New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • Prologue: Christ, the Eternal Word

In the beginning the Word already existed.
    The Word was with God,
    and the Word was God.
  • The Eternal Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
  • He existed in the beginning with God.
  • He was in the beginning with God.
  • God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
  • All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
  • The Word gave life to everything that was created,a
and his life brought light to everyone.
  • In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
  • The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.b
  • And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [a]comprehend it.
  • God sent a man, John the Baptist,c
  • John’s Witness: The True Light

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
  • to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony.
  • This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.
  • John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light.
  • He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
  • The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
  • That[b] was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
  • He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him.
  • He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
  • He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.
  • He came to His [c]own, and His [d]own did not receive Him.
  • But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.
  • But as many as received Him, to them He gave the [e]right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
  • They are reborn — not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
  • who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
  • So the Word became humand and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness.e And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
  • The Word Becomes Flesh

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
  • John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”
  • John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me [f]is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”
  • From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.f
  • [g]And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.
  • For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.
  • For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
  • No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God,g is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.
  • No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten [h]Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

  • The Testimony of John the Baptist

This was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistantsh from Jerusalem to ask John, “Who are you?”
  • A Voice in the Wilderness

Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
  • He came right out and said, “I am not the Messiah.”
  • He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
  • “Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?”
    “No,” he replied.
“Are you the Prophet we are expecting?”i
    “No.”
  • And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?”
    He said, “I am not.”
    “Are you the Prophet?”
    And he answered, “No.”
  • “Then who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?”
  • Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
  • John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah:
“I am a voice shouting in the wilderness,
‘Clear the way for the LORD’s coming!’”j
  • He said: “I am
‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
“Make straight the way of the Lord,” ’
    as the prophet Isaiah said.”
  • Then the Pharisees who had been sent
  • Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.
  • asked him, “If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?”
  • And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
  • John told them, “I baptize withk water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize.
  • John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.
  • Though his ministry follows mine, I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.”
  • It is He who, coming after me, [i]is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”
  • This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing.
  • These things were done in [j]Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

  • Jesus, the Lamb of God

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
  • The Lamb of God

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
  • He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’
  • This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who [k]is preferred before me, for He was before me.’
  • I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.”
  • I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
  • Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him.
  • And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.
  • I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
  • I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
  • I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.l
  • And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

  • The First Disciples

The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples.
  • The First Disciples

Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.
  • As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!”
  • And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”
  • When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.
  • The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
  • Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them.
They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
  • Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”
They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”
  • “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.
  • He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).
  • Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus.
  • One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
  • Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”m).
  • He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the [l]Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ).
  • Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John — but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”n).
  • And he brought him to Jesus.
Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of [m]Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, [n]A Stone).
  • The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.”
  • Philip and Nathanael

The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.”
  • Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown.
  • Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
  • Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moseso and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”
  • Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote — Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
  • “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
“Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.
  • And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
  • As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel — a man of complete integrity.”
  • Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”
  • “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”
  • Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
  • Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God — the King of Israel!”
  • Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
  • Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”
  • Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”
  • Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.p
  • And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter[o] you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
