New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • The First Disciples

One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee,a great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God.
  • Jesus Calls His First Disciples

And it came to pass, as the crowd pressed on him to hear the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret:
  • He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets.
  • and he saw two ships standing by the lake, but the fishermen, having come down from them, were washing their nets.
  • Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon,b its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.
  • And getting into one of the ships, which was Simon's, he asked him to draw out a little from the land; and he sat down and taught the crowds out of the ship.
  • When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
  • But when he ceased speaking, he said to Simon, Draw out into the deep [water] and let down your nets for a haul.
  • “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”
  • And Simon answering said to him, Master, having laboured through the whole night we have taken nothing, but at thy word I will let down the net.
  • And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear!
  • And having done this, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes. And their net broke.
  • A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.
  • And they beckoned to their partners who were in the other ship to come and help them, and they came, and filled both the ships, so that they were sinking.
  • When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me — I’m such a sinful man.”
  • But Simon Peter, seeing it, fell at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord.
  • For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him.
  • For astonishment had laid hold on him, and on all those who were with him, at the haul of fishes which they had taken;
  • His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed.
Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!”
  • and in like manner also on James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Fear not; henceforth thou shalt be catching men.
  • And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.
  • And having run the ships on shore, leaving all they followed him.

  • Jesus Heals a Man with Leprosy

In one of the villages, Jesus met a man with an advanced case of leprosy. When the man saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground, begging to be healed. “Lord,” he said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.”
  • The Leper's Prayer

And it came to pass as he was in one of the cities, that behold, there was a man full of leprosy, and seeing Jesus, falling upon his face, he besought him saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou art able to cleanse me.
  • Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared.
  • And stretching forth his hand he touched him, saying, I will; be thou cleansed: and immediately the leprosy departed from him.
  • Then Jesus instructed him not to tell anyone what had happened. He said, “Go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy.c This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.”
  • And he enjoined him to tell no one; but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing as Moses ordained, for a testimony to them.
  • But despite Jesus’ instructions, the report of his power spread even faster, and vast crowds came to hear him preach and to be healed of their diseases.
  • But the report concerning him was spread abroad still more, and great crowds came together to hear, and to be healed from their infirmities.
  • But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.
  • And *he* withdrew himself, and was about in the desert [places] and praying.

  • Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

One day while Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of religious law were sitting nearby. (It seemed that these men showed up from every village in all Galilee and Judea, as well as from Jerusalem.) And the Lord’s healing power was strongly with Jesus.
  • Jesus Heals a Paralytic

And it came to pass on one of the days, that *he* was teaching, and there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, who were come out of every village of Galilee and Judaea and [out of] Jerusalem; and [the] Lord's power was [there] to heal them.
  • Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a sleeping mat. They tried to take him inside to Jesus,
  • And lo, men bringing upon a couch a man who was paralysed; and they sought to bring him in, and put [him] before him.
  • but they couldn’t reach him because of the crowd. So they went up to the roof and took off some tiles. Then they lowered the sick man on his mat down into the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
  • And not finding what way to bring him in, on account of the crowd, going up on the housetop they let him down through the tiles, with his little couch, into the midst before Jesus.
  • Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man, “Young man, your sins are forgiven.”
  • And seeing their faith, he said, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
  • But the Pharisees and teachers of religious law said to themselves, “Who does he think he is? That’s blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”
  • And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason [in their minds], saying, Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins but God alone?
  • Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts?
  • But Jesus, knowing their reasonings, answering said to them, Why reason ye in your hearts?
  • Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’?
  • which is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
  • So I will prove to you that the Son of Mand has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”
  • But that ye may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralysed man, I say to thee, Arise, and take up thy little couch and go to thine house.
  • And immediately, as everyone watched, the man jumped up, picked up his mat, and went home praising God.
  • And immediately standing up before them, having taken up that whereon he was laid, he departed to his house, glorifying God.
  • Everyone was gripped with great wonder and awe, and they praised God, exclaiming, “We have seen amazing things today!”
  • And astonishment seized all, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to-day.

  • Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew)

Later, as Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him.
  • Jesus Calls Levi

And after these things he went forth and saw a tax-gatherer, Levi by name, sitting at the receipt of taxes, and said to him, Follow me.
  • So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.
  • And having left all, rising up, he followed him.
  • Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them.
  • And Levi made a great entertainment for him in his house, and there was a great crowd of tax-gatherers and others who were at table with them.
  • But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with such scum?e
  • And their scribes and the Pharisees murmured at his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with tax-gatherers and sinners?
  • Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor — sick people do.
  • And Jesus answering said to them, They that are in sound health have not need of a physician, but those that are ill.
  • I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”
  • I am not come to call righteous [persons], but sinful [ones] to repentance.

  • A Discussion about Fasting

One day some people said to Jesus, “John the Baptist’s disciples fast and pray regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking?”
  • Jesus Questioned about Fasting

And they said to him, Why do the disciples of John fast often and make supplications, in like manner those also of the Pharisees, but thine eat and drink?
  • Jesus responded, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not.
  • And he said to them, Can ye make the sons of the bridechamber fast when the bridegroom is with them?
  • But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.”
  • But days will come when also the bridegroom will have been taken away from them; then shall they fast in those days.
  • Then Jesus gave them this illustration: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t even match the old garment.
  • The Patches and Wineskins

And he spoke also a parable to them: No one puts a piece of a new garment upon an old garment, otherwise he will both rend the new, and the piece which is from the new will not suit with the old.
  • “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins.
  • And no one puts new wine into old skins, otherwise the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be poured out, and the skins will be destroyed;
  • New wine must be stored in new wineskins.
  • but new wine is to be put into new skins, and both are preserved.
  • But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old is just fine,’ they say.”
  • And no one having drunk old wine [straightway] wishes for new, for he says, The old is better.
