New Living Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • The Wedding at Cana

The next daya there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,
  • Miracle at Cana

    On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there;
  • and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration.
  • and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
  • The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.”
  • When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
  • “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”
  • And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.”
  • But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
  • His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
  • Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons.b
  • Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.
  • Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled,
  • Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim.
  • he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions.
  • And He said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it to him.
  • When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over.
  • When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom,
  • “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”
  • and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.”
  • This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
  • This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
  • After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples.
  • After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.

  • Jesus Clears the Temple

It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem.

  • First Passover — Cleansing the Temple

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
  • In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money.
  • And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.
  • Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables.
  • And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables;
  • Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, “Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!”
  • and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things away; stop making My Father’s house a place of business.”
  • Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.”c
  • His disciples remembered that it was written, “ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME.”
  • But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.”
  • The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?”
  • “All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
  • Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
  • “What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?”
  • The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
  • But when Jesus said “this temple,” he meant his own body.
  • But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
  • After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.
  • So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

  • Jesus and Nicodemus

Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him.
  • Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing.
  • But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people.
  • But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men,
  • No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart.
  • and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.
