The Faith of a Roman Officer
When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he returned to Capernaum.

А коли Він скінчи́в усі слова́ Свої до наро́ду, що слухав Його, то ввійшов у Капернау́м.
У одного ж сотника тяжко раб занедужав, що був дорогий йому́, і вмирати вже мав.
When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave.
А коли про Ісуса почув, то послав він до Нього юдейських старши́х, і благав Його, щоб прийшов, і вздоро́вив раба́ його.
So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said,
Вони ж прибули́ до Ісуса, та й ревно благали Його й говорили: „Він достойний, щоб Ти це зробив йому.
“for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.”
Бо він любить наро́д наш, та й для нас синагогу поставив“.
So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor.
І пішов Ісус із ними. І коли недале́ко від дому вже був, сотник друзів послав, щоб сказати Йому: „Не турбу́йся, о Господи, бо я недостойний, щоб зайшов Ти під стрі́ху мою.
I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.
Тому́ то й себе не вважав я за гідного, щоб до Тебе прийти. Та промов тільки слово, — і раб мій одужає.
I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”
Бо й я — люди́на підвладна, і вояків під собою я маю; і одному кажу: піди, — то йде він, а тому: прийди, — і прихо́дить, а своєму рабо́ві: зроби теє — і зробить“.
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!”
Почувши ж таке, Ісус здивувався йому, і, звернувшись до на́товпу, що йшов слідо́м за Ним, промовив: „Кажу вам: навіть серед Ізраїля Я не знайшов був такої великої віри!“
And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed.
А коли посланці́ повернулись додому, то знайшли, що одужав той раб!
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son
Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him.
І сталось, — насту́пного дня Він відправивсь у місто, що зветься Наї́н, а з Ним ішли учні Його та багато наро́ду.
A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her.
І ось, як до брами місько́ї набли́зився Він, вино́сили вмерлого, одинака́ в своєї матері, що вдовою була. І з нею був на́товп великий із міста.
When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.
Як Господь же побачив її, то змилосе́рдивсь над нею, і до неї промовив: „Не плач!“
Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.”
І Він підійшов, і доторкнувся до мар, носії ж зупинились. Тоді Він сказав: „Юначе, кажу́ тобі: встань!“
Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
І мертвий устав, і почав говорити. І його Він віддав його матері.
Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.”
А всіх о́страх пройняв, і Бога хвалили вони й говорили: „Великий Пророк з'явився між нами, і згля́нувся Бог над наро́дом Своїм!“
And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside.
І розійшлася ця чутка про Нього по ці́лій Юдеї, і по всій тій країні.
Jesus and John the Baptist
The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples,
Про все ж те сповістили Івана учні його. І покликав Іван двох із у́чнів своїх,
і послав їх до Господа з за́питом: „Чи Ти Той, Хто має прийти, чи чекати нам Іншого?“
John’s two disciples found Jesus and said to him, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?’”
А мужі, прийшовши до Нього, сказали: „Іван Христитель послав нас до Тебе, питаючи: Чи Ти Той, Хто має прийти, чи чекати нам Іншого?“
At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind.
А саме тоді багатьох уздоро́вив був Він від неду́гів і мук, і від ду́хів злих, і сліпим багатьо́м вернув зір.
Then he told John’s disciples, “Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard — the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”
І промовив Ісус їм у відповідь: „Ідіть, і перекажіть Іванові, що́ ви бачили й чули: „Сліпі прозрівають“, криві ходять, очищуються слабі на проказу, і чують глухі, воскресають померлі, „убогим звіщається Добра Нови́на“.
І блаженний, хто через Мене споку́си не матиме!“
After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?
А коли відійшли посланці́ Іванові, Він почав говорити про Івана наро́дові: „На що́ ви дивитись ходили в пустиню? Чи на очере́т, що вітер гойда́є його?
Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces.
Та на що́ ви дивитись ходили? Може на чоловіка, у м'які шати одя́гненого? Аджеж ті, хто одягається славно, і розкішно живе, — по палатах царськи́х.
Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.
На що́ ж ви ходили дивитись? На пророка? Так, кажу вам, — навіть більше, аніж на пророка.
Це той, що про нього написано: „Ось перед обличчя Твоє посилаю Свого посланця́, який перед Тобою дорогу Твою приготу́є!“
I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!”
Кажу вам: Між наро́дженими від жінок нема більшого понад Івана. Та найменший у Божому Царстві — той більший за нього“.
І всі люди, що слухали, і ми́тники визнали Божу волю за слушну, — і охристились Івановим хрищенням.
But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God’s plan for them, for they had refused John’s baptism.
А фарисеї й зако́нники відкинули Божу волю про себе, — і не христились від нього.
“To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them?
І промовив Госпо́дь: „До кого ж уподо́блю людей цього роду? І до ко́го подібні вони?
They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends,
‘We played wedding songs,
and you didn’t dance,
so we played funeral songs,
and you didn’t weep.’
‘We played wedding songs,
and you didn’t dance,
so we played funeral songs,
and you didn’t weep.’
Подібні вони до дітей, що на ринку сидять й один о́дного кличуть та кажуть: „Ми вам грали були, а ви не танцювали, ми співали вам жа́лібно, та не плакали ви“.
For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’
Бо прийшов Іван Христитель, що хліба не їсть і вина не п'є, а ви кажете: „Має він де́мона“.
Прийшов же Син Лю́дський, що їсть і п'є, а ви кажете: „Чоловік Цей ласу́н і п'яни́ця, Він при́ятель ми́тників і грішників“.
І ви́правдалася мудрість усіма́ своїми діла́ми“.
А один із фарисеїв просив Його, щоб спожив Він із ним. І, прийшовши до дому того фарисея, Він сів при столі.
When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.
І ось жінка одна, що була в місті, грішниця, як дізналась, що, Він у фарисеєвім домі засів при столі, аляба́строву пляшечку мира принесла,
Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.
і, припавши до ніг Його зза́ду, плачучи́, почала обливати слізьми́ Йому ноги, і воло́ссям своїм витирала, но́ги Йому цілувала та миром масти́ла.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”
Побачивши це, фарисей, що покликав Його, міркував собі, ка́жучи: „Коли б був Він пророк, Він би знав, хто́ ото й яка жінка до Нього торкається, — бож то грішниця!“
Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.”
“Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.
“Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.
І озвався Ісус та й говорить до нього: „Маю, Си́моне, дещо сказати тобі“. А той відказав: „Кажи, Учителю“.
І промовив Ісус: „Були два боржники́ в одно́го віри́теля; один був винен п'ятсо́т динаріїв, а другий — п'ятдеся́т.
But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?”
Як вони ж не могли заплатити, простив він обо́м. Скажи ж, котри́й із них більше полюбить його?“
Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.”
“That’s right,” Jesus said.
“That’s right,” Jesus said.
Відповів Си́мон, говорячи: „Ду́маю, — той, кому більше простив“. І сказав Він йому: „Розсудив ти правдиво“.
Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
І, оберну́вшись до жінки, Він промовив до Си́мона: „Чи ти бачиш цю жінку? Я прибув у твій дім, — ти на ноги Мої не подав і води, а вона окропи́ла слізьми́ Мої ноги й обтерла воло́ссям своїм.
You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet.
Поцілунку не дав ти Мені, — а вона, відко́ли ввійшов Я, Мої но́ги цілує невпинно.
You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.
Голови ти Моєї оливою не намастив, — а вона миром но́ги мої намастила.
“I tell you, her sins — and they are many — have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.”
Ось тому говорю́ Я тобі: „Числе́нні гріхи її про́щені, бо багато вона полюбила. Кому́ ж мало прощається, такий мало любить“.
Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”
А до неї промовив: „Прощаються тобі гріхи!“
The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”
А ті, що сиділи з Ним при столі, почали гомоніти про себе: „Хто́ ж це Таки́й, що прощає й гріхи?“
