The Faith of a Roman Officer
When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he returned to Capernaum.

Раб одного сотника, яким той дорожив, тяжко занедужав і вмирав.
When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave.
Коли почув про Ісуса, послав до Нього юдейських старших, благаючи, щоби прийшов і врятував його раба.
So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said,
Прийшовши до Ісуса, вони благали Його ревно, кажучи: Він гідний того, щоб Ти йому це зробив,
“for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.”
бо любить наш народ і синагогу нам збудував.
So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor.
Ісус пішов з ними. Коли вже був недалеко від дому, сотник послав [до Нього] друзів, щоб сказали йому: Господи, не трудися, бо я не достойний, щоб Ти зайшов під мій дах;
I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.
тому я не вважав себе гідним прийти до Тебе. Але скажи слово — і видужає мій слуга.
I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”
Адже і я людина підвладна, і воїнів маю підлеглих; кажу одному: Іди, — і він іде, а іншому: Прийди, — і він приходить, а рабові своєму: Зроби це, — і він робить.
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!”
Почувши це, Ісус здивувався і, обернувшись до натовпу, який ішов за Ним, промовив: Кажу вам: навіть в Ізраїлі Я не знайшов такої віри!
And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed.
Коли посланці повернулися додому, знайшли [хворого] раба здоровим.
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son
Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him.
Після цього Він пішов до міста, яке зветься Наїн. І сталося, що з Ним ішли [численні] Його учні та багато людей.
A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her.
Коли Він наблизився до міської брами, виносили мертвого — єдиного сина в матері, яка була вдовою; було з нею багато людей з міста.
When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.
Побачивши її, Господь змилосердився над нею і сказав їй: Не плач!
Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.”
Підійшовши, Він доторкнувся до мар; ті, які несли, стали. І Він сказав: Юначе, кажу тобі: встань!
Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
Мертвий підвівся і почав говорити. Тож Ісус віддав його матері.
Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.”
А всіх охопив страх. І вони прославляли Бога, кажучи: Великий пророк з’явився між нами, і Бог відвідав Свій народ!
And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside.
І розійшлася ця мова про Нього по всій Юдеї та по всій країні.
Jesus and John the Baptist
The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples,
І сповістили Івана його учні про все це. Тож покликавши двох зі своїх учнів, Іван
послав їх до Господа запитати: Чи Ти Той, Хто має прийти, чи нам чекати на іншого?
John’s two disciples found Jesus and said to him, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?’”
Прийшовши до Нього, мужі сказали: Іван Хреститель послав нас до Тебе запитати, чи Ти Той, Хто має прийти, чи нам чекати на іншого?
At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind.
Саме тоді Він оздоровив багатьох від недуг та мук і від злих духів, і багатьом сліпим повернув зір.
Then he told John’s disciples, “Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard — the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”
Тож Він сказав їм у відповідь: Ідіть і сповістіть Іванові, що ви побачили й почули: сліпі прозрівають, криві ходять, прокажені очищуються, глухі чують, мертві воскресають, бідним звіщається Євангеліє;
блаженний той, хто через Мене не спокуситься!
After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?
А коли Іванові посланці відійшли, Він почав говорити про Івана до натовпу: На що ви ходили дивитися в пустелю? На колиханий вітром очерет?
Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces.
То на що ж ви ходили дивитися? Може, на людину, вдягнену в м’які шати? Але ті, котрі одягаються пишно та розкішно, живуть у царських палацах.
Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.
На що ж ви ходили дивитися? На пророка? Так, кажу вам, — навіть більше, ніж на пророка!
Він той, про кого написано: Ось Я посилаю ангела Мого перед обличчя Твоє, який приготує Твою дорогу перед Тобою!
I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!”
Кажу вам, що з-поміж народжених від жінок немає більшого від Івана, але найменший у Царстві Божому більший за нього!
Весь народ і митники, почувши, визнали правоту Бога й охрестилися Івановим хрещенням,
But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God’s plan for them, for they had refused John’s baptism.
а фарисеї та законники відкинули задум Божий для них — не були хрещені ним.
“To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them?
Тож з ким порівняю людей цього роду? До кого вони подібні?
They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends,
‘We played wedding songs,
and you didn’t dance,
so we played funeral songs,
and you didn’t weep.’
‘We played wedding songs,
and you didn’t dance,
so we played funeral songs,
and you didn’t weep.’
Подібні вони до дітей, які сидять на майданах і гукають одне одному, кажучи: Ми вам грали, а ви не танцювали; ми голосили, а ви не плакали!
For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’
Прийшов Іван Хреститель, який не їсть хліба і не п’є вина, а ви кажете: Він біса має.
Прийшов Син Людський, Який їсть і п’є, а ви кажете: Цей Чоловік ненажера і п’яниця, приятель митників і грішників.
Тож виправдалася мудрість усіма своїми дітьми.
Один із фарисеїв просив Його, щоб Він поїв з ним. Увійшовши до дому фарисея, Він сів до столу.
When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.
А жінка, яка була в місті, грішниця, довідавшись, що Він сидить при столі в домі фарисея, принесла в алебастровій посудині миро;
Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.
вона ззаду припала до Його ніг і, плачучи, почала обмивати Його ноги слізьми та обтирати волоссям своєї голови, і цілувала Його ноги та мастила миром.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”
Побачивши це, фарисей, котрий запросив Його, міркував собі й казав: Коли б Він був пророком, то знав би, хто і яка ця жінка, яка доторкається до Нього, — що вона грішниця!
Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.”
“Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.
“Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.
Ісус у відповідь промовив до нього: Симоне, маю тобі щось сказати. А той промовив: Кажи, Учителю!
Були в одного лихваря два боржники: один був винен п’ятсот динаріїв [1] , а другий — п’ятдесят.
But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?”
Оскільки вони не могли віддати, то обом подарував. Отже, котрий з них більше любитиме його?
Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.”
“That’s right,” Jesus said.
“That’s right,” Jesus said.
У відповідь Симон сказав: Думаю, що той, якому більше подарував. І Він сказав йому: Правильно ти розсудив.
Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
Обернувшись до жінки, Він сказав Симонові: Чи ти бачиш цю жінку? Я ввійшов до твого дому, а ти води на Мої ноги не дав, а вона слізьми полила Мені ноги й волоссям своїм обтерла.
You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet.
Поцілунку Мені ти не дав, а вона, відколи ввійшов Я, не перестає цілувати Мої ноги.
You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.
Голови Моєї ти олією не намастив, а вона миром намастила Мої ноги.
“I tell you, her sins — and they are many — have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.”
Через те кажу тобі: Прощаються її численні гріхи, бо дуже вона полюбила, а кому мало прощається, той мало любить!
Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”
А до неї Він промовив: Прощаються твої гріхи!
The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”
Ті, хто сидів при столі, почали міркувати собі: Хто ж Він, що й гріхи прощає?
