New Living Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • Jesus Teaches about Inner Purity

One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus.
  • Followers of Tradition

The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem,
  • They noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating.
  • and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed.
  • (The Jews, especially the Pharisees, do not eat until they have poured water over their cupped hands,a as required by their ancient traditions.
  • (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders;
  • Similarly, they don’t eat anything from the market until they immerse their handsb in water. This is but one of many traditions they have clung to — such as their ceremonial washing of cups, pitchers, and kettles.c)
  • and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.)
  • So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, “Why don’t your disciples follow our age-old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony.”
  • The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?”
  • Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,
‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
  • And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS,
BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.
  • Their worship is a farce,
for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’d
  • ‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,
TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’
  • For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”
  • “Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”
  • Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.
  • He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.
  • For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,’e and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’f
  • “For Moses said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER’; and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH’;
  • But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’g
  • but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’
  • In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents.
  • you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;
  • And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.”
  • thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”
  • Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,” he said, “and try to understand.

  • The Heart of Man

After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:
  • It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.h
  • there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.
  • Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used.
  • When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable.
  • “Don’t you understand either?” he asked. “Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you?
  • And He said to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him,
  • Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.” (By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.)
  • because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?” (Thus He declared all foods clean.)
  • And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you.
  • And He was saying, “That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man.
  • For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,
  • “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries,
  • adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.
  • deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness.
  • All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”
  • “All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”

  • The Faith of a Gentile Woman

Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre.i He didn’t want anyone to know which house he was staying in, but he couldn’t keep it a secret.

  • The Syrophoenician Woman

Jesus got up and went away from there to the region of Tyre. And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know of it; yet He could not escape notice.
  • Right away a woman who had heard about him came and fell at his feet. Her little girl was possessed by an evilj spirit,
  • But after hearing of Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet.
  • and she begged him to cast out the demon from her daughter.
Since she was a Gentile, born in Syrian Phoenicia,
  • Now the woman was a Gentile, of the Syrophoenician race. And she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
  • Jesus told her, “First I should feed the children — my own family, the Jews.k It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”
  • And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
  • She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even the dogs under the table are allowed to eat the scraps from the children’s plates.”
  • But she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.”
  • “Good answer!” he said. “Now go home, for the demon has left your daughter.”
  • And He said to her, “Because of this answer go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”
  • And when she arrived home, she found her little girl lying quietly in bed, and the demon was gone.
  • And going back to her home, she found the child lying on the bed, the demon having left.

  • Jesus Heals a Deaf Man

Jesus left Tyre and went up to Sidon before going back to the Sea of Galilee and the region of the Ten Towns.l
  • Again He went out from the region of Tyre, and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of Decapolis.
  • A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him, and the people begged Jesus to lay his hands on the man to heal him.
  • They brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they implored Him to lay His hand on him.
  • Jesus led him away from the crowd so they could be alone. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then, spitting on his own fingers, he touched the man’s tongue.
  • Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva;
  • Looking up to heaven, he sighed and said, “Ephphatha,” which means, “Be opened!”
  • and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!”
  • Instantly the man could hear perfectly, and his tongue was freed so he could speak plainly!
  • And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly.
  • Jesus told the crowd not to tell anyone, but the more he told them not to, the more they spread the news.
  • And He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they continued to proclaim it.
  • They were completely amazed and said again and again, “Everything he does is wonderful. He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those who cannot speak.”
  • They were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
