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
  • So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.
  • And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
  • The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened.
  • And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
  • A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid.
  • And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
  • Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs.
  • And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.
  • And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone.
  • And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.
  • As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him.
  • And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
  • But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.”
  • Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
  • So the man started off to visit the Ten Townsc of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them.
  • And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

  • Jesus Heals in Response to Faith

Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore.
  • The Healing Touch of Jesus

And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.
  • Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet,
  • And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,
  • pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.”
  • And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.
  • Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him.
  • And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.
  • A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding.
  • And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
  • She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse.
  • And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
  • She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe.
  • When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
  • For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.”
  • For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
  • Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.
  • And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
  • Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?”
  • And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
  • His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’”
  • And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
  • But he kept on looking around to see who had done it.
  • And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
  • Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done.
  • But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
  • And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.”
  • And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
  • While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.”
  • While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
  • But Jesus overheardd them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.”
  • As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
  • Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn’t let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John (the brother of James).
  • And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
  • When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing.
  • And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
  • He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.”
  • And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
  • The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying.
  • And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
  • Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!”
  • And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
  • And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed.
  • And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
  • Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat.
  • And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
