New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • Jesus’ Trial before Pilate

Then the entire council took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor.
  • Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate

Then the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pilate.
  • They began to state their case: “This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king.”
  • And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow perverting [a]the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”
  • So Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
Jesus replied, “You have said it.”
  • Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”
  • Pilate turned to the leading priests and to the crowd and said, “I find nothing wrong with this man!”
  • So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no fault in this Man.”
  • Then they became insistent. “But he is causing riots by his teaching wherever he goes — all over Judea, from Galilee to Jerusalem!”
  • But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.”
  • “Oh, is he a Galilean?” Pilate asked.
  • Jesus Faces Herod

When Pilate heard [b]of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean.
  • When they said that he was, Pilate sent him to Herod Antipas, because Galilee was under Herod’s jurisdiction, and Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at the time.
  • And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
  • Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had heard about him and had been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle.
  • Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him.
  • He asked Jesus question after question, but Jesus refused to answer.
  • Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing.
  • Meanwhile, the leading priests and the teachers of religious law stood there shouting their accusations.
  • And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him.
  • Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
  • Then Herod, with his [c]men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.
  • (Herod and Pilate, who had been enemies before, became friends that day.)
  • That very day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.
  • Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people,
  • Taking the Place of Barabbas

Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,
  • and he announced his verdict. “You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent.
  • said to them, “You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him;
  • Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty.
  • no, neither did Herod, for [d]I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him.
  • So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him.”a
  • I will therefore chastise Him and release Him
