  • A Call to Repentance

    About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple.
  • A Call to Repentance

    Now at the same time there were present some who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate mingled with [that of] their sacrifices.
  • “Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee?” Jesus asked. “Is that why they suffered?
  • And he answering said to them, Think ye that these Galileans were sinners beyond all the Galileans because they suffered such things?
  • Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God.
  • No, I say to you, but if ye repent not, ye shall all perish in the same manner.
  • And what about the eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem?
  • Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, think ye that *they* were debtors beyond all the men who dwell in Jerusalem?
  • No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too.”
  • No, I say to you, but if ye repent not, ye shall all perish in like manner.

    Then Jesus told this story: “A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed.

    And he spoke this parable: A certain [man] had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit upon it and did not find [any].
  • Finally, he said to his gardener, ‘I’ve waited three years, and there hasn’t been a single fig! Cut it down. It’s just taking up space in the garden.’
  • And he said to the vinedresser, Behold, [these] three years I come seeking fruit on this fig-tree and find none: cut it down; why does it also render the ground useless?
  • “The gardener answered, ‘Sir, give it one more chance. Leave it another year, and I’ll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer.
  • But he answering says to him, Sir, let it alone for this year also, until I shall dig about it and put dung,
  • If we get figs next year, fine. If not, then you can cut it down.’”
  • and if it shall bear fruit -- but if not, after that thou shalt cut it down.

  • Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

    One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue,
  • Jesus Heals a Woman on the Sabbath

    And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
  • he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight.
  • And lo, [there was] a woman having a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bent together and wholly unable to lift her head up.
  • When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!”
  • And Jesus, seeing her, called to [her], and said to her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
  • Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!
  • And he laid his hands upon her; and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
  • But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.”
  • But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus healed on the sabbath, answering said to the crowd, There are six days in which [people] ought to work; in these therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.
  • But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water?
  • The Lord therefore answered him and said, Hypocrites! does not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the manger and leading [it] away, water [it]?
  • This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?”
  • And this [woman], who is a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound, lo, [these] eighteen years, ought she not to be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
  • This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.
  • And as he said these things, all who were opposed to him were ashamed; and all the crowd rejoiced at all the glorious things which were being done by him.

  • Parable of the Mustard Seed

    Then Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it?
  • The Parable of the Mustard Seed

    And he said, To what is the kingdom of God like? and to what shall I liken it?
  • It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden; it grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its branches.”
  • It is like a grain of mustard [seed] which a man took and cast into his garden; and it grew and became a great tree, and the birds of heaven lodged in its branches.

    He also asked, “What else is the Kingdom of God like?
  • The Parable of the Leaven

    And again he said, To what shall I liken the kingdom of God?
  • It is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”
  • It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until the whole was leavened.

  • The Narrow Door

    Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he went, always pressing on toward Jerusalem.

    And he went through one city and village after another, teaching, and journeying to Jerusalem.
  • Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?”
    He replied,
  • And one said to him, Sir, [are] such as are to be saved few in number? But he said unto them,
  • “Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail.
  • Strive with earnestness to enter in through the narrow door, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter in and will not be able.
  • When the master of the house has locked the door, it will be too late. You will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Lord, open the door for us!’ But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’
  • From the time that the master of the house shall have risen up and shall have shut the door, and ye shall begin to stand without and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to us; and he answering shall say to you, I know you not whence ye are:
  • Then you will say, ‘But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’
  • then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten in thy presence and drunk, and thou hast taught in our streets;
  • And he will reply, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you come from. Get away from me, all you who do evil.’
  • and he shall say, I tell you, I do not know you whence ye are; depart from me, all [ye] workers of iniquity.
  • “There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, for you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you will be thrown out.
  • There shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves cast out.
  • And people will come from all over the world — from east and west, north and south — to take their places in the Kingdom of God.
  • And they shall come from east and west, and from north and south, and shall lie down at table in the kingdom of God.
  • And note this: Some who seem least important now will be the greatest then, and some who are the greatest now will be least important then.a
  • And behold, there are last who shall be first, and there are first who shall be last.

  • Jesus Grieves over Jerusalem

    At that time some Pharisees said to him, “Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!”
  • Lament over Jerusalem

    The same hour certain Pharisees came up, saying to him, Get out, and go hence, for Herod is desirous to kill thee.
  • Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose.
  • And he said to them, Go, tell that fox, Behold, I cast out demons and accomplish cures to-day and to-morrow, and the third [day] I am perfected;
  • Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn’t do for a prophet of God to be killed except in Jerusalem!
  • but I must needs walk to-day and to-morrow and the [day] following, for it must not be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.
  • “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.
  • Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the [city] that kills the prophets and stones those that are sent unto her, how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen her brood under her wings, and ye would not.
  • And now, look, your house is abandoned. And you will never see me again until you say, ‘Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’b
  • Behold, your house is left unto you; and I say unto you, that ye shall not see me until it come that ye say, Blessed [is] he that comes in the name of [the] Lord.
