New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • A Woman Caught in Adultery

Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives,
  • Jesus Delivers the Adulterous Woman

But Jesus went to the mount of Olives.
  • but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them.
  • And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat down and taught them.
  • As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.
  • And the scribes and the Pharisees bring [to him] a woman taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,
  • “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
  • they say to him, Teacher, this woman has been taken in the very act, committing adultery.
  • The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”
  • Now in the law Moses has commanded us to stone such; thou therefore, what sayest thou?
  • They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.
  • But this they said proving him, that they might have [something] to accuse him [of]. But Jesus, having stooped down, wrote with his finger on the ground.
  • They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!”
  • But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up and said to them, Let him that is without sin among you first cast the stone at her.
  • Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
  • And again stooping down he wrote on the ground.
  • When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman.
  • But they, having heard [that], went out one by one beginning from the elder ones until the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing there.
  • Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”
  • And Jesus, lifting himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Has no one condemned thee?
  • “No, Lord,” she said.
And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”
    ----------
  • And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

  • Jesus, the Light of the World

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
  • Jesus the Light of the World

Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
  • The Pharisees replied, “You are making those claims about yourself! Such testimony is not valid.”
  • The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou bearest witness concerning thyself; thy witness is not true.
  • Jesus told them, “These claims are valid even though I make them about myself. For I know where I came from and where I am going, but you don’t know this about me.
  • Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is true, because I know whence I came and whither I go: but ye know not whence I come and whither I go.
  • You judge me by human standards, but I do not judge anyone.
  • Ye judge according to the flesh, I judge no one.
  • And if I did, my judgment would be correct in every respect because I am not alone. The Fathera who sent me is with me.
  • And if also I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who has sent me.
  • Your own law says that if two people agree about something, their witness is accepted as fact.b
  • And in your law too it is written that the testimony of two men is true:
  • I am one witness, and my Father who sent me is the other.”
  • I am [one] who bear witness concerning myself, and the Father who has sent me bears witness concerning me.
  • “Where is your father?” they asked.
Jesus answered, “Since you don’t know who I am, you don’t know who my Father is. If you knew me, you would also know my Father.”
  • They said to him therefore, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me nor my Father. If ye had known me, ye would have known also my Father.
  • Jesus made these statements while he was teaching in the section of the Temple known as the Treasury. But he was not arrested, because his timec had not yet come.
  • These words spoke he in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one took him, for his hour was not yet come.

  • The Unbelieving People Warned

Later Jesus said to them again, “I am going away. You will search for me but will die in your sin. You cannot come where I am going.”
  • He said therefore again to them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin; where I go ye cannot come.
  • The peopled asked, “Is he planning to commit suicide? What does he mean, ‘You cannot come where I am going’?”
  • The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he says, Where I go ye cannot come?
  • Jesus continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You belong to this world; I do not.
  • And he said to them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above. Ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
  • That is why I said that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I Am who I claim to be,e you will die in your sins.”
  • I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.
  • “Who are you?” they demanded.
Jesus replied, “The one I have always claimed to be.f
  • They said therefore to him, Who art thou? [And] Jesus said to them, Altogether that which I also say to you.
  • I have much to say about you and much to condemn, but I won’t. For I say only what I have heard from the one who sent me, and he is completely truthful.”
  • I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he that has sent me is true, and I, what I have heard from him, these things I say to the world.
  • But they still didn’t understand that he was talking about his Father.
  • They knew not that he spoke to them of the Father.
  • So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand that I Am he.g I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me.
  • Jesus therefore said to them, When ye shall have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself, but as the Father has taught me I speak these things.
  • And the one who sent me is with me — he has not deserted me. For I always do what pleases him.”
  • And he that has sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I do always the things that are pleasing to him.
  • Then many who heard him say these things believed in him.
  • As he spoke these things many believed on him.

  • Jesus and Abraham

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.
  • The Truth will Set You Free

    Jesus therefore said to the Jews who believed him, If ye abide in my word, ye are truly my disciples;
  • And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
  • and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.
  • “But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?”
  • They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never been under bondage to any one; how sayest thou, Ye shall become free?
  • Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.
  • Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one that practises sin is the bondman of sin.
  • A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever.
  • Now the bondman abides not in the house for ever: the son abides for ever.
  • So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.
  • If therefore the Son shall set you free, ye shall be really free.
  • Yes, I realize that you are descendants of Abraham. And yet some of you are trying to kill me because there’s no room in your hearts for my message.
  • I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word has no entrance in you.
  • I am telling you what I saw when I was with my Father. But you are following the advice of your father.”
  • I speak what I have seen with my Father, and ye then do what ye have seen with your father.
  • “Our father is Abraham!” they declared.
“No,” Jesus replied, “for if you were really the children of Abraham, you would follow his example.h
  • They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus says to them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham;
  • Instead, you are trying to kill me because I told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.
  • but now ye seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God: this did not Abraham.
  • No, you are imitating your real father.”
They replied, “We aren’t illegitimate children! God himself is our true Father.”
  • Ye do the works of your father. They said [therefore] to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one father, God.
  • Jesus told them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me.
  • The Children of the Devil

Jesus said to them, If God were your father ye would have loved me, for I came forth from God and am come [from him]; for neither am I come of myself, but *he* has sent me.
  • Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It’s because you can’t even hear me!
  • Why do ye not know my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word.
  • For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.
  • Ye are of the devil, as [your] father, and ye desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own; for he is a liar and its father:
  • So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me!
  • and because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me.
  • Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me?
  • Which of you convinces me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me?
  • Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God.”
  • He that is of God hears the words of God: therefore ye hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.
  • The people retorted, “You Samaritan devil! Didn’t we say all along that you were possessed by a demon?”
  • Before Abraham Was, I Am

The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon?
  • “No,” Jesus said, “I have no demon in me. For I honor my Father — and you dishonor me.
  • Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me.
  • And though I have no wish to glorify myself, God is going to glorify me. He is the true judge.
  • But I do not seek my own glory: there is he that seeks and judges.
  • I tell you the truth, anyone who obeys my teaching will never die!”
  • Verily, verily, I say unto you, If any one shall keep my word, he shall never see death.
  • The people said, “Now we know you are possessed by a demon. Even Abraham and the prophets died, but you say, ‘Anyone who obeys my teaching will never die!’
  • The Jews therefore said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham has died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste death.
  • Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
  • Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who has died? and the prophets have died: whom makest thou thyself?
  • Jesus answered, “If I want glory for myself, it doesn’t count. But it is my Father who will glorify me. You say, ‘He is our God,’i
  • Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifies me, [of] whom ye say, He is our God.
  • but you don’t even know him. I know him. If I said otherwise, I would be as great a liar as you! But I do know him and obey him.
  • And ye know him not; but I know him; and if I said, I know him not, I should be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word.
  • Your father Abraham rejoiced as he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad.”
  • Your father Abraham exulted in that he should see my day, and he saw and rejoiced.
  • The people said, “You aren’t even fifty years old. How can you say you have seen Abraham?j
  • The Jews therefore said to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham?
  • Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I Am!k
  • Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
  • At that point they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus was hidden from them and left the Temple.
  • They took up therefore stones that they might cast [them] at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, [going through the midst of them, and thus passed on.]
