Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,a
  • Satan Tempts Jesus

Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit [a]into the wilderness,
  • where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
  • being [b]tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
  • Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
  • And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
  • But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’b
  • But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, [c]but by every word of God.’ ”
  • Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
  • [d]Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
  • “I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please.
  • And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.
  • I will give it all to you if you will worship me.”
  • Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
  • Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say,
‘You must worship the Lord your God
    and serve only him.’c
  • And Jesus answered and said to him, [e]“Get behind Me, Satan! [f]For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
  • Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off!
  • Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.
  • For the Scriptures say,
‘He will order his angels to protect and guard you.
  • For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,
    To keep you,’
  • And they will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’d
  • and,
‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
  • Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’e
  • And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not [g]tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
  • When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came.
  • Now when the devil had ended every [h]temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.

  • Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.
  • Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry

Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.
  • He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
  • And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
  • When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.
  • Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
  • The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:
  • And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
  • “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
    that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
  • “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
    Because He has anointed Me
    To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me [i]to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
    To set at liberty those who are [j]oppressed;
  • and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.f
  • To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
  • He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.
  • Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
  • Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”
  • And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
  • Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. “How can this be?” they asked. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
  • So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
  • Then he said, “You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself’ — meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’
  • He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum,[k] do also here in Your country.’ ”
  • But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
  • Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.
  • “Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land.
  • But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land;
  • Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner — a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
  • but to none of them was Elijah sent except to [l]Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
  • And many in Israel had leprosy in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.”
  • And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”
  • When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious.
  • So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with [m]wrath,
  • Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff,
  • and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff.
  • but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.
  • Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way.

  • Jesus Casts Out a Demon

Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught there in the synagogue every Sabbath day.
  • Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit

Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.
  • There, too, the people were amazed at his teaching, for he spoke with authority.
  • And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.
  • Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon — an evilg spirit — cried out, shouting,
  • Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice,
  • “Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”
  • saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are — the Holy One of God!”
  • But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further.
  • But Jesus rebuked him, saying, [n]“Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him.
  • Amazed, the people exclaimed, “What authority and power this man’s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!”
  • Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”
  • The news about Jesus spread through every village in the entire region.
  • And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

  • Jesus Heals Many People

After leaving the synagogue that day, Jesus went to Simon’s home, where he found Simon’s mother-in-law very sick with a high fever. “Please heal her,” everyone begged.
  • Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed

Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was [o]sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her.
  • Standing at her bedside, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and prepared a meal for them.
  • So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.
  • As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one.
  • Many Healed After Sabbath Sunset

When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them.
  • Many were possessed by demons; and the demons came out at his command, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But because they knew he was the Messiah, he rebuked them and refused to let them speak.
  • And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, “You are [p]the Christ, the Son of God!”
And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to [q]speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.

  • Jesus Continues to Preach

Early the next morning Jesus went out to an isolated place. The crowds searched everywhere for him, and when they finally found him, they begged him not to leave them.
  • Jesus Preaches in Galilee

    Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them;
  • But he replied, “I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God in other towns, too, because that is why I was sent.”
  • but He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.”
  • So he continued to travel around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea.h
  • And He was preaching in the synagogues of [r]Galilee.
